Transcendent Dawn

Chapter 663: Purple Moon

Because his classmate, George, invited Morphy to play in the abandoned sawmill after they had finished visiting the exhibition, by the time Morphy returned home to his humble shanty at 69 Black Iron Street, a faint shadow of the purple moon had already emerged in the sky.

“The Purple Moon…”

Morphy muttered to himself, quickened his pace, entered the house, shut the door, and then finally let out a sigh of relief.

In the legends, the purple moon is often equated with evil; for instance, hooligans and killers like to act at night.

Hence, people in this world, unless necessary, would not leave their homes when night falls.

“Morphy? You’re back; why so late? What if you encounter the ‘Black Moon’?”

A voice of a young woman came from the next room – it was his sister Joanne.

The so-called ‘Black Moon’ refers to those few days without any moonlight. In the sheer darkness, unspeakable horrors are born, and those who disappear in this period never leave a single trace behind.

“Sorry…Sis, there was an event at school today…”

Morphy instinctively lied as he quickly stripped off his school uniform and hung it up.

This was his only good piece of clothing, which had to be aired out every day after school to prevent wrinkling, so he could wear it to school the next day.

“There’s bread in the closet…”

Joanne’s voice came again, followed by what seemed like the sound of her turning over and going back to sleep.

Morphy opened the closet, took out half a loaf of black bread, which was mixed with a lot of bran and was quite coarse. It had to be softened in hot soup before he could eat it.

After thinking for a moment, he went to the stove to boil water and ate the bread with it for dinner.

Just satisfying his hunger, Morphy then went to his room.

The small room contained only a bed and a table, positioned very close to each other, with the bed replacing a chair. On the table were a few discarded metal parts – his ‘treasures’ that he risked getting beaten for picking up from nearby.

Additionally, there were several books, some of which were much worn, their covers hanging by threads.

Morphy lit the gas lamp and sat on the bed. In the orange light, the names of the books were made visible:

“A Brief History of the World”

“Some Basic Mechanical Knowledge”

“Standard Language”

“Exploring The Castle At Night – A Collection of Detective Solomon’s Stories”

His sister Joanne was an incredible person who sent him to Baixi Mechanical High School using the savings left by their deceased parents and the money she worked hard to earn. This was a matter of envy for all the boys in Black Iron Street.

If he could graduate, he could become a junior mechanic and wouldn’t have to be sent to work in a factory at a young age like his peers, bent over from heavy work and plagued with numerous diseases.

Morphy looked at the light, was momentarily lost in thought, then opened “Some Basic Mechanical Knowledge”, started to measure and learn by comparing with the few metal parts in his hand.

However, after a moment, he irritatedly pushed what was in his hand onto the table, his gaze sweeping over the collection of the investigator’s stories.

“Demons… Do they really not exist?”

In the depths of Morphy’s heart, he hid a little secret – he was a ‘Extraordinary’ person with naturally heightened senses!

At a very young age, he could see strange things and hear certain sounds.

Even on the night when his ‘parents disappeared’, he saw…

Recalling this, Morphy couldn’t help but rub his forehead. A painful expression emerged on his face: “I swear I will find the truth!”

He muttered to himself.

But Morphy now had no mood to hard study mechanics. He could only flip through random books.

He opened “A Brief History of the World” and began to read quickly.

“According to modern historians, the history of our world can be simply divided into before and after the Purple Moon… This is also the boundary between ancient history and modern history.”

“In ancient times, the moon in the sky was not purple, and there was no ‘Black Moon Phenomenon’. It wasn’t until the first Purple Moon emerged that a large number of blood-thirsty creatures were born in the wilderness. This directly led to the collapse of the brilliant ancient Bilun Empire… and thus ended the ancient history.”

“After that, the Purple Moon Calendar began. Humans went through an extremely dark period until the famous mechanic and founder of magical devices, Master Kirfen, appeared. He created the first generation of magical devices and humans gained the power to resist the bloodthirsty creatures!”

“In the 223rd year of the Purple Moon Calendar, the Sumerneil Empire was established, ushering in the heyday of magical device technicians, boasting a brilliant civilization for more than a thousand years… until the famous ‘Rose Revolution’ in the 1567th year of the Purple Moon Calendar. The Sumerneil Empire plunged into a full-scale civil war and subsequently disintegrated…”

“Time moved forward to the year 1687, three kingdoms were built on the ruins of the Sumerneil Empire. They were the Surida Kingdom in the north, the Sass Kingdom in the west, and the Kinsley Kingdom, where I live.”

“These three great kingdoms each inherited part of the Sumerneil Empire’s legacy, developing it further and took different paths in mechanics. For instance, the Kinsley Kingdom perfected ‘Bio-mechanics’ over generations of scientists. The mechanical prosthesis they produced can perfectly replace the original flesh and blood organs, while Surida Kingdom’s Magic Tattoo Technology is the most advanced. The Sass Kingdom, although archaic and conservative, has inherited the terrifying legacy of the ancient mechanics…”

“Each country used the power of machines to maintain the regime and combat the monsters in the wilderness… For this purpose, they established a specialized ‘Investigators’ agency…”

After reading, Morphy’s expression gradually calmed.

“But… Are the monsters known to humans everything? Are there truly no monsters that aren’t made of flesh and blood? Then what did I see?”

He mumbled something, yawned, turned off the gas lamp, and lay down on the bed.

As he drifted to sleep, Morphy seemed to see the ‘Starry Love’ again in his haze.

“Yawn…”

It was morning.

Morphy got up and stretched: “Why do I feel so tired last night? I slept all night, didn’t I?”

He touched his head, feeling a throbbing sensation in his temples, as if there was something extra in his brain.

Morphy entered the living room to find Joanne wearing an apron and preparing breakfast.

Seeing him, her burgundy eyes immediately filled with suspicion: “Didn’t you sleep well last night?”

Joanne appeared to recall something and sped into his room, rummaging through the bed.

“Sis… What are you doing?”

Morphy was clueless.

“Ahem… I think I need to discuss health issues of adolescent boys with you.”

Joanne spoke very seriously.

“I… I just stayed up a bit late reading…” Morphy responded, not knowing why he felt a bit guilty.

“Really? Then let me ask you, what are the components to construct a double loop magic pattern?”

“Stability! And sufficient Baixi concentrate!”

Morphy blurted out, seeing Joanne’s surprised eyes.

He was surprised as well, because this was knowledge he hadn’t mastered yet.

All of a sudden, he realized what the extra stuff in his head was.

It was knowledge!
