Chapter 1063: 1063 Harsh Facts
Wolfe sat in shock, stunned by the revelation of how the war had started. The government of the One World Alliance had turned the army on their own people for daring to free the slaves and attempt to hold open elections.
But that was fairly predictable, some people loved money and power more than anything else, and they would do anything that they could to get more of it.
But once the numbers they were stating started to sink in, the true horror of the war became clear to Wolfe.
They had talked about wiping out an entire continent to try to stop the rebellion. The Magi had sunk an entire continent as a memorial to the dead.
Then there was the population. Three billion citizens, and another six billion that they didn’t consider citizens. Those numbers were insane. By The count of the Guardians and Continental Representatives, there were fewer than one billion people on the planet right now, and many considered that to be near the maximum that could be sustained without magical assistance.
Of course, Wolfe had just learned that the Magi had deliberately removed the natural resources from the surface to stop the humans from mass-producing weapons of war, But the soil shouldn’t have changed that much in the majority of the world.
So, either they had much more advanced agriculture technology, which seemed unlikely, as it should have survived somewhere in the world, or the Witches had been keeping the whole world running before the war.
The thought of what the world must have looked like with nine billion people in it was in intriguing one. Rural and remote areas must have been rare, or the population in the cities must have been immense to have that many people in the world and still have room for crops and wilderness.
Perhaps the Fortress Cities weren’t massive gathering spots for the survivors of the war, but just normal cities that had been fortified against the aftermath?
There were nearly ten million people in Morgana Fortress, and at least half that many in Sylvan City, but there were only a few other major cities in the western half of the continent, with no signs of abandoned major population centres.
There were many abandoned villages, but the sort of million person cities that should have been everywhere when there were nine billion people were nowhere to be found.
There might be more on the other continents that Wolfe hadn’t visited in person, but the crystal hadn’t gone into great detail about the war, it just covered the essential facts that involved the Noxus Family.
The next scene started, and Wolfe found himself looking at an oceanfront community made of white marble homes neatly arranged in what Wolfe recognized as the rune points for a defensive spell array.
The array itself was likely drawn underneath them, so if you wanted to deactivate it, you would need to destroy the houses that were placed on top of it.
An Elderly woman was standing at the gate to the community next to a young man, and they were both facing down a group of three men in suits, who were standing next to a military staff car.
It was a stylish vehicle, though armoured. The armour was most likely just a precaution, as it wasn’t well-equipped for war, and looked more suited to delivering passengers on a smoothly paved road.
“Good afternoon, Elder Madam Noxus. We are here for your updated town census and tax collection. How many citizens and how many slaves reside within your village?” The man asked politely.
Wolfe could see the thinly veiled disgust as he spoke the woman’s name, but his tone remained professional through it all.
“We have a total of seventeen hundred and eight citizens, no slaves.” She replied evenly.
“Madam, are you aware of the regulation stating that only property owners are considered citizens? All who do not own property, including children who have not been granted property from their parents’ estate, are slaves, and property of the state.” The man insisted.
The young man beside the Elder handed over a small folder, and the Elder made a dismissive gesture.
“Yes, we were informed of the change. To think, they would go so far as to enslave the children of free citizens just to get workers. But you will find that all of our documents are in order. The housing association’s fractional ownership plan has been approved as a legal ownership standard by your congress, so every resident here is a citizen, with an ownership stake in one or more properties.
Those who are of age also own a property outright, following your previous rulings.” The old woman informed them.
The man in the back of the visiting group flipped through the pages before gesturing to an entry.
“Why does this person have a birthdate that is four months from now?” He asked.
“We had the Witches divine the birth, as is our custom, and a land deed was placed in trust in their name. As such, they will be born a citizen, and by law should be included in the roll.”
The three men didn’t seem happy about that, but one took a picture of the page in question and sent it to someone else. They waited in silence for a few minutes, then frowned as the response came back.
“It seems that everything is in order. Your method of providing land before birth has been verified as a legal measure to ensure the offspring of citizens remain citizens.
Thank you for your cooperation.” The man holding the folder informed them, then all three turned and left in their armoured car.
The young man shook his head as they drove away. “What is their government playing at? Granting land to a slave doesn’t free them, but now they insist that all children without land are automatically slaves.
Of course, they would have a loophole to allow their own children to remain citizens, but it seems they didn’t think we would find out.”
The old woman sighed. “I suspect that it won’t be long before they do something drastic. I have heard from other places on the continent that parents whose children were taken from them after the change in the law have begun to form revolutionary groups.
If they aren’t careful, the people will rise against their idiocy and burn their beloved factories to the ground.
Perhaps I should go to the Magi Council and have them block approval for off world portals until this matter is settled.”
