Chapter 1556: Chapter 1553 Scheming
When some of the townspeople heard this, they immediately turned around and left, eager to rush over. Such arguments occur daily in the capital, and there’s really no advantage to them.
“Hey, I haven’t mentioned that there’s a daily limit; they’re probably all sold out by now…”
Unfortunately, this kind reminder was unheard by those involved. Many newly informed townsfolk hurried to Yonghe’s Ready-made Clothing Shop, fearing they would be too late if they didn’t go soon.
Ye Muyu watched the man from start to finish.
Although somewhat surprised by the help from so many townspeople, she knew in her heart that most were inherently simple. A cotton coat can save someone, so why wouldn’t she make it? The facts proved she had not erred.
The man, however, did not show any sign of panic or anger; instead, he sneered and said sarcastically, “You bunch of fools have all been deceived! Yonghe’s Ready-made Clothing Shop sells cotton coats at such low prices as part of a ploy. They’re clearly snatching cotton from the townspeople under the guise of seeking popularity and gratitude.”
“What makes you say that?”
The man spoke indignantly: “My family is from Apricot Flower Village. The whole village was deceived by the honorable-looking shopkeeper of Yonghe Workshop. The cotton was snatched away, and I came here just to reclaim it. If not deeply affected, why would I come seeking hardship?”
“Is it true or false? Could Yonghe really be snatching cotton secretly?” Someone dared not mention Yonghe openly and whispered in suspicion.
Seeing some hesitated, the man pointed to the sky and declared, “I swear, if I speak falsely, let heaven strike me with five bolts of lightning.”
The ancients always revered the gods and Buddhas, and the man dared to make such a venomous oath. Many superstitious individuals were largely swayed.
Ye Muyu finally spoke, smiling slightly, “I am the owner behind Yonghe Workshop. You say we sent people to deceive you out of cotton, so I ask, do you remember what those people looked like?”
“Of course, I remember.” A glimmer appeared in the man’s eyes, clearly satisfied that Ye Muyu had willingly stepped forward.
Chu Heng’s gaze was icy. Although worried for Ah Yu, witnessing her confident aura, he restrained himself from intervening.
“Very well, depict those individuals. I conduct myself openly; to prevent claims of coercion in prison, let’s have you describe them here, invite an artist to sketch them, and have you sign off with so many townspeople as witnesses. No one can deceive hundreds of eyes, would you say?”
The man’s eyes flickered, then he stiffened his neck and said, “Of course.”
Shortly thereafter, the artist arrived. As the man described, the artist complemented the depiction. Yet, the man seemed evasive, occasionally altering details, making the artist quite bewildered, as if he was speaking nonsense.
Though puzzled internally, the artist said nothing.
Instead, Ye Muyu casually reminded him, “If you keep delaying, the ‘witnesses’ around might have matters to attend to; soon, they will all leave.”
The man broke into cold sweat; his intent was indeed to stall. Knowing that delivering character sketches could serve as solid evidence held by the opposition, who could foresee what blunders might occur.
“Alright, it’s done.” The man finally confirmed the sketches.
Ye Muyu said, “Then you may sign and fingerprint them.”
The man gritted his teeth, pressed his fingerprint on the documents, and instinctively glanced around when he raised his head. Suddenly, his gaze stopped briefly, and his expression altered for a few moments.
