Chapter 1019: 1019 Downpour
The sudden rain changed the crowd’s enthusiasm for the outdoor press conference, and while Wolfe quickly raised a barrier over the stage to keep the equipment and Guardians dry, he didn’t extend it over the whole crowd.
After so long without rain, nobody had thought to bring an umbrella, it just wasn’t something that they thought they would need.
The Capital was well inland, and the weather didn’t change quickly, or often, so the residents were used to planning things days or weeks in advance, including outfits.
The Prime Minister gestured toward the building. “Let’s move inside a bit earlier than planned. The city needs the rain, and everyone’s gardens will enjoy it. From what I understand, this first round of rain is to help bring the condition of the soil into balance as the new crop growing spell takes effect, so it should continue for some time.”
Nobody needed to be told twice, and the crew immediately began to unplug the power to the microphones and get everything packed up before Wolfe moved and the magical barrier keeping the rain off them disappeared.
Once they were packed, the Prime Minister led everyone inside, and into a meeting room, where a number of other dignitaries were waiting to meet with them. There were a few familiar faces, like the buyer for the farm Cooperative, who had been in Morgana Coven the first time Wolfe flew through.
He had been instrumental in the plan to start growing oil seeds for export, and judging by the tailored suit he was wearing, it had worked out very well for him. There were also two groups of foreigners, whose olive skin and fashion sense set them apart from the pale skin and militaristic fashion sense of the Gormana locals.
“Saint Noxus, I would like you to meet the representatives for Rencland and Kanheim. They were scheduled for meetings this week, regarding plans to provide mutual assistance.” The Prime Minister explained.
And now, Gormana might be able to provide some actual assistance to their landlocked neighbours, both with foods and soon with biofuels and plant oils.
Wolfe nodded politely. “Greetings, Representatives. I don’t believe that our nations have any formal ties, but I have heard good things about your efforts to keep your nations afloat.”
The closer representative, a black-haired man with electric blue eyes that Wolfe would normally associate with a powerful witch, smiled back at him.
“We have been doing our best. But Kanheim is a desert, we never had the sort of industry or population that the other nations did, so we didn’t have as much to lose. We have heard wonderful things about your underground gardens, though.
With your permission, we would like to send visitors in the spring, as it is a long journey with no roads, and winter in the wastes is no place for a caravan.” He requested.
“We can send a plane to get your people, and fly them home, if you would like. We have ones that are suited to landing on soft sand. It’s not a problem for us, or we could send a team to you should you choose to make a deal once you have seen the gardens in person.” Wolfe suggested.
“That would be wonderful, thank you.”
The Prime Minister smiled as he saw Wolfe smoothly draw in another nation. Nobody would say no to his deals once they saw what they were getting. He had seen the pictures that the negotiators had sent back of the underground gardens, as well as the city itself, and he had to admit that it would be nearly impossible not to want it for yourself.
Wolfe turned to the group from Rencland. “Actually, if both your groups would like to travel to Forest Grove with me after the party, we could send you back here after you have a chance to see the city.
I would invite the Prime Minister as well, but I suspect that he’s going to have a very busy few weeks, and it would only burden him further.”
The short man, no more than 155 centimetres tall, who represented Rencland, smiled up at Wolfe.
“Yes, with all this rain, and the magic you used all over the nation, there will be much work for everyone in Gormana. But that is good for us. Gormana shares a border with the south of Rencland, and some of the power plants that you brought online still have lines running into our nation, from the days when we had power-sharing agreements.
That has already been part of our negotiations, but won’t take effect until spring, when they know whether they have the capacity to spare.” He explained.
Wolfe nodded. “That is understandable. Nobody wants to make a deal for things that they cannot spare. But I believe that their power production is currently the highest that it has ever been, so there is some hope that they will have excess, even with the increased demand needed to catch up on infrastructure repairs and other necessary works.”
The Prime Minister motioned for a server to join them with drinks. “The party will start soon, will you all be staying for the duration?”
Wolfe shook his head. “We should head back somewhat early, as there is much to do at home as well. There are visitors from Myrrh Coven and Sylvan Coven coming soon to discuss winter plans, as the monster tide has been unpredictable this year.”
“Understandable. There is always too much work to do. But how are the monsters in the Frozen Wastes this year? I heard that last winter was a particular mess, with the invasion driving the monsters in front of them, then the One World Army showing up.” The Kanheim representative asked.
“They’re not too bad in the wastes. They seem to have changed directions, and they’re hitting harder on the Free Covens and Myrrh Coven borders this year. Plus, there are some strong ones leftover from the curses that the army was spreading to assist them.
We got most of them this summer, but some of the monsters moved into either unpatrolled areas or the mountains, and now they’re coming out to forage at lower elevations.” Wolfe explained.
