“Madam Yu,”
Yu Dong paused as she turned to look at the skinny young woman who was rushing in her direction.
“Moli, what can I help you with?” Yu Dong looked at the little girl with a smile. She felt sorry for Li Moli, who was sent to the battlefield by her family. All because her parents favoured her eldest sister, they sent this twelve-year-old girl to the battlefield.
Fortunately, Xien Zhenya was a kind woman and she didn’t ask Li Moli to join the war. Now Li Moli did small tasks such as cleaning and washing clothes and utensils. Sometimes she would help in the kitchen or massage the soldiers who were working hard on the battlefield.
“Here,” Li Moli smiled and handed the large package that she was carrying on her back to Yu Dong and said to her, “This was sent to you by your family.”
Yu Dong looked at the package and her eyes softened. Even though she hardly sent back a letter, her husbands and family made sure to send one every month. It wasn’t that she didn’t wish to talk to them but Yu Dong was afraid that one day she might stop sending them letters altogether.
She sighed and then took the package from Li Moli before handing her a small pack of jerky.
“Here, eat it together with the rice,” she said to Li Moli, who happily took it.
She didn’t care that it was dried meat as long as it was meat; who cared if it was dried?
Li Moli was happy as long as there was a bit of meat for her to eat in the meal. On the battlefield, even getting a bowl of rice was difficult so how could one imagine getting meat?
Yu Dong also took the package with her and entered her tent. Even though she was not a high-ranking general, she was the one who led the army through many victories; thus, Xien Zhenya was very kind to her and even gave her a tent with all the comforts that the high-ranking general had.
Thus, even though the weather outside was really cold with snow falling on the ground, the tent was really warm with a brazier burning inside.
Yu Dong walked over to the small table and then placed the package on the table before pulling the letter out of the stack of things that her husbands had packed.
She carefully started reading it.
[Dear wife, This is Chen Mi. Last time, it was Brother Liu who wrote the letter but this time it’s my turn so I am the one who wrote this letter. How are you? We are doing alright. Brother Liu and Little Mingzhou are alright. We were thinking of waiting for you to return and name the little princess but then Brother Liu said that you already had a name for our daughter so we started calling her Mingzhou.]
[It seems like you knew from the start that you had to go to the war. There was another attack on the village, even though the drought is no longer continuing. Because of the lack of harvest, there aren’t enough grains in the capital and our village has become the sole target of everyone’s greed. Fortunately, Madam Qiao and Madam Li fought back bravely and sent the attackers running with their tails between their legs. A few of the villagers got hurt but their injuries are not severe.]
[Xiao Hua told me to tell you that he is still waiting for you and has no ideas to marry someone else. He asked me to tell you to stop telling him that you want him to marry someone else. It is an insult to his feelings.]
[Little Jin can now talk without stuttering anymore. He is missing you a lot and so is Little Bo Bo, we call him Chunxiang now, though. It’s quite funny that they can remember you even though you left when they were not capable enough to remember you.]
[Bao Bao and Feng Feng have also started crawling and they look around the house for a long time. Brother Li thinks that they are looking for you as they start crying when they cannot find you.]
[We miss you a lot. Please be safe; that’s all we ask from you. It doesn’t matter if you can win the war. If you think it’s getting too much, then you can run back home; no one will think of you as a coward.]
A drop fell on the paper and stained the black ink, causing it to spread all over the yellowish-white paper. Yu Dong covered her only good eye and lowered her head to wipe the tears that were falling.
“You guys, you really know how to torment me,” Yu Dong spoke in a choked-up manner. The only thing that she missed more than anything on the battlefield was her family.
She wished she could go back in time and stop Yu Linyun from causing harm to the village before it was too late. But no matter how much she wished for it, the miracle never happened. Every day she woke up between the screams of horror and sometimes wondered if she was back in the apocalyptic times.
She was also furious with Xien Xieren. Even though that woman was close to getting defeated, she did not give up easily. Instead she continued to hire more dark arts practitioners to harm her and Xien Zhenya.
“Madam Yu! Hurry outside; the enemies have attacked. They have brought a new dark arts master and he is controlling the beasts!”
Yu Dong wiped her eyes and then picked up her sword before rushing out.
When she hurried out, she saw a bunch of beasts rushing towards their camps and her eyes flashed with annoyance. She said to the general who stood beside her, “Unleash the beasts that I brought with me and follow me.”
“Yes!” the general replied as she turned to the shed where the beasts brought by Yu Dong were kept while the others went to prepare for the fight.
