I followed the arrow on the compass to hunt down the Sand Leviathan.

One might wonder why I'm even doing this since I'm not even involved but I just felt a little bad for that girl I guess.

Flying a short distance behind me was Katsuki being carried by Eins, both of them keeping a lookout for any signs of our quarry below.

We've already flown for at least close to half an hour but the arrow still pointed in a single direction without moving, that meant that the Sand Leviathan should still be in that direction. Experience exclusive tales on My Virtual Library Empire

We flew for a while more before the needle suddenly spun around to point in the opposite direction, prompting me to flare my wings to stop myself.

Eins had also done the same thing, my Shadow Guard stopping right beside me.

"What's wrong, Mistress?" Katsuki asked while still being carried underneath Eins.

"The needle turned around, that means we passed over where the Sand Leviathan is."

Katsuki looked back at the stretch of desert that we had just passed, which obviously showed no signs of the Sand Leviathan on the surface at all.

That means it's most likely still underground.

Both of us flew down towards the sand and I hovered close to the ground as we started retracing our flight path, my eyes fixed on the compass needle.

The moment it turned back again, I stopped and pointed directly underneath, "Right here."

Katsuki looked down at the ground, "How does Mistress intend to bring the Sand Leviathan out?"

"We make a lot of noise and force it out~" I answered her with a grin before raising my hand.

Using Geomancy, I gathered up an entire bunch of sand from the ground right above the location where I believe the Sand Leviathan to be.

When I had gathered it to form a giant sand ball, I threw it on the ground with enough force to shake the surrounding sand and causing some of the sand dunes to topple over.

My plan was to cause enough vibrations in the sand to annoy the Sand Leviathan and force it to come out from underneath the sand.

But right as I was planning to create another sand ball, the ground beneath us suddenly collapsed and I found myself falling downwards.

Katsuki immediately grabbed me while Eins held on to her and flapped her wings, propelling all of us up into the air.

I held onto Katsuki as I looked down into the hole, wondering what caused the sudden collapse of the ground.

That was when I realised that the sand had collapsed to reveal a cavern underneath the sand and the body of the Sand Leviathan could be seen inside it.

What's more, the Sand Leviathan seems to be moving slowly towards the right, the monster having shown no signs of it noticing us.

Ok, that makes things so much more easier!

Just as I was preparing to dive into the hole and attack the Sand Leviathan, I suddenly heard voices coming from the side of the cavern that the Sand Leviathan was travelling in.

"We're almost there, right?"

"Yeah, just a bit more and we would be reaching the base."

"Ugh… I can't wait to take a shower to wash all this off…"

"Me too…"

Wait… Base? What the heck is going on? And they're talking so casually while in the presence of the Sand Leviathan? Is the monster already dead?

I turned to Katsuki and she was also giving me a look that told me she wasn't sure what was going on either.

The good thing was that they didn't seem to have realised that a hole had opened up above them, though I'm assuming it's due to the fact that the body of the Sand Leviathan was blocking their sight of the hole.

Deciding that there was no other way to proceed, I jumped into the hole with Eins and Katsuki following after me.

I prepared myself for a fight when I landed on the Sand Leviathan's back, thinking that the monster would definitely sense me and try to shake me off which would alert everyone else to my presence.

But surprisingly, the Sand Leviathan did not do that and merely continued to slither along the tunnel.

Now that I was inside, I realised that the tunnel itself seemed to be made of sand that was hardened into paste somehow so that they stick together instead of flow individually like how sand behaves.

I clung to the Leviathan's back and started crawling towards the front where I heard the voices come from.

It didn't take me long to reach the head of the Sand Leviathan and the sight in front of me left me quite confused.

The bandits that I had seen get swallowed up by the Sand Leviathan was now at the front riding on some kind of bipedal sand lizard which I guessed was the mount they used to attack the travellers in the first place.

Then right behind them were all the travellers that they had kidnapped earlier, including a female Mahun Mercenary who had been stripped of her weapons.

All of them had their arms tied up and were forced to walk along while being escorted by the bandits.

The Sand Leviathan was also still alive since it was moving along by itself instead of being pulled along but yet it didn't seem to be hostile to the people walking in front of it.

That was when it hit me.

Those guys riding on the flying mounts must have tamed the monsters to make them obedient to them. That means there must be a pretty powerful Kalomancer in their midst so if they could tame those creatures, this Sand Leviathan might have been tamed as well.

Oh wow… The Sand Leviathan was their way of escaping from the scene after they had grabbed what they needed and to dissuade pursuers since the others would think that the bandits and the people they took would have died from the Sand Leviathan attack.

In reality, the Sand Leviathan had been on the bandits' side all along and taking them all in its mouth, it would then travel underground beneath the sand to escape from the area and sneak out from there with their captured goods.

If it wasn't for the fact that this group had something valuable that they were tracking using this compass, I would not have found them either.

I guess for this, the bandits had a stroke of bad luck.

At this point, I could just attack the bandits and rescue the captured travellers, but it looks like they were currently moving back to their base so I made the decision to just wait for now to see where their base was and possibly wipe them out for good.

I would have saved them if the tunnel was only going in a single direction but it seems like this wasn't just a single underground tunnel but instead, it was a network of them as there were junctions and multiple paths leading to god knows where.

Those were either tunnels made to throw off pursuers and people that stumbled into the tunnels by accident, or maybe paths that led to other places where they would do their raids.

The bandits were pulling the captured travellers along and if they tried to resist, one of them would be quick to lash out a whip at them to get them back in line.

Sometimes, if they felt the travellers were moving too slow, they would also lash out the whip at them as well.

As much as I wanted to stop it, I had to ignore that for now to not give away my position.

This continued on for another good ten or so minutes before the tunnel started to curve upwards and light could be seen at the other end.

When we emerged from the tunnel, I found myself in the middle of a large courtyard surrounded by buildings made of desert stone with what appears to be a camouflage netting stretched overhead.

All around, I could see various armed men and women walking around, all of them clearly bandits.

Not only that, there were also monsters and other creatures accompanying those bandits, some of them merely patrolling around while others seemed to be put to work on building structures or carrying goods around.

In the distance, I could see there was even a wall with battlements set up that had mounted siege machines on top of them.

I realised that this was not just a bandit camp but an actual fortress that someone had built.

Judging by the size of the place, I would estimate there to be a good few hundred or so people here.

The travellers were also looking around and I guess they realised that escape was definitely not possible in this place and their faces fell immediately.

As for me, there was only one thing going through my mind when I saw the defenses of this place.

They were all prepared to defend themselves from an attack from outside their walls… But what if the attack came from inside their walls instead, hmmm?

Guess we're going to find out~
