Chapter 1021: 1021 Lame Party

An hour into the social event celebrating the deal that they had made with Gormana, and Wolfe was ready to leave. The high society people of Gormana were just insufferable, especially now that they were feeling so smug about the fact that their nation was the first on the coast to have power back, as well as the Garden Charm.

Even the Prime Minister was beginning to look annoyed, and he was the most respected member of their social circle.

“This is why we do social events as a whole city. If these were the first people in the nation you met, you’d think that they were personally responsible for the improvements, or that they had some sort of role in bringing them to fruition.

The ones who benefit the most are definitely throwing a better party.” Wolfe whispered to the Prime Minister.

“I can’t argue with that, but they have all the political influence. The people follow their opinions, and they operate all but one of the news channels. Well, technically all, since my minister of communications is here as well, and he is in charge of the national broadcaster.

But normally politicians enjoy these sorts of things. Your wives are powerful witches, so did you not grow up in high society within the Morgana Coven Fortress? I am told that’s where you are from.” The Prime Minister quietly replied.

Wolfe gave the man a genuine smile. “The Noxus Family is an organized crime group within the Fortress City. The witches couldn’t control it all, so the citizens started running things on their own not long after the war.

Now, it has changed in the last year, and they have become more legitimate political forces. But when I was living there, they ran basically everything on the lower floors where I grew up, and the only time the witches would get involved is when law enforcement tried to move in and restore order after a major conflict.

For everything else, the Families ran it. The stores, the transport and taxi companies, the couriers, gambling, drugs, liquor, everything.”

The Gormana Prime Minister looked shocked.

“How do things actually operate there, if the Mafia runs everything?” He asked.

Ella chuckled. “Quite smoothly, actually. Do you know what happens when you cross the Mafia or break the rules?”

The Prime Minister nodded grimly, and Ella continued.

“Then you understand how things worked. The laws were largely irrelevant, and you followed the rules instead. My family runs a mechanic’s shop in the Fortress. I’m the first Witch born in my direct lineage in over a century. When you get right down to it, the Crime Families are actually more civilized than most politicians.

In most places there is backstabbing, intrigue, sabotage, betrayal and so on. It goes on because nobody can stop them with the law. But the Families just make people go missing when that happens. If you betray or cross your own people, even your Family’s enemies will disappear you after accepting your help because you’re not trustworthy. So it’s very rare anyone would do it.”

Galrog the Wrathbringer nodded in agreement. “Public executions keep people civilized. When they see drama and betrayal as a game, and the court system as a fine to pay with bribes to dodge consequences, order breaks down.

But if you start chopping off heads, they start to take things seriously and begin acting right.”

“And he’s not just saying that because he enjoys it.” Cassie teased the massive demon.

The representatives from Rencland and Kanheim made their way over not long after that, looking exhausted from meeting with so many people who had grand plans and “Just needed a little kick-start to get going.”

“How about we all head back early, and meet with the people in Forest Grove? It should be a fine mess there today, with everyone showing up for the next festival, and the new arrivals we have for the academy and the other training programs?” Wolfe suggested.

“Academy?” The representative from Rencland asked.

“Oh, right. You might not know about it yet. We are teaching humans with potential how to use magic using a style that we learned from off world visitors. It’s quite effective, and while their potential might be limited, they become very competent at the lower levels.” Wolfe explained.

“Can we discuss this once we get there? Is Gormana already in on it?” The representative asked.

“Of course. They’ve sent a number of promising people over, vetted by their Guardians. You can ask your own to do the same. We have been working to get more teachers, but class sizes will still be larger than we would like this semester. We can surely make a bit of space this term, but if they start in the spring, we can likely get more teachers.” Wolfe agreed easily.

“And the Guardians will be able to tell who has potential?” The representative asked.

“Of course. It’s the same test that they use on children to determine their potential before they can use magic in the Demon Realm.”

The representative from Kanheim looked suspicious. “What’s in it for you?”

“Other than loyalty to their alma mater? Not much. It’s a program to sort out the resource crisis situations all over the continent. If we didn’t do it here, the guardians would bring volunteers to the Demon Realms, and who knows if you would get them back.” Wolfe explained.

“The Demon Realms really are that dangerous?”

Ella smirked, while Cassie coughed to hide her laughter.

“The most likely culprits would be the Lust Demons, and after you introduced a bunch of teenagers to an entire city of them, do you think they’d be willing to move back home to an impoverished human nation?

Just getting the other Demons to go home after a vacation can cause issues, and they’ve grown up around them.” Wolfe explained.

The Kanheim representatives personal assistant was laughing with her hand over her mouth, and the man turned to glare at her.

“Seriously Meredith?” He demanded.

“I mean, after thirty years with a husband who thinks that the rodeo and the bedroom arts should both share the same eight-second timer, it’s tempting.” She muttered.

“There’s a spell for that.” Ella informed her.

“Name your price.”
