Mount Lanakila is a snow peak that towers high above the clouds. It is also the most famous snowy mountain in Alola. Such a natural wonder is difficult to put into words. When Terrance looked at it, he couldn’t help but feel how insignificant human power was in comparison.
“Our luck is pretty good; it won’t snow for the next two days.”
Early the next morning, Master Victor brought Terrance here. They planned to stay until the Ice Vulpix hatched. It wasn’t that the hatching environment was truly so strict, but for thousands of years, most Alolan Ninetales had hatched and grown on snowy mountains. Master Victor had an almost fanatical obsession with this return-to-nature hatching method, to the extent that he had even published several papers discussing how this approach benefited the growth of newborn Pokémon.
If it were any other Trainer or even a Breeder, they probably wouldn’t be this rigid. But then again, Master Victor was the one researching this field.
This was only the foot of the snowy mountain.
When they arrived at Mount Lanakila, Terrance noticed that the area wasn’t desolate. Passersby, tourists, and Trainers were everywhere.
“Let’s go.”
Master Victor took a deep breath, and Terrance nodded. Their goal was the upper level of the snowy mountain—they had no intention of lingering at the foot.
…
…Fiore Region is a small region located relatively close to the Sinnoh Region. In the Fiore Region, Poké Balls are neither sold nor used. People here often have Pokémon follow them and take care of them directly.
Because of this, there is no Pokémon League in the Fiore Region. Although in some ways it is similar to the Alola Region, it is way more behind in civilization and contact with the League.
Not far to the north of the Fiore Region lies a completely isolated island. The sea currents around the island are extremely chaotic, making it difficult to reach by boat. It can only be accessed using flying means.
Beneath the thin layer of clouds, a black dot grew larger and larger. It was a ferocious-looking Pokémon. Its entire body was gray, with hints of purple on its wings. Its four sharp claws tore through the air as it flew, while its eyes exuded an imperious gaze, looking down at the island below.
Aerodactyl, a ferocious Pokémon from ancient times, possesses saw-like teeth capable of tearing out an opponent’s throat. As a typical carnivorous Pokémon, it was the undisputed ruler of the skies during its era!
“Nightmare Island… I’ve returned.”
A voice came from Aerodactyl’s back. It turned out that two humans were riding on Aerodactyl. Despite its violent nature, the Aerodactyl not only willingly allowed the two to ride it, but its eyes also revealed a wave of emotion—one called reverence.
When Aerodactyl approached the island, the two people jumped off its back, calmly sensing the chilling aura emanating from within the island.
The pair consisted of a man and a woman. The man appeared older, around sixteen or seventeen years old. His complexion was very fair, but for some reason, his face showed an unhealthy pallor.
The woman had long black hair draped over her shoulders. Though she wasn’t very old and her face still looked somewhat youthful, her entire demeanor radiated an unapproachable air, making her seem cold and distant.
“Fujiki, look, there’s no one left on this island anymore,” the man said with a bright smile. He stretched lazily before returning Aerodactyl to its Poké Ball.
The woman named Fujiki cast him a faint glance and said, “Don’t waste time.”
“Alright, alright. But let me just say this in advance—we’re still no match for it. This time, we’re just here to check on its condition. I’ve also recently received news about two Trainers who have fairly strong Altaria. After this, we’ll go see them first.”
“Okay.”
He shook his head awkwardly and muttered to himself, “I’m the hero who single-handedly destroyed Team Nightmare and rescued you all. The least you could do is pay me a little more attention.”
“You’d better conserve your energy,” Fujiki said angrily.
“Yeah, yeah, I got it. You’re so naggy.”
This island was called Nightmare Island. It was a desolate and barren place with scarce resources, rarely visited by anyone.
Ordinary people would never travel so far just to visit this godforsaken island. However, the two who descended from Aerodactyl began casually surveying their surroundings as if they were the owners of this place the moment they set foot on the island.
“Lucario!”
Finally, with a soft call from the man, a humanoid Pokémon appeared by his side.
“To keep unrelated Pokémon from causing trouble, let’s give them a bit of a warning.”
The humanoid Pokémon had a calm expression, and its aura was completely concealed, giving off an impression of absolute stillness.
It wasn’t until it heard the man’s command that it slowly focused its attention, raising its hand to its chest, no longer appearing as if it were still.
Fujiki seemed accustomed to their actions. The man placed his hand on the back of Lucario’s hand, and both the human and the Pokémon closed their eyes.
Immediately after, a blue, seemingly transparent wave rippled outward, and the entire island’s topography appeared in the minds of Lucario and the man.
“The power of Aura…”
Fujiki murmured softly. In the next moment, starting from their location, a powerful undulation swept out instantly. The leaves on the nearby trees rustled and floated down and the Pokémon resting and hunting in the surroundings, sensing this energy, all seemed to have seen something terrifying, hastily fleeing the area and hiding in what they considered to be a safe place!
“Alright, this should keep any unwanted Pokémon from running out,” the man said as he opened his eyes, as though he had done something trivial.
“You…” Fujiki initially wanted to say something, but as soon as she started speaking, she dismissed the idea of advising him. Leaving him behind, she began walking toward the inner part of the island.
“Hey!! Wait for me!”
The few years spent surviving on Nightmare Island, which felt like raising venomous creatures in a cauldron, left Fujiki most terrified not by Pokémon attacks, betrayal by companions, food shortage, or endless loneliness, but by the relentless nightmares that had plagued her for the past few years.
She had dreamed of being struck in the head by a boulder, with blood pouring down her face.
She had dreamed of strange, soul-penetrating noises that never ceased, constantly ringing in her ears.
She had dreamed of her trachea being blocked, struggling to breathe, and suffocating to death.
She had dreamed of being chased by a shadow, feeling immense fear, unable to scream, unable to run, waking up terrified, drenched in sweat, and with her heart racing.
She had dreamed of falling from a great height, but always waking up before hitting the ground…
Burning, drowning, electrocution, poisoning—countless nightmares accompanied the nights of most people from the Nightmare Island. For them, sleep had become so unfamiliar that they barely understood its meaning.
When they arrived outside a cave, the two stopped walking.
“Its condition… is still the same,” the man said. Both he and Fujiki felt like they had fallen into an icy abyss, surrounded by endless illusions. The horrors they had seen in their dreams seemed to reappear one by one before their eyes. They hadn’t even stepped into the Pokémon’s territory yet and had already retreated.
“With my current strength alongside Lucario, we’re still not strong enough to capture it. Even though my other Pokémon have improved, they’re still a level below. Forcing them into battle wouldn’t help and would only distract Lucario.”
“We can only use the first method.”
Fujiki nodded. She looked at the bracelet on her hand, embedded with a stone, and the other stone in her hand, saying, “Will it really work?”
“Maybe… If we still gain nothing this time….then we’re in big trouble.”
