The wounded women screamed and howled like they were on the edge of dying.
“Leader Gao, what should we do now?” One of the women who was not guarding the shack looked at the broken planks. The children inside were missing and only their people were harmed by the thunder strike.
“It must be heaven’s punishment!” Another woman chimed from the side with a trembling voice. She looked at the broken pieces of the wooden shack and the injuries of the women who were guarding the shack.
Her lips trembled as she took a step back and cried, “This must be heaven’s punishment for doing too many bad things.”
As soon as those words were spoken the rest of the women also stepped away from the ones who were lying on the ground. It was as if the women who were struck by lightning were carrying some really dangerous disease that might affect them as well.
Leader Gao frowned at the woman who had spoken and raised her hand before smacking her right across her head. She sneered and said, “Have you lost your dumb mind? What do you mean by crimes? What do you mean by the punishment of heavens?”
“There is no such thing! Don’t waste your time!”
“But…But …”
“No buts!” Leader Gao grew up doing all kinds of crimes and she had not once been punished for her actions, if anything the more crimes she committed the more comfortable her life became.
What did this silly woman mean by saying that they were being punished by the heavens? Speaking nonsense with open eyes.
When the woman heard Leader Gao’s words, she pursed her lips and turned silent. She did not say anything more but at the same time she eyed the women who were struck by lightning, no matter what Leader Gao said, she was certain that there was something really wrong about this situation.
If this was not the punishment of the heavens, what was it!?
“You all too! Stop wasting your time and go look for the children!” Leader Gao ordered the rest of the women. “They are the key to our better lives, if you don’t find them, then there is no need to come back! I am not using useless people like you who still believe in foolish things such as punishment of the heavens.”
“This was just a freak accident and nothing else! Don’t believe in foolish things! I have stabbed, killed and sold more than a thousand people in my life— why was I not punished back then? Because there is no such thing as punishment of heavens!”
“Go and bring me back the children! If we don’t find them then we are all dying in this village, do you get it!?”
After speaking Leader Gao walked past the rest of the women and marched down the forest, she was not going to let her golden geese fly away.
Among those children were mers whom she was going to sell for more than a hundred gold of taels! She could not lose them!
What heavens? Nothing was more scary than losing her gold coins!
Without gold, she was going to starve!
Was it a small matter?
The women looked at one another before gritting their teeth and hurrying after their leader. What could they do? They did not want to starve to death!
On the other side, the children were following Yu Mai like chicks following mother hen. Even though Yu Mai asked them to scatter around as it would make it difficult for the human traffickers to find them they did not listen.
They all wanted to follow him!
Yu Mai was speechless.
He wanted to say something but he refrained himself.
Of course, the children were following Yu Mai, they just saw him summon lightning like a little blessed boy, in the eyes of these children, Yu Mai was the spirit that protected the children.
The very same one that their parents told them about.
So how could they leave him?
“Do they not understand that we will be caught easily like this huh?” Kong Li said to her sister with a frown on her face, though her voice was rather low as she said those words.
Kong Pili glanced at the children and whispered back, “Let them follow, some of them are really young and are scared.”
“But if they follow us then the kidnappers will catch us in no time—”
No sooner did she finish speaking there was the sound of footsteps. The two sisters turned around and looked behind them, it was Leader Gao and her minions!

“RUN!!” Kong Pili shouted at the rest of the children who were startled and then started running around, but even though they were running they dared not get away from Yu Mai.
Yu Mai turned around and looked at the women who were chasing after him. He thought about it a little and then said decisively, “You better stop or else you will be punished!”
“Hah! Look at you, you little punk! You dare to actually threaten me! I, Leader Gao, had never been threatened before!” Leader Gao sneered as she ran towards Yu Mai. She swore to sell this mer for a good deal, for all the troubles he had given her.
Yu Mai saw that the woman was not listening to him. He sighed and then pressed the button of the new modified bracelet.
“I did tell you to stop, so I am not a bad mer, alright?” Yu Mai said to the women who were rushing over to where he was standing.
A sense of foreboding rose in the heart of the women but it was already too late for them to stop themselves.
So, when they arrived close to Yu Mai, they saw a string of lightning attacking them—
AHHHHHHHHHHhhhhhhHHHHHHHHH
The women screamed in terror on the spot.
