Chapter 1151: 1151 Friends And Enemies
Wolfe watched over the foreign world as the spells spread across the surface. The chaos, rioting and violence were beginning to fade already, but the response was already growing.
All over the world, high altitude explosions were set off, dispersing some sort of chemical into the upper atmosphere, where it would slowly fall to the surface during the coming weeks and months.
Wolfe could sense that there was something similar to magic energy in the explosions, but not quite the same.
The Witches, on the other hand, immediately recognized the spreading effects of a curse.
“They cast it again, can you tell where it’s coming from? I can’t sense the caster.” Priya declared, focusing her energy to find the enemy.
“It’s synthetic. They’re not using a caster, they’re using high altitude bombs to spray everyone with whatever is causing the curse. What I can’t find is where they’re getting the energy.” Wolfe replied.
The Ciel blanched pale white instead of their usual silver.
“Us, they’re getting it from us. Our blood reacts with certain chemicals to release large amounts of energy. We call it blood magic.” One of them explained.
Wolfe frowned. “I don’t sense any more of you on the planet, not even young ones, or embryos. If they’re still using it, they must be working off stockpiles.”
The Ciel nodded. “It doesn’t take much. One body is enough for hundreds of weapons, and they harvest hundreds of thousands of us after they attacked. They’ve been desperate to find the rest of us because you can’t freeze the blood, or it loses its energy, and if you leave it too long it spoils and deteriorates.
Within the next year, all of the stored blood they have should be gone, as long as they can’t clone one of us.”
“Is cloning a technology they have?” Priya asked.
“No, but it’s in our nature, so they might find a way to keep the blood cells replicating. I don’t know much about such evil technologies.”
That was fairly understandable. It wasn’t like they could go in and work at the research labs when the people running them were slaughtering a species for experiments and power.
If Wolfe had to guess, someone had convinced them that the Ciel were an existential threat to the humans, and that had led to massive outrage and demands that something be done.
That something was naturally to find their weakness and eliminate them, but while trying to keep the best that the Ciel had to offer for the ones left behind.
Those bombs were a menace, and they were stopping the progress of the cleansing and Kind Intentions spells that Wolfe had just placed, but not for long.
As long as people were indoors, they would get a much smaller dosage, while those caught in the rain would get a much larger one.
Soon they would realize that it was the water that was making everyone crazy, and that would naturally lead to questions that the government wasn’t ready to answer.
With all the Ciel gone, they had lost their scapegoat.
They might be able to play it off as “The effect is weakening because they are gone”, but that wouldn’t convince everyone, especially the scientists.
Wolfe altered the spells to run permanently, so that even if they tried in the future, they would find that the effects faded within weeks.
If he had to guess, their next move would likely be some sort of mass treatment program to claim victory for the humans. Unless, of course, they actually wanted the violence to continue.
There was profit to be made in chaos, and for those with the power, it was an excellent way to build even more wealth before things calmed down, and they could return to a more peaceful status quo.
The Cleansing spell was dissipating the effect of the bombs more quickly than Wolfe had expected, as it didn’t appear to form a curse until it touched someone, and cleansing loose toxins was a simple task, no harder than purifying drinking water or odours from a room.
But that efficiency had attracted the attention of the military, who were swarming all over the world.
They had destinations in mind, the way that they were headed directly for somewhere and not slowing down to search. So, Wolfe focused on them and cast listening spells in the vehicles of a few officers.
[Location seventeen is four minutes out. The last known population was fifteen Ciel. Harvester teams prepared.] The communicator was saying.
It wasn’t a radio, the way that he was used to, or even a cell phone, but some sort of artificial magical device.
That was fascinating, and Wolfe wondered just how far their knowledge had come.
An alarm blared. [Outside energy signature detected. Searching for the source now.]
Wolfe checked the energy, but he didn’t see anyone. They must have been able to sense his own magic usage.
The soldiers stopped the strange half – tracked vehicle and rushed toward a bunker, while the Ciel waited anxiously.
“That was our bunker.” One of them whispered in horror as she followed Wolfe’s listening spell to its target.
“So, they knew where you were, they were waiting to take you until they needed your blood.” Wolfe muttered.
That was more than a little horrifying, but they had far more targets than Wolfe had found.
Once they were out of the vehicle, Wolfe opened a small portal and grabbed the operational maps, which had full details on all twenty sites.
“They know nothing of operational security.” Priya chuckled as Wolfe read the map.
“What is that?” One of the Ciel asked.
“We will explain later. It’s a measure to prevent this.”
The Ciel were confused, but then Wolfe opened twenty portals, some of which were to the empty rooms where he had found survivors. The others led to rooms full of bodies, or collapsed bunkers that had been destroyed in the previous conflict.
The best thing that Wolfe could do was to burn the remainder of the bodies after searching for survivors that he hadn’t previously spotted. Once he was certain that there was no saving them even with a Saint Rank witch, Wolfe purged the resting spots of the Ciel so that there was nothing left for the humans to use to make weapons.
