Chapter 88: How to start fighting
“I just want to see if you’d willingly let yourself be deceived.”
Xu Qing didn’t think it’d be that easy to steal a kiss. Even if Jiang He was silly enough to close her eyes and say, Go ahead, he’d still seriously consider whether he’d get punched in the face.
A taxi with its roof light on approached and stopped in front of them. They opened the door, got into the backseat, and relaxed a bit as they felt the warmth of the car, taking off their hats.
Jiang He kept her hands in her pockets, gently rubbing the surface of the potato with her fingers.
This potato had been washed very clean. She always carried one in her pocket and replaced it with a freshly cleaned one when it felt like it was about to spoil.
Neither of them spoke during the ride. When they got home and turned on the living room light, Jiang He finally took the potato out of her pocket, placed it on the table, and stared at it in a daze.
“Have you ever thought... what if I suddenly went back?” she asked, her eyes still fixed on the potato.
“If you went back, you’d be set. You’d grow potatoes, and as long as the credit wasn’t stolen, you’d probably go down in history and be rewarded with a title like a wealthy landlord.”
“I’m talking about you.”“Hmm?” Xu Qing, who was sitting at his computer, turned around and saw her expression. He hesitated, not knowing how to respond.
“Wouldn’t your feelings be wasted?” Jiang He asked.
Back then, he couldn’t even hold her hand, let alone anything else.
“Feelings are irrational. I can’t just stop liking you because you might leave.”
“What if I really go back?”
“You probably won’t.”
“But what if I do?”
“Alright, what if.” Xu Qing got up, nudged Winter Melon aside, and sat across from her. After a moment of thought, he said, “Let’s not dwell on how unlikely that is. Even if you really do go back, how does that conflict with me liking you?”
“Doesn’t it matter?” Jiang He wasn’t sure, but something felt off.
“Liking is liking. Love is love. Living together is living together.”
He continued, “I like you, so I want to hug and kiss you... You can say no, but if you agree, I’ll be very happy. If you suddenly disappear during this time, I’ll miss you and hope you have a good life a thousand years ago. This time we spent together would be a beautiful memory. Even twenty or thirty years later, I’d still remember you, wondering if it was all a dream or a fantasy, but I’d still be happy.”
“If you like me too, and we’re in a relationship, bonded by love, and then you suddenly vanish, I’d be heartbroken. I’d miss you constantly and might take a long time to recover. Maybe I’d never fully get over it and would have to settle for someone else... That would be painful, but I wouldn’t regret it.”
“You wouldn’t regret it?”
“Yeah.” Xu Qing nodded. “Because that’s beyond my control. I can only accept it. But if you can’t go back, and I held back my feelings just because you might leave, only to find out you’re staying—that would be the real regret.”
Jiang He frowned, staying silent.
“Live in the moment. Thinking too far ahead is pointless. No one knows if you’ll leave. Right now, I just want to hug you.” Xu Qing reached out and brushed a stray strand of hair behind her ear. “It’s fate.”
“Are you lying, or just being a scoundrel?” Jiang He didn’t move, letting him tuck her hair back.
“If you didn’t hit me, then it’s not lying. It’s called flirting.” Xu Qing picked up a little bear from beside the couch and handed it to her. “If you want to hit me, go ahead.”
“...”
Jiang He stayed quiet. After a while, she asked, “Which of your words are true, and which are lies?”
“Why ask that?”
“You’ve got me so used to your teasing that it feels normal now.” She squeezed the little bear. “Before, I definitely would’ve hit you.”
“Does it really matter if I’m lying or not?” Xu Qing asked.
“Doesn’t it matter?”
“What matters is what you want. If you don’t want it, you can still refuse, like grabbing my hand and snapping it.”
“I don’t want to grab your hand.” Jiang He shook her head. After hesitating, she added, “In fact, it feels... nice.”
“That sounds like liking.” Xu Qing thought back. “Before, when I did this, you’d blush, thinking I was teasing you. That’s a sign of liking, too. If you didn’t like me at all, you’d just feel annoyed, not embarrassed. Not being annoyed is the foundation for feelings.”
“Wasn’t that you deliberately leading me on?” Jiang He asked.
“There was some deliberate teasing, and some unintentional. We see each other every day, and since I like you, I naturally do things to make you like me more. Like grilling meat for you—I feel happy when you eat well.”
“And your ultimate goal?”
“To make you my wife.” Xu Qing stated bluntly. “When a peacock shows its feathers during courtship, it’s to attract a mate. Love works the same way. I just want you to know that I’ll treat you well.”
“You’re shameless.”
“Yep, I’m shameless.”
“You’re a scoundrel.”
“Yep, I’m a scoundrel.”
“You...” Jiang He gritted her teeth, squeezing the little bear hard. Suddenly, she leaned forward and bumped her head against Xu Qing’s chest.
“Pfft... Cough, cough!”
Xu Qing’s chest tightened from the impact, and he coughed hard. “Why... cough... did you suddenly attack me?”
“I didn’t attack you.”
Jiang He seemed like she wanted to bump him again but stopped when she saw him clutching his chest. She kept a straight face and stood up, heading to her room.
She didn’t want to actually hurt him, so one bump was enough.
“Are you washing your hair tonight? If not, I’ll just shower and sleep.” Xu Qing rubbed his chest and called after her.
Good thing she hadn’t practiced Iron Head Technique.
“No.”
With that, Jiang He closed her door.
She sat on the bed, holding the little bear. Instead of hitting it again, she just squeezed it gently.
She used to think their relationship was just one of helping and being helped. But ever since Xu Qing confessed, saying that gratitude is gratitude, and feelings are feelings, she had started re-evaluating their relationship, trying to see it from a different angle.
When Xu Qing held her hand, she kept observing him—and herself.
...Even though she didn’t want to admit it, she was now sure she wanted to stick with Xu Qing.
She just needed to be a little sillier...
Jiang He’s eyes flickered, and she rubbed the little bear’s head.
But having five children was going to be tough.
...
Xu Qing sat in the living room for a while, feeling a headache coming on. He let out a long sigh.
That was a bit reckless.
It wasn’t just Jiang He who was confused—he was, too. He needed to calm down...
If she liked him, she liked him. If not, then not. Getting bumped on the chest wasn’t exactly a clear signal.
What was this girl thinking, anyway?
