Chapter 1374: A System Error?
The words that came from Unzoku’s mouth stirred a whirlwind of confusion in Kai’s mind. Gary was the Alpha. He was the leader of the pack. If Unzoku managed to take him out, it would surely be a massive blow to the Howlers.
If Unzoku could control Gary, he could force him to fight for him. That had been the entire reason he’d gone to him first. So why was Unzoku now claiming he was after Kai?
Was it because Kai had stayed out too late, training with the others at night? Maybe he was the easiest one to isolate. That made some sense.
But perhaps there was something deeper going on. Something Kai didn’t want to admit, not even to himself. Maybe it was his role in the group. Maybe it mattered more than he liked to believe. Not just to the Howlers, but to Gary… and even to those outside the pack.
He was the strategist. The planner. The one who helped the Howlers function at their core. Without him, things might start to fall apart.
‘It’s okay,’ Kai thought. ‘Even if I’m gone, there are so many amazing people in the Howlers. They’ll find a way to keep going. They’ll be fine without me…’
Unzoku slowly reached out his hand, raising it high above Kai’s head.
“I’m going to cause him the greatest amount of pain,” he said coldly, “for daring to defy me.”

Just outside the manor, Ice had been struck with such force that he’d been launched backward, crashing into the decorative tiles lining the property’s perimeter.
His massive body landed with a crunch, shattering a large portion of the tiled ground. The noise was loud, enough to shake the air and echo through the area.
Gary was the first one to sense it. Feeling the slight tremor beneath his feet, he rushed out and sprinted toward the source. When he arrived, his eyes widened.
“Ice… what happened? What’s wrong?” Gary crouched by his side.
And then he saw it, an enormous red imprint stamped across Ice’s stomach. A single massive footprint burned into his flesh.
“He’s here, Gary…” Ice gasped, his chest heaving with effort. “The one you’ve been worried about… Unzoku.”
Gary’s heart dropped into his stomach. Unzoku had appeared. But how? When? And more importantly, who else had been with Ice when it happened?
He tilted his head up, sniffing the air, trying to track any nearby scents, but it was no use. Whatever Unzoku had done, he’d left no trace behind.
Xin was the next one to arrive. She burst through the doorway and skidded to a stop at the sight of Ice on the ground.
“Ice is hurt? What’s going on?” she asked, already bracing herself, claws extended as she scanned the surroundings.
“Xin, get inside and alert everyone!” Gary ordered, his voice sharp. “Tell them to get out here, now. No one is to separate. And any of the werewolves, if they feel anything unusual, they are to report it immediately!”
She didn’t ask questions. Xin darted back into the manor, her voice ringing through the halls as she screamed for everyone to wake up and get moving.
It was already a delicate situation. Dealing with Unzoku, someone that powerful, wasn’t something Gary could do alone. He likely needed everyone by his side just to stand a chance.
But if Unzoku truly had some kind of power that could control werewolves, then leaving anyone behind in the manor would be dangerous. Splitting up might only make them easier to pick off. That couldn’t happen.
‘I’ll need Xin with me as well. The dragon form was able to resist Unzoku. Maybe the true Alpha form can too… Otherwise, this fight’s going to be impossible. And I only have two transformations left.’
Thankfully, Ice’s wounds were healing. He was a special type, mythical, so despite the pain and the brutal blow, he was going to survive.
From Ice, Gary learned more. Ice had been training with Apollo and Kai when it happened.
Soon, the entire group poured out from the manor, every Altered, every werewolf, every ally they had.
“No one moves more than ten meters apart from each other!” Gary shouted. “If you see or sense anything strange, report it immediately! The enemy’s already made their move, we’re searching for Kai and Apollo!”
They were a massive group, and all of them were powerful in their own ways. Still, they were facing one of the most dangerous enemies they’d ever encountered.
The group spread out, but never too far. Some were tempted to move further to expand the search range, but every time they did, Gary gave them a warning glare that made them fall back in line.
They didn’t fully understand the danger they were facing. But Gary did.
Austin had taken Ice, helping him stay upright as they followed the direction of the fight.
Eventually, they arrived at a battlefield, a place torn apart by chaos. Scorched marks, claw marks, broken earth… but no people.
“This is it,” Ice said. “This is where we fought him. Apollo and Kai should still be here!”
“I can smell them,” Olivia said, crouching low and sniffing the air. “They were definitely here. We can follow the trail and see where it leads.”
“Right…” Gary murmured.
Marie stepped forward, her expression pained. She gently rested a hand on Gary’s shoulder.
“Gary,” she said softly, “I’m just as worried as you are. Maybe more. I can’t imagine what my life would be like without Kai. Every time I think about it, my whole body starts shaking. But… he’s always had a plan. He always finds a way. He’s going to be okay.”
Gary didn’t respond right away. He just stood there, silent for a long moment. And then, finally, he said one word.
“Yeah…”
But it was a lie.
Because this time, Gary didn’t know. He didn’t know if Kai was okay or if he’d made it out of that situation alive.
Because when he checked his system screen,
Kai’s name was no longer there.
