Chapter 810: Banter
“The fight against the Demon King is in four days, Dumpy. The horned maniac is my problem, but until I take him down, I need you to hold back that overgrown lizard.” Leo said, as the moment the initial pleasantries were over, he cut straight to the chase without wasting any more time.
However, as he spoke that sentence, Ben, who had been casually sipping on a health potion, nearly choked, spitting out his drink, as he looked at Leo in shock.
“What? You’re fighting the Demon King in four days? When did you decide to do this? And have you absolutely lost your mind?!”
His shock was palpable. The sheer absurdity of what Leo had just announced sent his old bones trembling—not with fear, but with sheer frustration.
Ben was the only one Leo kept out of the loop on his intentions to fight the Demon King, as he knew that the old man would never approve of the idea.
Ben had grown up with fear and reverence against the Demon King ingrained in his bones and hence, Leo knew that he would never approve of such a fight, which was why he deliberately hid the news from him.
However, knowing how he could no longer hide the news anymore, Leo waved his hand dismissively, as he tried to downplay the significance of the fight.
“It’s a whole thing, Master. If I win, I annex the Demon-Kind into the Unity Empire, unify the whole continent under my rule. You know, the usual.”
Ben’s left eye twitched. “The usual?”“It’s the way to attain long-lasting peace,” Leo continued, completely ignoring his master’s growing exasperation.
“And what if you lose?” Ben asked, his voice cracking, as Leo simply shrugged in response.
“Well, if I lose… the humans are toast, so let’s hope I don’t.” He replied with an innocent smile, as Ben resisted the urge to slap him hard.
For a solid two seconds, Ben stared at him in absolute silence, contemplating his entire life’s decisions—especially the one where he took Leo in as his disciple.
Then, as he felt his anger rise, he felt a headache forming in his brain, as he finally began to vent in-order to not pop a vein.
“Stupid… I’ve raised a stupid disciple.”
Ben clutched his head in despair, his voice cracking under the sheer weight of the situation. “Oh my god, I got blinded by his talents and forgot to impart onto him lessons of common sense.”
He took a deep breath, then another, then another—but it wasn’t working.
“And to make matters worse, the fool is stronger than me now, and I can’t even hit him because he’s all grown up!” Ben said, as instead of being affected by the breakdown, Leo beamed at the compliment, seemingly unfazed by everything else his master said.
“I think you’re overreacting, Master. It’s just a fight against a strong opponent. Nothing I can’t handle. After all—”
He flexed.
“I am the strongest.”
Leo declared, as at this moment, Dumpy, sensing the need to reinforce his master’s confidence, rumbled in agreement.
“I agree with Lord Father. We can take the Demon King and the dragon down. For me and Master together—”
He puffed out his chest proudly. “We are unstoppable!”
Ben slapped his forehead.
“DON’T!”
He pointed a trembling finger at the giant frog, his frustration boiling over.
“Don’t encourage him, you overgrown toad! If there’s one person I trust less than him in battle, it’s you!”
At that moment, Ben realized something deeply unsettling.
His reckless disciple was leading an equally reckless beast into the most high-profile battle in history.
The world was doomed.
“Do you not remember when we faced the demon king previously? Do you not remember how he reduced an entire city to ashes? Do you not remember how we ran for our lives that day?” Ben asked, his tone now turning serious, as finally Leo acknowledged his concerns.
“I do remember it master, but I’m a lot stronger since then. Also, someone has to put the Demon King down eventually. And who better to do it but me?
A dozen soldiers die at the border every week. The netizens live in constant fear of being uprooted from their lands.
It’s about time someone put and end to this—” Leo replied, as he spoke with a conviction that Ben had not seen in him before.
“And what if you die?” Ben asked, his voice finally breaking completely, as he looked at Leo with watery eyes.
“I don’t care about the Empire boy as much as I do about you and the fat toad…. The Demon King and the Dragon, they’re dangerous….. and I don’t have the heart in this old age to see you hurt” Ben said, as finally he admitted what was bothering him the most.
“I–” Leo began, but paused, as he could not find the right words to reply in this situation.
Ben’s concern was genuine, and Leo did not have the heart to downplay it with a joke.
Thankfully for him though, the little frog did not have any such inhibitions, as just when the atmosphere seemed to be growing awkward, he said a dialogue so unbelievably manly, that words started to fail even Ben.
Dumpy said… “You’re right, Lord Grandfather, we may die in this fight!”
“But it takes a real man to die and then come back without dying, and luckily for myself and Lord Father, we are real men”
Dumpy declared, as he sheathed his swords and crossed his arms to hit a cool pose.
“Damn right we are!” Leo agreed, hitting the same pose, as looking at the master-disciple duo of goofballs, Ben couldn’t help but crack-up.
“Oh, what will I do with you fools? If only I could go back in time and teach you lessons in common sense instead of combat” Ben lamented, as Leo happily slung his hand over his shoulder.
“I mean, it’s more important to be strong, master, because even Emperor Julien D Evanus had common sense, but he’s dead now—” Leo countered, as once again Ben found himself to be speechless in front of his logic.
