“10 years?” Runefather said with a surprised face.
“For some..” Sun God said. “As I said, it is no simple matter. Wars have been fought in my world over this. Protecting the people who were breaking faith was one of the hardest things one had to do. Not knowing when they will wake up..”
“What happens once we are free?” Silverspell asked.
“You can pledge loyalty to another Overseer of your choice and get more strength in return, or you can become Godless. In your case, if you want to save some levels and ascend faster while breaking the faith of another Overseer, you will have to accept me as your Overseer,” replied the Sun God.
‘What does being Godless mean?’ Asher asked.
“I have no idea. All who broke faith accepted me as their Overseer. When I broke faith, I also accepted another Overseer as my own. He died not long after. Even I have only heard it as a rumor from my Overseer, but he once told us that being Godless meant being free of any influence in your divine ascension path. The only way of truly becoming Godless is probably as a newborn in an advanced civilization that is powerful enough to be under no one’s influence.”
“So you chose the first option? Strongest warrior of your species? I thought you were the Sun God..” Worldscribe asked.
“Without any sovereign of fire, my skill made me the strongest fire element user. The sovereigns might be immortal, but nothing can even come close to this form in pure power. Me being the last Overseer is proof of that.”
“What happens to your disciples if you die?” Lifewarden asked.
“Nothing. As long as they have faith, they will receive the benefits. Other than extreme reasons, no one would want to break faith and halve their power. I am not sure if it is even possible to do it for the second time..”
The Sun God left them for a while so they could discuss what they wanted to do. Sesha started with, “Some of us will have to do this another time..”
Runefather quickly replied, “Won’t be me.”
“Or me,” Worldscribe added.
The others also shook their heads one by one. They all wanted to ascend further, and the only way to do it was by breaking their faith. They were too fed up with not being able to ascend for over a century now that they weren’t even thinking about what their decision would result in once they went back. Of course, they could choose not to go back, but it was their home.. For better or worse, people always go back.
Hearing their arguments, Damian finally spoke up. “Fine, I won’t do it. All of you can.. I will take you all back to the pigmen city.”
“You will wait for 10 years for us?” Silverspell asked.
Damian looked at the guy and then at the others and said, “I have decided not to do it. This is your chance — do you want my help or not?”
Asher’s screen flashed: ‘Leave him be. I am going to do it now, you are welcome to join.’
One by one, all the Highswords nodded, showing their agreement. If it was successful, they might become, or would come really close to becoming, a Fourth Ranker. The Demon Lord would be nothing to them anymore.
They called the Sun God and asked him how to do it. The ethereal figure produced six very familiar, golden glowing stones — the Ascension Stones. According to the Sun God, they held a piece of his soul, which was needed for him to have influence over them. He also told them they would have to stay on this planet as long as their ritual lasted.
Holding the Ascension Stone in hand, all six stood in a circle and said aloud — Asher just typed —
“Let no god own what bleeds in me. I break, I burn, and I ascend..”
In an instant, all six figures’ eyes went pure white as a wave of energy flew out of them, circling their bodies and raising them up in the air, keeping their unmoving bodies stable. The energy released more and more until it enveloped all six of them individually in a perfect sphere. It was solid but transparent — Damian could see the unconscious bodies of the six people floating inside peacefully. Finally, the energy stopped being released, and the eyes of each one of them — except Asher’s blank golem face — closed.
The six spheres of different colors of mana and aura stayed in midair, rebelling against gravity. Damian could only sense that a lot of mana was being released from their bodies into the air and nothing else. The aura was not as prominent, but it was mixed in somewhat.
“Is that it?” he asked the floating figure of the Sun God beside him.
“Yes.”
“They broke free? Or only after it’s done can we know?”
“No, it’s done. They are now just paying the price for it. You can take them from here if you want. I advise you do so. My children will not be pleased to see them inside this place..”
Damian nodded. Then he walked away from them, toward the enormous body of the Sun God, the spirit of the Sun God following beside him.
“You never answered my earlier question about the dungeons..” Damian said.
Stroking his beard, the Sun God said, “Yes, the dungeons. What did you ask again?”
“Why do we have them? What is the purpose of it? I assume the people from the divine realm would have something to do with it..”
“Could be. When we were at the peak of our civilization, we also searched for answers to such questions. The people wanted to know the truth of the matter..” The Sun God chuckled.
It amused Damian. “You don’t believe people should advance further? Understand the mysteries of the world?”
“The further a person comes, the easier it is for their descendants to forget what the value of life is. They forget how fragile they truly are.”
