Chapter 30: Crash
Prince Wang Zijun, a prominent figure from a wealthy family, was already inside the private room, wailing like a ghost. He was duet-singing “The Love of the Boatmen” with a heavily made-up girl.
“Loving each other, the ropes swing gently—has Qingzi arrived? Oh!”
When he saw Xu Qing enter with a girl in tow, Wang Zijun’s eyes lit up. He pulled the microphone away from his mouth and pointed at Xu Qing with his finger.
“Came from the village, huh? Looking pretty trendy.”
“Is it starting already?” Xu Qing glanced around. Apart from Wang Zijun, there were four guys and three girls sitting in the room, some playing on their phones, others chatting in small groups.
The guys were all familiar to him, either very close friends or acquaintances. The girls? Only one he recognized, Liu Kaijun’s girlfriend, while the others were strangers.
“Hey, we're just waiting for you—want to sing? I can help pick a song.”
“I’ll just sit for a while.”
Xu Qing led Jiang He to an empty sofa on the side. Jiang He silently scanned the room, furrowing her brows. The flashing lights above and the kaleidoscopic, magical colors from the neon signs made everyone look a little demonic. The loud background music and singing made her feel slightly uncomfortable the moment she stepped in.“Eat! You can crush this, right?” Xu Qing took a slice of watermelon from the fruit platter and bit into it. When he saw Jiang He sitting still, he grabbed a handful of nuts and handed them to her. “Eat something to fill up; more food will come soon.”
Jiang He curiously cracked open a hazelnut, looked closely at the flesh, and took a bite.
“Don’t you have these where you’re from? I remember them being around for a long time…”
The noisy room forced Xu Qing to lean in close to her ear to hear her, causing Jiang He to feel an itching sensation by her ear. She instinctively shrank her neck and shook her head. “I don’t know, I’ve never seen them.”
After a pause, noticing Xu Qing hadn’t heard her clearly, she hesitated and leaned in to repeat, “I’ve never had this, but it’s really tasty.”
Xu Qing grinned. “If it’s tasty, eat more!”
In this noisy KTV environment, no one would notice what was going on at their corner. Jiang He could crush the nuts however she liked; even if someone saw, they’d just be surprised by how strong her hands were.
People from the village, strong hands—nothing wrong with that.
“Here, Wang Zi, have a drink!” Xu Qing grabbed a beer bottle, opened it with his teeth, and raised it toward Wang Zijun, who was twisting his body to sing.
Though he couldn’t hear clearly, he could still see the action. Wang Zijun, in the middle of his song, disdainfully pointed at Xu Qing but didn’t stop singing. He twisted around, grabbed the beer, raised it in a mock toast, drank two gulps, and continued yelling into the mic.
When Jiang He looked at the beer in his hand, Xu Qing shook his head. “You can’t drink. If you get drunk, you’ll cut me down with a sword.”
“I’ve drunk before, I won’t get drunk,” Jiang He pursed her lips, wanting to try a sip.
“This beer’s not like what you’re used to. Even the ‘beer’ here is stronger than your rice wine.”
Xu Qing stuck to his rule. Girls shouldn’t drink alcohol, even if they wouldn't get drunk, it wasn’t good for them.
While thinking about how girls shouldn’t drink, Xu Qing happily chugged down half a bottle himself—double standards at play.
Seeing Jiang He still eyeing his beer, Xu Qing clicked his tongue, thought for a moment, grabbed a paper cup, carefully poured a little, and handed it to her. “Only this sip.”
Jiang He had only wanted a taste. She took the cup, shook it curiously, and then cautiously took a sip, shaking her head afterward.
“It’s not good.”
“What?” Xu Qing didn’t hear her clearly.
“… It’s not good,” Jiang He put the cup down and leaned in to speak directly into his ear.
“Yeah, it’s not supposed to be…” Xu Qing began to explain, but before he could finish...
“Hey, hey, hey! What are you two doing? It’s broad daylight, in front of everyone!”
Wang Zijun finished his song, handed the mic over to someone else, and came over. Seeing the two of them whispering, he immediately interrupted loudly.
“Are you trying to seduce each other?”
Xu Qing waved him off irritably.
“I’m not, you are,” Wang Zijun grinned, sitting down casually. He grabbed a handful of cherry tomatoes and threw them into his mouth, then looked at Jiang He and raised his chin. “Girlfriend? No introduction?”
“Just a regular friend, Jiang He. Came from the village.” Xu Qing raised his voice and then turned toward Jiang He, pointing at Wang Zijun. “This is my buddy, a true big shot, a landlord.”
“Is this how you introduce people?!” Wang Zijun spat, eyeing Jiang He closely, then clicked his tongue. “A regular friend?”
“Otherwise?”
“Then let’s be friends…”
“Go away, don’t even think about it.”
“Hey, what’s wrong with being just a regular friend?”
“You tell me. Don’t even call her a friend. Even if you don’t know her, I’d feel sorry for anyone who falls into your hands.” Xu Qing shrugged. “Don’t even think about it.”
“… Being friends with you is a waste, really, a waste.” Wang Zijun shook his head while munching on cherry tomatoes, looking at Jiang He with regret.
Such a beautiful girl, and this jerk got her.
“A waste of what? Are you taller than me?” Xu Qing glanced at him.
“….”
“Are you more handsome than me?” Xu Qing asked again.
“….”
Wang Zijun thought for a moment. “I have money.”
“Damn.”
Xu Qing leaned back lazily on the sofa, not bothered to talk anymore. He turned to glance at Jiang He, who was still nibbling on nuts, and urged, “Has it started? Everyone who’s supposed to be here should’ve arrived.”
“A few people are still missing. Don’t rush, let’s shout a bit first.” Wang Zijun stood up and pushed his way to the karaoke machine, turning back. “Which song do you want?”
“Anything.”
“Then let’s start with a cat’s meow.”
“You sing?”
“Hahaha... I’ve always wanted to hear your Cantonese version of ‘Meow Meow Meow.’” Wang Zijun’s fingers were already scrolling on the machine. “Wait until you need something from me, there’s still the rat. Damn, I still have to work tonight—does anyone still work these days?”
“Rat’s now a guardian of the people, what do you know about it, you lazy social parasite?” Xu Qing scorned, then turned back to continue whispering in Jiang He’s ear.
Bringing her to KTV wasn’t strictly necessary, but if she was going to learn to live, it was best to experience as much as possible, including modern activities like this. It was all about integration in the long run.
“I think it’s too noisy. What are we playing at here?” Jiang He looked around but still didn’t understand the purpose of all the people gathered in this strange room.
The people around them were on their phones, eating, drinking, or rolling dice.
“Sing, drink, eat—relax,” Xu Qing muttered with the ancient heroine in the corner. “Mainly, it’s because that guy’s girlfriend is having a birthday, so we’re making it lively. Everyone has different reasons for coming—some just to drink, some like singing, some like the noise, and some come to make friends… Places like this help bring people closer.”
He glanced at Jiang He, who was cracking nuts so fast it was like eating sunflower seeds. “This is useful. Help me crack a few.”
Jiang He paused for a moment but handed him a few.
“So, is this how you celebrate?”
“One way. Mainly just for fun. Haven’t seen each other for a while; eating alone is boring, so we play games or something,” Xu Qing explained. “A lot of people like singing. Can you sing?”
“I can’t.”
“Even if you could, I wouldn’t let you sing.” Xu Qing chewed on the nuts, thoroughly enjoying himself. “Wait, I’ll show you my singing skills.”
As he spoke, more people came into the room. One of them stopped when he saw Xu Qing in the corner and then glanced at Jiang He, who was quietly peeling nuts for him.
Xu Qing furrowed his brow. This guy... why is he here?
