Chapter 632: The Way to Assemble

The timeline rewinds a bit.

As Asmodeus waves his hand, several demons leap from the castle walls. However, they are stopped by Elna. The demons retreat back to the walls after being intercepted by her.

"You won't get through!"

The first demon to move was targeting the allied forces that had retreated to the rear. Elna couldn't let them go. Seeing Elna calmly handle multiple demons, the demons' expressions change. They are reminded of the power of the Hero's descendant.

But Elna wasn't the only enemy they had to face.

"Risk it all— soar through the heavens, become rain, and return to the earth! Mystic Bow Technique... Concentrated Diffusion Sky Rain!"

Arrows fired by Jack rain down from the sky. The demons each take measures to counter it. Asmodeus effortlessly blocks it, as do his nearby aides. However, not everyone manages to block it. Some dodge, sensing they can't fully defend against it.

"Seems like even demons have ranks," Jack mutters.

The demon impersonating Crown Prince Lucian seemed exceptional even to Jack. But if the demons are only capable of dodging his current attack, they can be dealt with. Right now, the priority is to reduce their numbers. That's when Jack makes his decision.

"Fire!"

Countless arrows and spells fly from the allied forces. Since the Crown Prince has been possessed by a demon, there's no need to worry about collateral damage to the royal capital. The safety of the capital's citizens is already compromised. Therefore, Leo orders a long-range attack from the entire army. He doesn't expect it to be effective, but even demons should find this volume of attacks annoying. Even Leo, one of the top powerhouses in the allied forces, doesn't feel like they can win against the demons on the walls. In other words, most of the allied forces are useless. But they can't just do nothing. At the very least, they have to buy time.

"Duke Stras."

"Yes."

Asmodeus doesn't bother to block the raining arrows and spells. They won't get through. However, to avoid annoying Asmodeus, his aides defend against them. This keeps their hands full, so Asmodeus orders Stras.

"They're in the way."

"Understood."

Stras summons shadow soldiers and orders them to charge at the allied forces. The allied forces try to repel them, but these shadow soldiers are different from before.

"Even rejected specimens have their uses."

"Yes. The ones I just summoned were unfortunately incompatible, but they are more capable than others."

These shadow soldiers and shadow beast soldiers were transformed using a drug developed by the Magical Society, further evolved from the experimental drug tested using Kruger. The drug is made from demi-human components, and when administered to humans, they exhibit demi-human characteristics. When administered to demi-humans, they transform more into beasts. But that's all a front. The real purpose is to find suitable hosts for demons. Whether alive or dead, the host just needs to be strong enough to withstand a demon's power. Finding such a host is difficult. They can't just summon anyone. Summoning also consumes energy. Even for demons, indiscriminate summoning is difficult. Hence the need for selection. That's why the drug was developed. Those who transformed into shadow soldiers and shadow beast soldiers were rejected specimens. They were not suitable as hosts. Only those who didn't transform were suitable as demon hosts. Stras had created countless shadow soldiers for this purpose alone. He didn't expect them to be useful as soldiers. They were just being used because they turned out to be unexpectedly effective. It was like recycling waste. The ones Stras sent against the allied forces now were those who had initially resisted transformation. They had eventually succumbed to the drug, but they were much stronger than those who had succumbed from the start.

"Seems like we'll have a tough fight with just that," Asmodeus observes.

He's been watching the allied forces closely. He notices a man rallying the troops, a man with black hair.

"Is that the rumored Adler?"

Asmodeus didn't participate in the war 500 years ago. He didn't follow the Demon King due to a difference in policy. However, he had heard stories about the resilient imperial family. Such people should be crushed as soon as possible.

"A few of you, bring me that man's head."

At Asmodeus' command, three demons leap from the castle walls. Elna and Jack try to stop them but are hindered by other demons. There were too many for just the two of them to hold back. Arrows and spells are continuously fired. The demons approach from the sky, dodging those attacks and targeting Leo.

"I'll take that head!"

The three launch simultaneous attacks. Three different types of attacks head for Leo. By the time he realizes it, it's too late. Busy dealing with the unusually strong shadow soldiers, Leo has completely missed the timing to dodge. He tries to block at the last moment, but the attacks are too powerful. This is bad. Just as Leo thinks this, a barrier appears. A wall materializes between Leo and the demons, completely blocking their attacks without a scratch.

"Is that your full power? There's no need to hold back. My barrier is custom-made, you see."

As she speaks, a massive barrier begins to cover the entire allied forces. The shadow soldiers are also repelled by it. A safe zone that doesn't allow the entry of external enemies is created.

"Celestial Princess Orihime. I have arrived!"

In the sky above the allied forces, Orihime, who has cast the barrier, stands and announces her arrival. The three demons change their target in response. They try to eliminate the master of the barrier. However, they can't. A torrent of black light engulfs two of the three.

"What the—?"

"It's troublesome when you go ahead alone, Celestial Princess-sama."

"Ah, my apologies, No-Name!"

Orihime and her group had successfully teleported near the royal capital from the Empire. From there, Orihime had rushed ahead alone to the royal capital. With her ability to create barriers and run freely within them, Orihime is fast. The only one who could keep up was No-Name. Sighing in exasperation, No-Name stands next to an old dwarf, Egor, who had appeared behind the last demon. The last demon is already out of their consideration.

"No, let's give it to Elder Egor."

"Sorry 'bout that."

After their words, the demon is sliced into pieces. They had already cut him down, so they didn't pay him any more attention.

"You folks sure took your time, huh? Old man and No-Name."

"It's a matter of location. You should be praising the Empire's teleportation technology."

"Speak for yourself. I had to run all the way here!"

Hearing Egoor's words, Jack makes a complicated face. However, the demons' attacks continue. Clicking his tongue at the loss of the three, another demon leaps from the castle walls.

"Useless fools! I'll take care of this myself!"

As the demon leaps from the wall and tries to launch an attack, he, too, is stopped. The royal capital has a large waterway that draws water from a river. That waterway bursts open.

"Calling your allies useless... You lack aesthetic sense."

In a single blow, the demon is sent flying far away by the force of the explosion. Emerging from the waterway, Linares lands next to Egor and the others.

"Did I keep you waiting?"

"Waited, yes, but... why did you come from the waterway?"

"I swam here. From the sea."

Jack feels a headache and holds his head. Then,

"No-Name, should I praise the Empire's magical technology or criticize these muscleheads for being no different?"

"Comparisons should be made on the same playing field. It's not fair to bring up exceptions to belittle others, is it?"

"Fair point," Jack concedes, looking exasperated. Just then, a sailing ship flies in from the sky. Seeing this, Jack's cheeks twitch.

"Can't any of these people arrive in a normal way?"
