Chapter 4744: Missed
Yue’er remained silent, simply taking the pancake and nodding her head, feigning gratitude.
“Hehe, Old Shen, don’t throw things like that, you’ll scare the little beggar,” a man behind Shen Shiqi remarked, glancing at the seemingly timid child and laughing.
Hearing this, Shen Shiqi, who had already looked away, turned back. He saw the little beggar with her head bowed, not uttering a word, just nodding repeatedly. He raised his eyebrows, about to speak, when the old beggar’s joyful and grateful voice interrupted him.
“Thank you, gentlemen. My granddaughter is mute and very timid. I am thanking you on her behalf,” the old beggar said.
Mute? Yue’er’s body stiffened, but she maintained her act, huddling closer to the old beggar with her head bowed, clutching the two large cakes tightly in her hands.
“It’s okay, it’s no big deal,” Shen Shiqi replied. “By the way, have you seen a little girl around five years old? She was wearing a pink dress and looked very cute and mischievous.”
“Yes, that little girl even gave me a gold coin,” the old beggar confirmed, taking out the gold coin Yue’er had given him the previous night and holding it open in his palm.
Seeing this, Shen Shiqi and the others’ eyes lit up. They exchanged knowing glances and smiled. “I knew it! That little girl has no other choice but to take this road. I guess she wants to go back to the city.”
“Old beggar, how long ago did that little girl leave?” another person asked.
“I met her yesterday. Last night, my granddaughter and I spent the night in the woods, so I don’t know where she went,” the old beggar said, shaking his head.
“Let’s go! We’ll hurry up, and we might still be able to catch up,” Shen Shiqi declared with a smile, spurring his contract beast forward.
The group rode their beasts, kicking up a cloud of dust on the mountain road. Only after they were completely out of sight did Yue’er finally raise her head, exhale softly, and pat her chest with one hand.
“That was close,” she gasped, then looked at the old beggar. She handed him one of the flatbreads she held, a grateful smile on her face. “Old beggar, you have good reflexes! Here you go.”
The old beggar glanced at her. “Keep it for yourself!” he said. With that, he stood up, cane in hand. “Those people are not ordinary cultivators. How did you provoke them?”
“You don’t know, those guys were bored out of their minds and were just looking for trouble,” Yue’er said, glaring at him helplessly. “I didn’t provoke them; they came to provoke me. They kept following me, and it was so annoying that I had to pretend to be a beggar. They kept chasing me, and I didn’t know what they wanted.”
“Then why are you still going forward? Aren’t you afraid of running into them?” the old beggar asked.
“I have to keep going because I’m going to the city ahead,” she explained with a smile. “They won’t recognize me. They didn’t recognize me just now, did they? But I don’t think I can walk with you anymore. If you’re not in a hurry, you go to the city by yourself. I’m in a hurry to get back!”
As she spoke, she darted several meters away and waved at him. “Old beggar, goodbye. If I see you again, I’ll treat you to a big meal.” Her voice grew fainter and fainter as she quickly moved away.
The old beggar watched her leave, a faint smile appearing on his aged face, and he continued walking forward slowly.
