Chapter 428: To delay or not to delay

The next day, with all of their preparations done, Michael went back to Metropolis to find their proper place where their stall would be.

According to the rulebook, any applicant would be given a designated space in the Market Plaza of Metropolis. This was a large open space where people from all sides of the territory spent their day leisurely walking by and occasionally buying some products from the stalls.

This was where new companies got tested to see if locals wanted their product or not.

Michael walked inside this plaza and realized just how large this place was. It was definitely bigger than a stadium from his previous world.

This place was teeming with greenery and natural life, just like a real park. He could see people walking through the grasses, taking picnics under the trees, and some were even leisurely riding their horses around.

This place was probably one of the most crowded places he had seen in this world, aside from his own territories.

And scattered throughout the parks were wooden stalls, some very small, and some large enough to be a cabin, built along the walkways of the plaza. Their businesses ranged from food to armories, to books. It was all very varied.

It was easy to guess that these companies were in the same boat as him; they also wanted a permit.

Wanting to find his own designated spot for his stall, he walked over towards the entrance where a man wearing the white tunic uniform of the association was standing guard.

“Excuse me. I’m supposed to get a space for my stall. Where can I put it?” he asked the employee.

The man quickly took out his scroll and asked Michael for his name.

“What’s your company?”

“Reborn,” he replied.

The man scanned through the scroll before finding Michael’s company on the list. “I have confirmed your application, sir Michael. Your designated spot will be on the spot J5, right between the pond and the large acacia tree.

I can see here that you have just submitted your application yesterday. You have the choice to start your test within a month of your application. When would you like to take it?”

Michael answered, “Right now.”

The man seemed very surprised. “Are you sure? Usually, applicants need a lot of time to set up their stall to transfer all their inventory inside Metropolis.”

“I already had it delivered before. Don’t worry,” he said to the man.

Still, the attendant was very worried for Michael. “I would suggest that you use your allotted time to delay your permit test at least a week from now.”

“Why is that?” he asked.

“The annual Upperwood District festival is about to start,” the attendant explained. “I think that you would stand to get a better chance if you let the festival pass first before you start your permit test. It would be an extreme waste for you to waste your chance because you can only apply for a permit once a year.”

Michael shrugged. “I have no idea what the Upperwood District festival is all about, but that doesn’t matter. I want to take the test today.”

Seeing as Michael had no intention of ever backing out, the attendant quickly explained so that he would understand the severity of his choice.

“The Upperwood District Festival is an event for all of the companies located in this district. This means that this entire block will be competing for people’s attention. These are companies that are already well-established in Metropolis.

And not to sound offensive, but your company is nothing compared to them. They don’t know you or what you offer. Local customers will most probably pick companies that they already know about rather than new ones they don’t know about.”

The attendant was trying to make Michael understand that getting a permit was an incredibly hard task. But trying to get a permit while the Upperwood District Festival was ongoing was an even more impossible task.

“Look around you,” said the attendant. “Do you see how many people are in this park right now? And do you see the stalls located all around? Did you notice that barely any of them are getting customers?”

Michael looked around and noticed that despite the foot traffic all around the plaza, none of them were even giving the stalls a second look. They were just passing them by as if they were nothing but stones on the grass.

“Stalls are barely getting any customers normally. And when the festival starts tomorrow, you’ll see that none of them will even have sales above what you can count with two hands.

So please heed my warning. It’s still not too late for you to change your mind. You can give yourself a better chance if you just wait another week!”

Now for any other person, they would have simply just heeded the man’s warnings. Even Michael, if it was before he reincarnated in this world, then he would have delayed his permit test for a week.

But now, Michael wasn’t willing to do that. There was a certain sense of pride within him that wasn’t going to back away from a fight. He was confident in his ability to pass the permit test. He was confident in Reborn.

And besides. If he was going to get the permit, then he would eventually be competing with those local companies anyway.

If he couldn’t even compete with them now, then he shouldn’t even try to get a permit in the first place.

Michael was just treating this as any other day. He was just going to sell his products to people who need to have their quality of life improve. The tests or the festival didn’t matter.

“Have you changed your mind?” the attendant asked.

“Yes. I changed my mind. I’ll take the permit test tomorrow.”

The attendant was left standing with his jaw dropped. This boy named Michael was actively trying to compete with the local companies of the Upperwood District! This was insane! He had never met such a daring businessman.

Meanwhile, Michael had already left to go find the J5 spot for tomorrow’s permit test.

He followed the direction given to him by the attendant, passing by the locals until he eventually found the spot that he was looking for.

And coincidentally enough, he saw that there were a few stalls that were built close to him. These stalls were small, which was a clear indication of their small companies. Yet, Michael could see from first glance that their products were made with a lot of effort, labor, and love.

“Excuse me, this is J5 spot, right?” he asked the stall owners.

There were four of them in total. And the one that Michael spoke to was a middle-aged man with balding hair who was managing a small bakery.

“Are you taking the permit too?” the old balding man asked.

Michael nodded. “Yep. I’ll start tomorrow.”

As soon as he said that, the other three stall owners got out of their buildings and went over to Michael.

“Boy…I think that you should ask the association to delay your test.”

“There’s no need for you to waste your test like us. Take it next week.”

“If they refused to delay it, tell them that I harassed you. That’ll probably get me kicked out, but I didn’t have a chance in the festival anyway. At least you’ll have a chance.”
