“What you are doing is harming your cherished Bonds, Lavinia.
Stop it this instant.”
The Dragon instructed with a solemn look on his face, and Lavinia…
She just stared at the dragon in disbelief and… guilt.
T-To think that all this while, she had been harming her Bonds…
To think they were forced to live in such a cruel world without any powers to defend themselves because of her.
To think instead of empowering them like they deserved to, she weakened them instead…
Lavinia’s heart shuddered at that thought. Once again, grief engulfed her. Soon, however, she aggressively shook her head and forced herself to not grieve her loss.
She purposefully remembered the time she spent with her Bonds, the time they hatched, the times they played together, and the times they learned together. She thought of every good memory she could think of, but Igni’s words were simply too heavy for her to forget.
She couldn’t force herself to be happy no matter how hard she tried to. It was almost as if she had no control over her mind and emotions.
Her body began to tremble again. She tightly held Kael’s hand, trying to calm herself, but it wasn’t easy.
“It isn’t supposed to be easy.”
Suddenly, Igni spoke again.
The Princess stared at the Dragon, her eyes desperate for a solution.
“You are a human. You cannot force yourself to feel a certain way.”
Igni, however, shook his head.
“Your happiness must come naturally for it to work, and it won’t happen just because you think of being happy.
You must truly feel the happiness with your heart.”
“…How do I do that?”
Lavinia questioned in a weak voice.
“Relive those memories.”
Igni answered.
“What…?”
“The only way to overpower your grief would be to relive the memories you cherished so much.”
“H-How do I relive my memories…?”
“Form new Bonds.”
Igni answered directly.
“…What?”
Lavinia couldn’t believe what she was hearing.
New Bonds?
Did he want her to forget about her Bonds and start anew?
The Princess hated that thought.
And as if knowing that,
“I do not want you to forget your cherished Bonds. They do not deserve to be forgotten, but hurting them isn’t an option either.
Your grief is strong, and it can only be overpowered by new, fresh experiences. Living in the past would only bring misery to you and your Bonds.
It is time you move on, Lavinia Dragonborn.”
Igni spoke in a heavy voice. Lavinia, however, lowered her head.
“I… I can’t…”
Igni frowned at those words, and the Princess quickly explained herself,
“N-Not because I do not want to, I simply cannot. I can never forget my Bonds. Even if I do form new Bonds, they would never be able to replace them. My love for them wouldn’t be strong enough.
It would be… unfair for the new-borns to be brought to life just so they could replace someone they would never be able to.
I do not wish such a life for any creature, and… I know my Bonds wouldn’t want that either.”
Lavinia smiled lightly, recalling how pure and lovely her friends were.
Slowly, she turned towards Igni and,
“I will try to be happy on my ow—”
“What if they are not new-borns?”
Suddenly, Igni questioned.
“What…?”
The Princess frowned.
“Your new Bonds—what if they are not new-borns? Not just that, what if they know everything you have gone through, what if they understand your state of mind and still wish to form a Bond with you?”
“Huh…?”
Lavinia’s frown deepened. She had no clue who the Dragon was talking about.
Someone who understands her state of mind?
Was he talking about himself?
Does he wish to form a Bond with her?
The instant she thought about it, Lavinia shook her head. She had seen just how obsessively close all these Bonds were with their father. They would never even think of leaving him.
But then who…
As Lavinia thought about it, Kael’s expression changed.
“Igni, you…”
He called out, surprised. Lavinia, who saw his expression, frowned even more.
Did Kael know as well?
She turned towards Igni to see what he would say, and the Dragon nodded at his Father.
“Yes, I am talking about the Elementals.”
“Elementals?”
Lavinia was now even more confused.
“You call them Elements.”
Sensing her confusion, Igni clarified.
“Elements?”
Lavinia tilted her head in confusion.
“You want me to… form a Bond with Elements?”
“That is correct.”
“Is that even possible?”
“For normal humans, no.”
“Then—”
“You are an exception.”
“Huh…?”
Lavinia frowned.
She had heard this before as well. The Dragon had called her an exception in front of the Matriarch as well, and she seemed quite surprised.
“Are you perhaps… talking about the Spirits Matriarch Morvain was talking about before?”
“That is correct.”
Igni nodded again.
“Spirits are nothing more than physical manifestations of Elementals, and surprisingly, they love you quite a lot. They were around you even when I first saw you. From the looks of it, they have always been around you, taking care of you.
This is also the reason you are so talented in Magic. You must have never faced a bottleneck in your life.”
“I… have not.”
Lavinia nodded. From the First Circle all the way to the Seventh Circle, she had never once faced a hurdle. It was to the point that she felt surprised when some other mage mentioned something like a bottleneck.
“So that was because…”
“Yes, the Elementals—or the Elements—were always by your side. You cannot see them because you are a human, but even now, they surround you and wish to be with you.
They do not just wish to be present for you anymore—they wish to interact with you and help you.”
“They… wish to interact with me?”
“Yes, you will be able to see them in their spirit form if you form a Bond with them.”
Igni nodded, then, with a serious look on his face,
“Do not ignore their goodwill, Lavinia.
Do not hurt the beings who only wish the best for you.”
He spoke, and after thinking about it for a minute, a determined look appeared on Lavinia’s face, and,
“A-Alright, if they are willing to accept me,
Then I wish to form a Bond with them as well.”
The Princess decided.
