For the first time, it weakened.
I felt it writhe like a worm, trying to escape me. But it was already too late. I had it in my grasp now. Slowly, methodically, I consumed its magic, unraveling the intricate energy that allowed it to exist beyond the natural laws.
The flickering blue flames dimmed.
One by one, their unnatural color faded, their supernatural properties eroding until…
*Fwoosh!*
The remaining embers were nothing more than mundane fire.
With a flick of my wrist, I snuffed them out.
[Ding!]
[Primordial entity Quinlan Elysiar has devoured foxfire! He deepened his understanding of the fire element!]
“Haaah…” An exhale left my lips. It wasn’t just the fire element I understood better… Devouring spells, huh? Now this was something I had to look into once time allowed.
I stood from my meditative pose, ready to face Veyrin.
The time for running like a rat was over.
The ground trembled as Veyrin continued his assault on my bunker.
From outside, I could hear his arrows striking against the thick layers of earth and stone, but my constructs held strong. As I had predicted, raw destruction was Veyrin’s weakest asset. He didn’t have the sheer firepower to break through before I was ready.
I concentrated my attention on the ground beneath my feet, sending a pulse of mana deep beneath the arena floor. Instead of emerging from my bunker to face him head-on, I willed the earth around me to shift, creating a passage that led underneath the battlefield. The ground swallowed me whole as I burrowed through the earth, moving unseen beneath the chaos.
Veyrin had no idea.
By the time I surfaced on the other side of the arena, he was still in the air. [Foxfire Ascent] had kept him aloft, making him a near-impossible target for anyone who couldn’t match his speed or reach his altitude.
Unfortunately for him, I could do both.
I gathered wind at my fingertips, shaping it into a razor-sharp projectile. Instead of letting it go immediately, I let it charge-up. The result of my decision was a ball of wind energy that oozed badly-contained ferocity, ready to slice my enemy apart.
Then, I let it loose.
A howling boom echoed through the stadium as my charged spell tore through the air at blinding speeds. Veyrin barely had time to react. His eyes widened, and he once again showcased his talent and experience when his body shifted instinctively, but…
It was all too late for him.
The wind blast struck directly into Veyrin’s side, carving a deep wound into his torso.
A gasp of agony burst from his lips as blood sprayed through the air.
The beastkin audience erupted in shouts of shock and disbelief. Some of in the audience who had more acute senses already saw me emerge on the other side, but even though they might’ve reacted, Veyrin wasn’t informed, thanks to the artifact present in the arena that separated the adudience stands from the arena. When a fight was going on, the two sides couldn’t hear the other. This restriction was only lifted before and after the fights.
“He actually hit him!!”
The mighty Prince Veyrin, struck so suddenly, so cleanly, it was unthinkable for these people. Especially because it happened by a young human warrior who was as good as done in their eyes.
“Veyrin’s wounded!”
“That attack was faster than my eyes could follow!”
Veyrin coughed in pain while clutching his side. His breath came in horrid wheezes as some of his organs were ruined. Instead of trying to return the favor, he used his flight ability to run away from me and recover, evidenced by him reaching for a healing potion.
But I wasn’t keen on giving him the chance to do so. Just how he mercilessly hunted me beforehand, I would give this warrior the respect he deserved by not looking down on him and giving my all.
With a surge of wind manipulation, I too took to the skies.
A rush of air propelled me forward at breakneck speed, closing the distance between us in an instant. Veyrin looked up just as I barreled toward him, his amber eyes flashing with realization.
I outstretched my left hand with my fingers spreading wide, focusing entirely on the foxfire that kept him afloat.
Then, once I had grasped onto his magic with mine, my hands clenched into a ball of fist, mimicking my intent.
The flames went out.
Veyrin’s eyes widened in sheer panic as his body suddenly dropped, plummeting from the sky like a broken arrow.
“HE SURRENDERS!!”
Silver’s voice rang out across the stadium, his tone was filled with desperation as he jumped to his feet. My hearing his voice could only mean one thing. Vargis had removed the sound barrier.
Nonetheless…
“I surre-!”
Veyrin’s mouth opened to form the same words his father had, but it was too late.
I descended on him like a bird of prey would on a defenseless rabbit.
“Thank you for being the perfect stepping stone, Prince Veyrin.”
Using wind manipulation, I added bonus force to my right arm, propelling it forward faster and stronger I’d ever done before.
In this manner, I slashed.
It was a single stroke, quicker than even my eyes could track.
For a moment, the world stood still.
Then…
Blood sprayed.
Veyrin’s head separated from his shoulders and soon, his lifeless body crashed into the arena floor unceremoniously.
[Ding!]
[You’ve slain Veyrin Inazuki! You’ve gained 100,000 XP!]
I landed beside the corpse. My ghostly saber gleamed with a new color, it was soaked in royal blood.
Aiming the blade at his head, I intoned:
“[Eternal Damnation].”
A dark glow pulsed from my weapon as Veyrin’s soul was ripped from his body, its essence drawn into the blade.
The arena fell into muted silence.
I exhaled, raising my saber, examining it intently.
Then, with a cold tone, I whispered under my breath:
“Letting a combatant of your caliber rot in service to a man like your father… would be a waste. I have far better use for you. “
Capture the souls of 1,000 level 20+ entities 203/1000
Capture the souls of 50 level 30+ entities. 34/50
Capture the souls of 1 level 40+ entity. 0/1 -> 1/1
Just as I was observing my status window, Silver’s roar of fury shattered the silence. His powerful legs coiled, and in an instant, he lunged toward me.
