It was a Pokémon with a pink head and a black body that looked like a fluffy teddy bear.
Terrance and Soliera had already reached the middle of the forest when they saw a Pokémon they had never seen before poking its head out from behind the bushes, leaving them both stunned.
“There’s no information.”
Soliera took out her Pokédex, suddenly realizing that her Pokédex didn’t include data on Pokémon from the Alola region.
“This is Bewear, a Normal/Fighting-type Pokémon.”
Terrance said; this was all he knew about it.
“It seems like it’s greeting us. So cute~,” Soliera said.
“Indeed. I didn’t expect a Pokémon from Alola to be so friendly,” Although he felt that Bewear’s behaviour was a bit odd, he didn’t think much about it.
At this moment, Bewear was waving both arms in a friendly manner toward them. Seeing this, Soliera stepped forward, wanting to touch Bewear.
Thud! Bang!“Kiiii—!” A sharp, ear-piercing scream followed as Bewear suddenly became enraged and smashed a nearby rock to pieces.
In an instant, Soliera and Terrance’s expressions froze. They took a step back, quickly placing their hands on their Poké Balls.
“It doesn’t seem… like a friendly Pokémon,” Terrance said.
“It’s fine. Friendly or not, just leave it to me,” Soliera said confidently as she took out a Poké Ball. But before she could throw it, someone shouted, “Stop!”
The person seemed to have also come from the beach just now. Seeing Terrance and Soliera about to fight Bewear, he anxiously said, “Don’t worry, let’s step back a bit. This Bewear’s temperament is actually pretty good. As long as you don’t push it, it won’t attack.”
Though neither Terrance nor Soliera felt any real threat from a wild Pokémon, they still followed his advice and retreated. Sure enough, once Bewear saw them backing away, it calmly returned to the bushes.
“I’m the clerk of Malasada Shop. You two are pretty unlucky; it’s rare for Bewear to wander over to this path.”
“Uncle, what’s the deal with this Pokémon?” Soliera was still puzzled.
Terrance also had some doubts… He didn’t know much about Alola’s Pokémon.
The clerk laughed and said, “You’re not locals, are you? In the Alola region, Bewear is considered a dangerous Pokémon. I believe there’s a warning sign along this path. You must not have noticed it, right?”
“It’s a good thing that the Bewear frequently wandering around here doesn’t have too bad of a temperament. Otherwise, it might have actively attacked you, and then you’d have no choice but to run for your lives.”
The shop clerk sighed helplessly.
“So that’s how it is.” Terrance was speechless. It seemed he’d have to find time to brush up on his knowledge of Alola’s Pokémon. This time, they had been deceived by outward appearance.
“…” Soliera remained silent. Thinking about her earlier action of approaching it, she suddenly felt a wave of fear. If that palm had landed on her…
“Hehe, come on. You’re heading to Malie City, right? I’ll take you there.”
The uncle chuckled and began leading the way. It seemed he was also heading back to Malie City. Naturally, during the journey, Soliera didn’t stay idle and kept asking the him questions about the Island Challenge. ꞦАΝȮᛒÈs
“You want to participate in the Island Challenge? That’s not an easy thing to do. When I was young, I couldn’t even qualify. Those who barely qualified failed almost immediately, hahaha,” the uncle said, scratching his head.
“Don’t underestimate me. I’m a very strong Trainer,” Soliera said confidently.
“You just need to get the Island Challenge Amulet from the Island Kahuna. However, on Ula’ula Island, if you want to obtain the Island Challenge Amulet…”
As the three of them walked, the clerk led them to a large tree. On the tree, there was a piece of… a flyer pasted, or at least that’s what Terrance thought.
“Looking for the Sparkling Stone, reward money…”
“What is a Sparkling Stone?” Soliera asked.
“It’s a type of stone. The condition for obtaining the Island Challenge Amulet on Ula’ula Island. Only those who possess an Island Challenge Amulet can participate in the Island Challenge.”
“Each Island Kahuna sets their own conditions. For example, Hala, the kahuna of Melemele Island, believes that only strong individuals should receive the Island Challenge Amulet. The weak are unworthy of such a heavy responsibility. That’s why no suitable candidate has been chosen there in recent years, and the Island Challenge hasn’t been held.”
“Compared to gaining Island Kahuna Hala’s approval, the conditions set by our Ula’ula Island Kahuna, Nanu, are much clearer.”
The shop clerk explained.
“A type of stone?” Terrance was surprised. Was it an Evolutionary Stone, or some kind of special treasure?
“However, even if you manage to get a Sparkling Stone, don’t get too excited just yet. While it can be exchanged for an Island Challenge Amulet, which grants you the right to participate in the Island Challenge, if you fail the challenge, you won’t be getting it back.”
“What a strange rite of passage…”
The person who posted the flyer on the tree offering a reward for the Sparkling Stone turned out to be Nanu, the kahuna of Ula’ula Island. Although Terrance didn’t currently know what a Sparkling Stone was, now that he had heard about it, he figured it wouldn’t take long for him to figure it out.
“Alright, alright, we’ve wasted enough time. Let’s get moving,” the shop clerk said.
Malie City is located in the northeastern part of Ula’ula Island and is the largest city on the island. The local architectural style leans toward an Eastern aesthetic, with an abundance of bamboo adding to its oriental charm. Additionally, near the city center is Malie Garden, built in the style of the Johto region.
When Terrance stepped into Malie City, he found that the local infrastructure was very well-developed. In addition, he noticed police officers patrolling the streets.
“That old man mentioned earlier that there’s a place here called Malie Library. If I have time, I should check it out. Maybe I can learn more about Alola,” Terrance thought.
Eventually, Terrance and Soliera parted ways. He had to go look for Master Victor, while she continued gathering information about the Island Challenge. It seemed that obtaining the qualifications for the Island Challenge on Ula’ula Island wasn’t easy. The little girl wore a troubled expression, contemplating whether she should try her luck on the other two islands besides Melemele Island and Ula’ula Island to see what their conditions for the Island Challenge were.
“Good luck,” Terrance said while parting. With that, he walked away, leaving Soliera gazing after him with a helpless look.
…
…
“Master Victor!!”
Terrance knocked on the door.
Soon after, an energetic elderly man came out of the room. He appeared to be in his sixties. His light brown hair was well-maintained, though his beard was already graying.
It had been nearly four years since Terrance and Master Victor had last met. However, Master Victor had always kept an eye on Terrance’s progress—from his time at the academy to his Pokémon Contests, graduation, and his Gym application. To Master Victor, Terrance’s journey of growth was no secret.
