Madam Kong hurried over to her daughters’ room. She knocked on the door and said, “Pili? Li Li? Mother is coming in okay?”
Usually, her eldest daughter always responded to her but for some reason, no one answered Madam Kong today. A bit surprised, she frowned and pushed the door open.
No one was inside the room.
Seeing the empty room, Madam Kong frowned and suddenly she too started feeling a bit nervous. She turned on her feet and then marched over to the kitchen.
“Madam?” Guo Zian who was kneading the floor for the noodles turned around and looked at his wife. He blinked his eyes and questioned, “Whats the matter? Did something happen?”
“I am looking for Pili and Ah Li,” replied Madam Kong as she turned her head left and right around the kitchen but she still did not see her daughters. What the—
She turned around and pinned Master Xiao with his gaze, “Where are the two of them?”
Master Xiao was still upset with how his daughters acted with him in the morning. He sullenly replied, “They went out to play.”
“I know that too, Madam Yu told me that they are playing with her brother. But where exactly are they playing?” Madam Kong asked in a hurried voice.
“How am I supposed to know that?” Master Xiao answered guiltily. “They just told me that they are going to play outside and I let them go.”
“What do you mean ‘outside’? Where did they go? Are you talking about the garden in the inn or outside the inn?” Madam Kong asked with an enraged voice. She suddenly understood why she was feeling nervous just now, it was because of this!
“O—Outside,” replied Master Xiao dumbly when he saw that his wife was getting angry.
“Outside? Who went with them? Who did you send the two with?”
“T—They went alone…”
Madam Kong was so angry upon hearing this that she swayed on her feet.
“Madam!”
“Wife!”
Her husbands came to support her as she stabilised her footing. With her hand pressed on her throbbing temples, she turned and looked at the mer who stared at her in shock.
Even now he seemed like he did not see what he had done wrong.
“Are you fucking crazy or are you a complete fool?” Madam Kong asked angrily. “How could you let my daughters leave the inn? Do you not know that there are human traffickers who pick and sell children to anyone? Some refugees will eat anything to survive! Is your brain filled with mushy goo? Is that what you have inside of your head?!
Why did you not stop them from running out!”
Master Xiao was already holding back a lot of anger from the afternoon. His daughter had scolded him and now his wife was scolding him too.
He smashed the roller in his hand on the floor before saying angrily, “Is it my fault!? You have doted on them too much and spoiled them. They have started to get rebellious, they don’t listen to me at all.”
“You—” Madam Kong was so angry that she wanted to hit Master Xiao, but when she thought about her daughters she held back. “They don’t listen to you can’t you still send a servant with them? How could you let them run around alone? You could have come to me at the least!”
“I thought that they were sensible and return home soon, how would I know that they would stay outside for so long.”
“You fool! Do you even know how it is outside?” Madam Kong roared at Master Xiao. She nearly went mad because of this mer, how could he let their daughters run outside like that!
“Are you telling the truth, Master Xiao?” Madam Kong’s second husband, Jing Yicheng, looked at Master Xiao with narrowed eyes.
Master Xiao jumped when he heard Master Jing’s question. He turned to look at him and stammered, “W—What do you mean? Are you trying to say that I am lying?”
“No, I am not saying that you are lying,” sneered Master Jing. “I am just making an assumption, like you said. Your daughters are sensible, so how could they leave the house without informing anyone about leaving the house, not to mention they have someone with them! One of the children of the guests, do you think that the two of them would do something foolish in such a situation?”
Master Xiao gulped. He wanted to say something but Madam Kong was much sharper than him. She had been married to him for so long, would she not know what kind of mer, she had married?
She immediately noticed that there was something amiss. She narrowed her eyes and questioned, “What did you do? Out with it, Xiao Xiao! Tell me the truth when I am being kind.”
Master Xiao was nervously sweating. He did not want to be scolded or beaten by his wife, so he lied through his teeth, “I did not do anything. They must have gone to their friend’s house, just go and ask around, what are you losing your temper on me?”
“You—”
“Leave this matter for the time being, madam,” said Guo Zian as he glanced at Master Xiao. Though he had a lot of sympathy for this mer, now it seemed to have been washed away.
This mer was just as selfish as his family, his daughters were missing and yet —
Guo Zian sighed and then turned to look at his wife before saying, “You should go and talk with Madam Yu since her brother is missing as well…we cannot leave her hanging.”
Madam Kong glared at her husband. She snarled and said to him, “You just wait! If something happens to my daughters, I will divorce you!”
This time around the threat seemed to have scared Master Xiao, he blinked his eyes and went to say something but was stopped by Guo Zian—
“Master Xiao, we should first look for your daughters. Everything else, we will talk later on, okay?”
Master Xiao wanted to refuse and say that he wanted to talk now but upon seeing the look in the eyes of Guo Zian, he immediately turned silent
