Chapter 1042: The Storm!

Before anyone could react, the hand shot straight towards Ling Mo with a swift “whoosh.” Its speed was incredibly fast, noticeably quicker than the usual Hellforged Monsters. The others barely caught a glimpse of a Dark Shadow before hearing a sudden “thud.” “Ling-Ge!” Xia Na’s anxious shout came from the side. But at that moment, neither she nor Ye Lian and the others could spare a moment. With the abrupt appearance of this Monster, the other Hellforged Monsters seemed to go berserk, swarming towards the rooftop with increased speed.

Despite Xia Na and the others launching a frenzied attack, the Hellforged Monsters appeared indifferent to their casualties, relying on sheer numbers to pin them down.

“I’m fine!” Ling Mo quickly called out to prevent the team from losing their composure. Yet, as he spoke, he had already retreated two steps, instinctively shielding his head with one hand, his face pale as he stared at the hand he narrowly blocked.

The claw stopped just twenty centimeters from his head. Being so close, Ling Mo could even smell the metallic scent of blood trapped under its nails, along with a faint, bizarre scent… a scent from the depths of the earth…

“Phew…” Ling Mo felt a chill run down his spine. If not for his quick reflexes, he wouldn’t have dodged that attack… and failing to dodge would likely have resulted in his head being smashed by that hand…

The standoff lasted less than a fraction of a second before the claw suddenly retracted. In the blink of an eye, the Monster was crouched on the railing before Ling Mo.

“What is this…” Ling Mo’s eyes widened.

The Monster’s body was a nearly transparent, ghostly white, with numerous tentacles sprouting around its limbs, constantly writhing. Its bulging eyes were fixed unblinkingly on Ling Mo, its mouth twisted into what seemed like a sinister grin, its tongue flicking out towards him.

“Centipede Man!”

Ling Mo had expected it to be some new breed of Hellforged Monster, but instead, it was a familiar face… However, this Centipede Man felt vastly different from the ones before. In that brief moment of confrontation, Ling Mo genuinely sensed that this Monster… was indeed smiling at him…

Clearly, this one had Intelligence…

“How can this be…” Ling Mo thought rapidly, his eyes locked on the Monster with heightened vigilance.

“Ling-Ge! Look at its hand!” Black Silk suddenly shouted.

Hand? What’s wrong with the hand? We just looked at it… Ling Mo thought to himself, but he glanced at the creature’s claw again. The hand seemed larger than that of a typical Centipede Man, but beyond that, there were no other noteworthy features…

“No, no! There’s something else! It might not be a feature, but…”

The blood!

A large amount of fresh blood was smeared across its palm, with bits of flesh still lodged between its fingers. Watching it lick its lips, it wasn’t hard to imagine where the rest of the flesh had gone…

“Do you see it?” Black Silk stomped on a Hellforged Monster’s head, kicking it away while shouting, “That, that’s human blood!”

Human?!

Ling Mo was momentarily stunned, then suddenly realized!

With this, he fully understood what Black Silk meant earlier…

These monsters, they are absorbing humans… Unlike zombies who devour merely to satiate their hunger, these Hellforged Monsters can devour other creatures to optimize and transform themselves…

Just like the Ratman before, and the fully transformed survivor Tang Hao… They changed because they devoured other creatures. For these monsters, humans serve the greatest purpose in enhancing their Intelligence…

However, aside from Ling Mo’s group, the only ones in this area were the transformed survivors. They were at most half-human, so after the Centipede Man devoured their corpses, its Intelligence didn’t significantly increase. On the contrary, its body underwent a certain degree of variation. But even this small amount of Intelligence was enough for it to understand the importance of humans… and to employ basic tactics like now…

“Hoh…” The Centipede Man… or perhaps it should be called the Centipede King, gazed at Ling Mo with excitement, then suddenly stood up.

It wasn’t until it fully stood that Ling Mo realized the monster had grown to nearly two meters tall… Combined with the height of the railing, it now looked like a massive humanoid centipede… ṟãΝǒꞖƐ𝘚

“What does it want to do…” As the Centipede King stared at him, Ling Mo felt an immense pressure. It was a fear rooted in instinct, coupled with a strong survival instinct. Most importantly, if he retreated even a step here, the corner he was defending would become the first breach for the Hellforged Monsters to flood in…

This was precisely what the Centipede King intended to do… and the reason it targeted Ling Mo was due to its own greed…

“Plop!”

Saliva continuously dripped from the Centipede King’s mouth, and upon hitting the ground, it bizarrely emitted a wisp of white smoke. Ling Mo glanced at the frothy substance on the ground, feeling a wave of dread.

“Hey, hey, don’t mess with me. Did you grow up drinking sulfuric acid or something? I can tell you’re eager to eat me, but you don’t have to be this desperate… Your stomach acid is literally spilling out!”

Ling Mo muttered to himself, yet his feet showed no sign of retreat.

“Rustle!”

The Centipede King suddenly sprang into action!

It lunged forward, its tentacles unfurling, and both hands swiped at Ling Mo.

Along with its dripping saliva, streams of transparent liquid shot out from the tentacles, spraying directly toward Ling Mo.

“Whoosh!”

A seemingly invisible shield appeared in front of Ling Mo, and as the acidic liquid splattered, the two hands were already striking down on his head.

“Thud! Thud!”

Two muffled sounds echoed, and Ling Mo let out a groan, his face turning even paler.

“Thud! Thud! Thud!”

The relentless spray of acidic liquid, the dizzying barrage of high-intensity attacks… Ling Mo stood his ground, barely catching his breath. Compared to the towering Centipede King, he seemed like a fragile creature about to be crushed at any moment. The series of thuds made everyone else’s hearts race with fear…

“Damn it! They just keep coming!” Ye Kai shouted, furiously pulling the trigger.

“Ling Mo! Hang in there!” Mu Chen yelled as well.

Yuwen Xuan stopped laughing, and as he continued shooting, bursts of flame suddenly appeared.

Yet no matter how efficiently they attacked, the Hellforged Monsters kept pouring in. Forget about pushing them back temporarily; even creating a split-second gap seemed utterly impossible…

The tactics used by these Hellforged Monsters were simple, yet far more troublesome than the Zombie hordes. Their collective mobility was evidently stronger than that of the Zombies…

“Captain, let me help you…” Gu Shuangshuang set Skinny Monkey aside and quickly stood up. But just as she was about to intervene, she let out a pained gasp, clutching her head.

There… around the lone figure holding his ground, an invisible energy storm was raging…

The Centipede King’s fierce onslaught and Ling Mo’s seemingly silent yet steadfast resistance… these two opposing forces had already formed clashing whirlwinds around them…

Such a level of combat was beyond her ability to join…

“Captain…”

After a moment of heartache, Gu Shuangshuang swiftly turned and ran to the side.

“Bang! Bang! Bang!”

A series of muffled sounds erupted from the rooftop door, and Gu Shuangshuang quickly reached the entrance, her eyes tightly shut.

“Yes, this is my task… my task…”

Amidst the roaring clash of storms, the shouts of comrades, the cries of Hellforged Monsters climbing, and the chaotic noises behind the door… in such an intense environment, the sound everyone heard most clearly was still their own heartbeat.

Can we hold on… can we… survive!
