Rebirth: Leading Families to Survive in the Apocalypse
Chapter 177: SuspectedBehind Liang Jiuhui, Guan Hong and Xu Shi both showed some anger. Jia Kaiji, who always disregarded others, actually questioned Liang Jiuhui today in front of so many people.
However, Liang Jiuhui didn’t seem to mind. With an unchanged expression, he helped Jia Kaiji up, and said to him, “Uncle Jia, we also just arrived here. I believe those three who have been here throughout will know more.”
He then turned to Jiang Wen, who was still crying on the ground, and asked what had actually happened here.
Although still crying, Jiang Wen managed to sob out the sequence of events.
It turned out that she was startled awake this morning by the banging on the door from Jia Sheng’s room. Just as she opened the door, she was almost grabbed by Jia Sheng, who had run out and transformed into a zombie. She initially wanted to run to the second and third floors to call her teammates upstairs, but those teammates had also turned into zombies!
She had no idea what had happened or why things had turned out this way overnight!
Overnight? Yes, it must have been those two.
“It was you two, wasn’t it?!”
Jiang Wen pointed at Xia Mufei and Xia Ying and shouted angrily. It was them, holding a grudge over last night’s incident, so they committed this heinous act.
“Me? Us?”Xia Mufei, pointing at his own nose, asked in surprise—what did this have to do with them?
Xia Ying, leaning carelessly against the wall behind them, seemed utterly unaffected by Jiang Wen’s accusations.
Su Jin found it amusing—if someone like Xia Mufei were to harm others, then there would be no good people left in the world.
However, Liang Jiuhui still looked toward Xia Mufei, apparently waiting for an explanation. So, Xia Mufei felt compelled to recount last night’s conflict—which was hardly a conflict—to everyone present.
Upon hearing this, Lin Xiuyuan shook his head; he thought these people had no shame. They had kicked people who had a room out to sleep on the balcony, and last time, they even tried to steal their belongings. Surely, only those with guilty consciences would have turned out this way.
“Isn’t it because you harbored resentment towards Jia Sheng for making you sleep on the roof?”
Jiang Wen was relentless because besides these two, no one else had come into their building.
“Talk with evidence, don’t bite wildly like a dog,”
Xia Ying’s cold voice came through, and Su Jin couldn’t help glancing at him again. Was he defending Xia Mufei? She remembered that in her past life, Xia Mufei did not have such a person by his side.
“Then it was you! Since you also live here, you guys rushed over so quickly, did you know something would happen here?!”
Jiang Wen switched targets again, now suspecting Su Jin and the others. She had been surprised when she saw these people arrive as many had a grudge with their group recently, but it was these people who had materialized!
While the group was talking, Lu Hao had taken a quick look around the house, all the way to the kitchen. There he saw a sink full of unwashed dishes and a pot which, though emptied of its contents, clearly showed they had been eating porridge.
A bag of rice on the table nearby caught Lu Hao’s attention; the hole in it had been tied up with a rubber band to prevent the rice from spilling out.
Lu Hao immediately understood.
The thing that caused these people to mutate might have been due to this.
Unexpectedly, they had taken this object away.
He walked over to Jiang Wen and asked her, “Did you eat rice porridge last night?”
Jiang Wen, not knowing why Lu Hao was asking this, still nodded her head.
“Did all four of them eat it, and you didn’t?” Lu Hao continued.
“How did you know?” Jiang Wen exclaimed as if something suddenly dawned on her, her voice filled with horror, “Could it be that the porridge was poisoned?” RἁNỖΒĘș
Lu Hao nodded, picked up the bag of rice from the kitchen, threw it on the ground, and asked, “This hole, could it have been made by zombie rats or similar creatures, did you go back there that day?”
The others didn’t understand what Lu Hao meant, but Jiang Wen did. She stared in disbelief at the bag of rice and began crying uncontrollably.
That day, after their failed attempt to intercept goods outside the supermarket and seeing Su Jin and Lu Hao’s group leaving, Jia Sheng reluctantly decided to go back and see if there was anything left to take from inside.
In the end, they only found a few bags of torn rice in the storage area. At that time, the Space Element Ability User, Xiao You, questioned whether the rice was still edible given the surrounding dirtiness. It was her suggestion to collect it, telling Xiao You that although some had spilled out, the inside should still be fine, considering the current scarcity of supplies. So, Xiao You ended up collecting these bags of rice.
And last night, they had ended up eating that rice! She had gone to rest early due to exhaustion that day and had not eaten the rice porridge.
“Hahahaha…”
Having understood the situation, Jiang Wen began to laugh maniacally, “Dead, they’re all dead, hahaha.”
Lu Hao explained what had happened that day to Liang Jiuhui and the others, omitting the part about their taking everything from the supermarket.
“If you entered and found the poisoned rice, why didn’t you take it and dispose of it?!” Jia Kaiji demanded.
Su Jin and the others laughed in disbelief. So now it was also their fault for not taking those bags of rice?
From the floor, Jiang Wen found someone to blame, pointing at Su Jin and shouting, “Yes, it’s all their fault, it’s all because of them. They took everything, leaving only the poisoned rice!”
Jiang Wen’s hand trembled uncontrollably, and she didn’t know why she was shaking so much, but she finally found her scapegoats; Jia Sheng and the others didn’t die because of her — it was because of these people!
“We’ve said it many times before, there was almost nothing left when we went in, and we were only there for a short time. I’m the only Space Element Ability User in our team. Do you think I could have cleared out both floors on my own?” Guo Yang retorted vehemently.
Without evidence or witnesses, they were not about to admit they took anything.
Liang Jiuhui didn’t believe Jiang Wen’s words either. He knew Guo Yang’s Space was large, but according to his understanding of Space Element Ability Users, emptying a supermarket in such a short time truly seemed impossible.
Lu Hao crouched by Jiang Wen.
Jiang Wen didn’t understand Lu Hao’s intentions or why he was staring at her as if she were a criminal.
Lu Hao stared at Jiang Wen for a moment and then asked, “Were you caught?”
Jiang Wen’s pupils dilated instantly. How did he know?!
She had indeed been accidentally grazed on the calf by Jia Sheng, just a scratch that broke the skin, and she thought it would be fine.
Upon hearing Lu Hao’s words, everyone became alert. Liang Jiuhui’s subordinates, Guan Hong and Xu Shi, had already approached, pistols in hand.
“No, no, I didn’t bleed, just look for yourselves,” Jiang Wen protested, panicked by the dark barrels of the guns. She revealed her calf to show everyone her wound — just a scratch, surely it was fine. But her hands trembled uncontrollably, whether from fright or something else, she didn’t know.
When she exposed the wound, even she was stunned. What was happening?!
It was only a scratch before, but now it had started to rot and even smelled foul!
“I, I, I don’t want to die, wuwuwu…” Jiang Wen covered her face and began to cry.
Bang!
A gunshot echoed, and Jiang Wen collapsed against the wall, the bullet hitting her squarely in the forehead. Xu Shi put away his pistol and silently returned to stand behind Liang Jiuhui.
