Chapter 1710: Chapter 1807: Demon Beast Heads North

“This is…” The middle-aged man’s face was overtaken by shock. The way those beasts had died was far too horrifying; their bodies had silently withered away, as if some force had drained them of their flesh, blood, and vitality.

“Could it be this gray mist?” The middle-aged man suddenly grew alert, his expression grim beyond words.

The speed at which the gray mist spread wasn’t rapid, but it approached the city incessantly. In less than four hours, it would likely reach and engulf the entire city.

“City…City Lord! It seems those beasts all died because of this gray mist,” one of the soldiers by his side stammered, their voices trembling with fear as everyone turned their anxious eyes to the middle-aged man, awaiting his decision.

His mind in turmoil, the middle-aged man hesitated briefly before flying out of the city, heading straight for the dense forest. He needed to see for himself—what exactly was behind this sinister mist? It couldn’t have appeared without reason; surely, something in that forest was the source of this calamity.

Though he was well aware of the dangers, he took the risk anyway. As a Heavenly Origin Martial Artist, he relied on his ability to fly to quickly survey the situation, believing it unlikely that he would encounter something too perilous.

But less than the time it takes for one incense stick to burn after entering the forest, the middle-aged man returned deathly pale, fleeing for his life.

“Everyone in the city, evacuate immediately! Head south! Hurry!” Before even re-entering the city, his panicked shout echoed urgently, filled with dread.

In an instant, the city descended into chaos. People fled in every direction, and even the soldiers were no exception, all rushing to escape.

The middle-aged man was the last to leave. He paused briefly, casting one final look at the city he had guarded for less than a year. With a silent sigh, he turned and fled south without looking back.

In the depths of the forest, he had glimpsed a grotesque creature creeping across the ground. Just the sight of the Demon Beast nearly scared the courage out of him. He didn’t dare linger, immediately retreating to the city and issuing the evacuation order.

In hindsight, the middle-aged man’s decisiveness and wisdom had saved countless lives, sparing the city’s inhabitants from certain death.

Less than an hour after the last person fled the city, the gray mist consumed it entirely. The hideous Demon Beast entered the empty city, only to find nothing. Enraged, it unleashed more gray mist from its maw. Ten vine-like arms flailed wildly, reducing the city to ruins.

For this Demon Beast, destroying a city was as effortless as breathing—an all-too-simple task.

Heading south, the creature—awakened from the valley by the Green Robe Guest—devoured the life force of every being in its path. Whether members of the Human Clan, Demon Beasts, birds in the sky, or fish in the rivers, none were spared. Wherever it passed, all turned to lifeless emptiness. No living thing remained, merely fuel for its insatiable power.

Fortunately, the Demon Beast’s movements were not particularly fast. This afforded the towns and cities in its path enough warning to evacuate. As a result, heavy casualties were avoided, and most people managed to escape before its arrival.

Even so, the emergence of the Demon Beast plunged the Yun Country into crisis. The Yuan Country, which had barely begun to recover, now faced the prospect of further devastation. Upon hearing of the Demon Beast, the Yun Emperor was consumed with dread.

In the newly built Cloud Capital Palace, the Yun Emperor sat with a troubled expression, surrounded by uneasy ministers.

“Your Majesty, the Demon Beast has already passed Hundred Flower City and is now heading in the direction of Horizontal Mountain City,” a court official reported the beast’s latest movements.

The relatively young Yun Emperor, upon hearing this update, could no longer sit still. The gathered ministers exchanged worried glances, many of them looking deeply unsettled.

“After Horizontal Mountain City, it will reach Ancient Forest City and Han Yang City. If no one stops that creature and it continues southward, once it passes Han Yang City, it will be dangerously close to Cloud Capital itself,” the Yun Emperor said grimly, scanning the room.

“Your Majesty, the Demon Beast’s power is truly terrifying. A group of martial artists gathered in Mulberry Sun City, hoping to resist it. Yet they were completely slaughtered, unable to impede its advance even slightly,” a burly minister clad in armor declared.

“Are we to simply let it rampage and retreat south once more?” the Yun Emperor exclaimed angrily.

No one dared to respond. The Demon Beast had appeared so suddenly, and its power exceeded all expectations. With the Yun Country’s current resources, attempting to confront it was nothing short of a doomed endeavor.

Unless the creature changed direction on its own, if it continued south, everyone in the capital would have no choice but to flee as well.

“Prepare for the worst,” an elder minister advised solemnly.

Slumping back into his throne, the Yun Emperor pondered deeply, finally nodding and dismissing the court.

····

Meanwhile, as the nation braced for catastrophe and frantically prepared for evacuation, the unexpected happened: the Demon Beast veered eastward.

Though the east was still dotted with Yun Country’s cities, the shift in direction spared the capital from immediate destruction, granting its inhabitants a semblance of relief.

Soon, however, a cascade of terrible news arrived. Both the speed of the gray mist’s spread and the Demon Beast’s movement had suddenly doubled. A city to the east was consumed before most of its residents could escape. Those left behind were annihilated within its walls.

The slaughter and devastation continued relentlessly. The more populated an area, the more it attracted the Demon Beast. Over half the Yun Country’s cities had been reduced to desolation, and in the wake of the gray mist’s passage, not a single living being remained. Only desiccated corpses littered the land, lost amidst the ever-lingering mist of terror.

Faced with such calamity, the neighboring Qian Country and Meng Kingdom, as members of the Lower Three Kingdoms, took note of the impending danger. They swiftly began evacuating their cities, fearing the creature might cross into their borders.

Yet, after slaughtering countless lives, the Demon Beast ceased advancing south or eastward, nor did it turn west.

Instead, it chose to retrace its steps—heading north!

For the beleaguered Yun Country, this was a profound relief. Qian Country and Meng Kingdom, too, breathed easier.

They all fervently hoped the creature would continue heading north, never to return.

As it moved northward, the endless gray mist followed in its wake. Though the northern regions were sparsely populated, they teemed with Demon Beasts, more than enough to sustain the creature.

If it continued far enough north, it would reach the Extreme North Land.

And there, amidst the uncharted desolation, lay the Sky Swallowing Palace!
