Chapter 3136: The Reversed Tides
Rui closed his eyes.
“I’m sorry.”
His tone was one of grief.
Copious tears spilled from her eyes.
Rui struggled.
He struggled to rekindle the affection he had for her.
He replayed all the memories he had shared with her.
Even now, he was in love with the woman within those memories.
And yet, when he gazed at who she had become.
When he gazed into the depths of her changed eyes.
It was almost as if he was looking at somebody else entirely.
Somebody he didn’t know.
The very moment that realization settled in his soul, it crushed the love he had for the entity standing in front of him.
It was beyond his ability to alter.
This was the consequence of the Enlightenment of Self.
He knew who he was.
He knew understood the causality of his soul.
Had he still been a Martial Master, he might have been able to cope with the changes for years to come.
He might have been able to cope with who she has become and almost force himself to love her.
And yet, due to the fact that he was a Martial Sage, he couldn’t avoid the truth of how he felt about her.
He loved the Amare part of her.
He only admired and respected the Esil part of her.
And yet, he couldn’t let go of her.
Even though he grieved for the death of the Amare that he had loved.
Even though he couldn’t love Esil.
He couldn’t let go.
He couldn’t let go out of guilt.
He could have let her rest in peace that fateful day eleven years ago.
He could have let her sleep forever.
But instead, he violated one of the most fundamental laws of nature and restored her to life.
And as a consequence, she suffered for eons.
She changed because of it.
She changed to return to him.
And now he was going to break her heart after everything she went through?
He couldn’t bring himself to do that.
“Let go of me.”
His eyes widened as Amare’s shaky voice uttered something that he never could have expected her to.
“What…?” his voice was reduced to a stunned whisper.
“I said, let go of me.” Her voice was stronger this time.
Her eyes were red and puffy.
Streaks of tears trickled down her cheek.
“I want your love,” she spoke with a shaky voice. “Not your pity or your guilt.”
Rui’s expression was one of sorrow.
His bloodied arms fell off her body.
She inhaled deeply as she gazed at him with longing, agony, and love.
“Farewell, Rui Quarrier.”
She turned her back on him, walking away from him towards the world bridge portal.
“Amare…” Rui tried reaching out to her shoulder, but he couldn’t move his arms even in the slightest anymore.
He watched her disappear into the portal.
THUD
He fell to his knees, his gaze returning to the corpse of the Supreme Commander.
He felt a little empty.
Powerless.
Despite all the power that he had gained, there were things that he simply couldn’t change.
He gathered the final bit of Gu from the corpse, collecting all of his scattered primordial seed from the ravaged battlefield, as well as taking some more samples of invintium before departing from the battlefield and passing through the World Bridge portal.
Inside, a clean-up team had already been prepared to collect all spoils of war and anything that could be used for research, while a medical team immediately tended to him, feeding him an extremely potent healing potion and powerful nutrient potions while they adjusted and set his bones in the right place.
Within minutes, his body rapidly returned to a healed, if exhausted, state.
“Thank you.”
“We have prepared a place for you to rest, Your Highness.”
By the time he reached the extravagant resting stronghold guarded by Martial Masters and rested, his eyes were heavy.
He fell asleep almost immediately.
The Panama Continent, on the other hand, celebrated the successful cleansing of the continent from evolutionary presence.
The Beast Excursion had been at it for a few hours, sweeping across every nook and cranny of the continent. They avoided human presence, much to the shock of many people, and even protected human civilization when they were dealing with foreign entities and a foreign influence.
In a matter of hours, almost all settlements had been overrun by the beasts and monsters.
The weaker and smallest of settlements didn’t stand a chance and were simply wiped out.
Those settlements that came in peace were actively protected by human civilization from the Beast Excursion, who seemed to have more nuance under the influence of Rui’s command than the Eldritch Chimera. It became possible for human civilization to authorize certain external parties a special place on the continent, like they had with the dark elves.
The other major settlement that required great Martial Power to overcome were the giants, who had been hunted alive by an enormous Martial Sage force led by both Bodhisattva Maitreyi and Sage Jinryong Namgung.
It hadn’t been easy hunting down them down, but with two Transcendent Candidates leading the operation, not even the giants could last very long against the sheer amount of power that was dumped on them.
While the giants were exterminated, the dwarves were captured.
They were found helpless in their own energy shielded base, without anything to protect them when the energy shield ran out, and each and every dwarf was turned into a prisoner of war by Martial Sages who arrived moments after the shield collapsed, when the dwarves were on the very verge of being eaten alive.
And thus, every last hostile true world entity had been kicked out of the continent by the end of the day. The Panama Continent, which had been on the very verge of complete collapse, rebounded as the Beast Excursion and the Great Nam Ocean joined the war, overwhelming their enemies in one fell swoop.
All thanks to the return of the Dawnbringer.
