Chapter 82: You are corrupted
It felt so long.
Teaching Jiang He about the ways of the world, helping her become independent, was a painstaking process. Throughout it, there was no way he wouldn’t influence her.
Even without doing anything deliberately, she would naturally start to like him. Whether it was love or family affection, these were bonds. From the moment she crossed a thousand years to arrive here, and they met, it was a connection that couldn’t be severed.
In the words of Supreme Treasure, it was fate arranged by heaven.
“If you ever change your mind and don’t like me anymore, I’ll seriously consider your feelings and let you go,” Xu Qing promised, then added, “But that’s a matter for the future. Right now, I think we’re pretty fated.”
“I don’t like you now either!” Jiang He refused to fall into his trap.
“Do you remember what you were like when you first arrived?” Xu Qing asked. The image of Jiang He, soaked in rain, clutching a sword and huddling in the stairwell, appeared in his mind again.
So pitiful. So vulnerable.
“When I first arrived?”“You were thin and small, your hair plastered to your forehead by the rain. You pointed your sword at me and even suspected I was trying to poison you.”
As Xu Qing spoke, he glanced around, looking for the bus stop, and led her toward it. “In the first two weeks, you were smart and cautious, secretly storing food. When you realized there was always something to eat, you finally started to soak those hardened buns in water and force them down…”
“How do you know?!” Jiang He was shocked. She’d eaten in secret back then.
“Did you think I didn’t notice you taking a water bottle to the bathroom and coming out looking so satisfied?” Xu Qing shot her a look.
Anyone could guess what she’d been doing.
“I… I…”
“You even snuck out in the middle of the night to investigate and secretly searched Baidu for things you didn’t understand. Oh, and at first, you pretended you couldn’t read and took back the project plan I threw in the trash to study in your room…”
Xu Qing shook his head and laughed. “If I hadn’t looked up the ancient inscriptions from the Kaiyuan era, I’d have thought you really couldn’t read and needed a dictionary for simplified and traditional characters.”
“Didn’t I learn to read after a few days?” Jiang He said, a bit embarrassed.
“Then you suspected I had ulterior motives, that I was trying to trick you into being my girlfriend. You silently observed me to see what I was up to, didn’t you?… It wasn’t until I offered to help you level the playing field that you started to trust me. Right?”
Jiang He bowed her head and didn’t speak.
“Let’s not talk about that. You did the right thing. Even though your understanding of this world was limited, being cautious was necessary,” Xu Qing said, waving his hand to dismiss the subject. “But have you noticed that lately, you’ve become a bit… silly?”
“Silly?” Jiang He repeated reflexively.
“Yeah. When you first arrived, you were like a little hedgehog, bristling all over, ready to draw your sword at the slightest provocation. Your vigilance was maxed out. Over the next few months, you started to hide it, acting nonchalant on the surface while staying alert inside. But recently… ever since I said I liked you, you’ve been trusting everything I say.”
Xu Qing squeezed her hand gently, then mused, “I feel like if I tried to trick you into a kiss right now, it wouldn’t be hard.”
Jiang He didn’t respond. What he said made her realize it too.
She felt a wave of nervousness. Where had things gone wrong?
Noticing that she was gripping his hand tighter, Xu Qing’s hand started to hurt. But he didn’t let go and comforted her, “It’s normal, really. Women in love lose their brains, especially during their first love…”
“I’m not in love!” Jiang He retorted angrily. “You said it was about experiencing something beautiful… I don’t want to experience it anymore!”
“Fine. Admit it whenever you’re ready.”
Xu Qing stopped at the bus stop and waved his hand. “Easy there, you’re hurting me.”
Jiang He quickly loosened her grip.
“Maybe it’s not love. There’s another possibility,” he said.
“What?”
“Dependence,” Xu Qing smiled, rubbing his right hand to ease the pain. “You’ve felt insecure since you arrived, and I’m the only one who’s helped you. Living together for half a year is enough to make you let your guard down and depend on me, just like you did with Second Boss.”
“Maybe…” Jiang He muttered, conflicted.
Things were definitely different when she first arrived. Back then, even though she didn’t understand anything, she still had the calm and judgment of a swordswoman. When she encountered things she didn’t know, she found ways to figure them out.
Now, her mind was a mess.
But it wasn’t exactly as Xu Qing said. It didn’t start when he confessed; it started when she realized she felt guilty.
From Jiang He of the Yan Gang to Jiang He, the girl.
Even her iron darts had been put away. Instead of random weapons, she now carried the scarves, hats, earmuffs, and gloves that Xu Qing bought her, and spent her days hugging hand warmers and learning to play games.
“Habits can be scary, but it’s not a bad thing. Now, we can go out shopping, have some barbecue, watch a movie. Isn’t that better than risking your life for a few bites of food with a sword in hand?”
“It is.”
Jiang He nodded, gazing silently into the distance. Cars drove steadily by on the road, and pedestrians on the street looked so relaxed and carefree.
“Staying home, playing games in a warm room, cooking, going out for a nice meal, watching a movie — if that kind of life spoils us, so be it. Didn’t your people fight hard their whole lives for this?”
“Yes…” Jiang He sighed. Even a life ten times worse than this had been out of reach back then.
“So whether it’s dependence or love doesn’t matter. The key is figuring it out. Otherwise, if you stay clueless, I might just trick you into bed.”
“Trick me into bed?” Jiang He’s heart tightened.
“Yep.” Xu Qing smiled, glanced at the approaching bus, and then at her. “I’m finding myself liking you more and more. I don’t feel that way now, but if you keep being so cute, I might not be able to resist.”
“Why are you telling me this?”
Jiang He couldn’t understand. Who warned someone in advance about tricking them?
“Because I like you.”
Xu Qing shrugged. As the bus stopped in front of them, he took her hand naturally. “Let’s get on.”
He really did worry that one day, if Jiang He stayed clueless and naive, he’d give in and take advantage of her.
Tricking someone from over a thousand years ago just wasn’t right. He couldn’t bear it.
When she finally admitted she liked him, then everything would be perfect.
They sat in the back row. There were only a few people scattered across the bus. Neither of them spoke. Jiang He watched the scenery outside, lost in thought, while Xu Qing leaned back, bored and deep in his own thoughts.
“Does your hand still hurt?” she suddenly asked.
“Uh…”
Xu Qing looked down at his right hand. “Next time, be gentler.”
