As twilight gave way to true night, lights illuminated every building of the vast and majestic imperial palace.

The lights climbing to the tops of the spires looked like ascending stars, and the Bariel flag hanging at their peak remained visible even in darkness.

It must be clearly visible even from outside the palace.

Thus, the fervor of the empire’s people would not cool either.

“…Queen Eripony.”

Eripony, Queen of Ruswena, stood gazing at the sight after descending from her carriage. Isn’t it truly magnificent? Since this too must be the power of mages, she could understand why Bariel had claimed the position of ‘victor’ throughout history.

“Please enter. Don’t dawdle.”

“My apologies. We have the banquet schedule.”

The official bowed awkwardly while urging her again. Though told to enter, she remained motionless, merely admiring the view.

She gestured with her head to lead the way, gathering her dress skirts. Behind Queen Eripony, the adorned Eldert and the Ruswena delegation followed in orderly fashion.

Clip-clop.

The great hall of the main palace.

She’d heard this was where major events were held, including the New Year’s celebration. The quality of decorations placed throughout and the massive arched corridors were impressive.

Just as the gradually approaching orchestra’s melody became clearer, the official stopped.

“Queen Eripony will proceed to the second floor, while the delegation, except for one close aide, will enter the central hall.”

The leaders needed to enjoy their banquet upstairs, away from miscellaneous noise. After all, each word of their conversation would determine their nations’ fates.

The delegation all bowed to see off their queen. Only Eldert would remain by the queen’s side. Silent gazes of support showered upon him as well.

Creeak.

“Am I the first guest?”

The formal dining table was lavishly decorated with flowers and candles. The official silently guided her to her seat, and Eripony frowned slightly in annoyance.

Even if it’s by order of palace entry, Clifford’s prince isn’t even king yet – is it right for him to enter after her?

Looking down at the lower floor, she saw Bariel’s officials and nobles warmly welcoming the Ruswena delegation.

“Prince Noah of Clifford has arrived.”

“Oh my, well.”

“It’s Queen Eripony.”

“Welcome, Prince Noah. It’s been a while since we last met.”

The prince appeared with Delegate May, wearing traditional Clifford attire.

Though Eripony greeted him without much thought, something about Prince Noah’s gaze seemed unusual. Taking a sip of the aperitif, she asked curiously:

“I heard you were ill – are you alright?”

“I’m surprised you heard about that. Yes, thanks to you.”

“With the palace in such commotion, private matters are easily overheard. I’m truly grateful for your praise when I’ve done nothing.”

“Well, due to the dragon reaction inspection from Ruswena, mages came personally to check my condition. So naturally, I can say it’s thanks to you.”

Prince Noah’s narrow eyes grew even narrower. Looking at it, the cause of everything that happened today was the dragon antibody anomaly reaction. If not for that, there would have been no reason for the imperial family to discover his identity.

Just as Eripony was about to respond with an incredulous expression-

“The dragon antigen-antibody anomaly reaction, we too-“

“His Majesty King Damon of Burgos has arrived.”

Creeak.

Damon’s entrance cut off the conversation.

Noah turned toward the entrance with a cold sidelong glance, while Eripony frowned at Eldert, as if asking if he knew why the prince was acting this way.

“A pleasure to meet you, Queen Eripony. And Prince Noah. This is the first time the three nations have gathered in one place.”

“Yes, indeed. Above all, I never expected to be together with Burgos like this. My father asked me to convey his regards.”

“Ah. Yes. Please give him my regards when you return.”

Burgos and Clifford, sharing a border.

As the two countries hadn’t been on good terms previously, such a meeting was truly encouraging and meaningful. They exchanged light handshakes before taking their seats.

A moment of silence passed. The three exchanged glances, confirming they all shared the same thought.

‘Prince Jin isn’t here.’

Normally, the host of the meal would arrive first, as per custom.

But Jin was Bariel’s imperial heir. While one might think it was due to the difference in status, seeing the attendants waiting outside the door made it questionable.

Eripony took a sip of her aperitif with a slight smile.

‘They said mages can eavesdrop too, but this won’t be easy.’

It was a kind of game, and a trap.

Watching what the three nations would discuss when gathered.

Knowing this, the three selectively maintained silence while waiting for Prince Jin’s entrance. Meanwhile, the orchestra’s melody grew increasingly powerful downstairs.

“His Highness Prince Jin enters!”

“Silence! His Highness the Prince enters!”

At that moment, announcements rang out simultaneously from both floors. The hall instantly fell quiet, even the melody fading as if holding its breath.

Creeak.

As the doors swung open to both sides, Jin entered with Ian. His hair was completely styled back. Eripony couldn’t help but let out a laugh.

‘The little one tried to look impressive. How cute.’

When Eldert signaled her to restrain herself, Eripony merely raised an eyebrow.

Before taking his seat at the head of the table, the child stood at the railing to look down. The vast hall was filled with people from various regions.

Whirr. Hum.

As Ian brought a magical tool closer, Jin’s voice reached everyone without difficulty.

“I thank you all for being here.”

The leaders of the three nations bowed their heads, as did the delegations below.

Ian received a glass from an attendant and placed it in Jin’s hand. The contents shimmered with a golden glow. It was one of the tribute gifts that came up from Clifford. Though closer to a beverage with no alcohol content, nothing could match its color for setting the mood.

“The three nations joining this new chapter of Bariel’s history will not be forgotten. Ruswena, Clifford, and Burgos may fully enjoy Bariel’s grace.”

As Jin raised his glass, those gathered below followed suit. The kings had no choice either. Though quite a sensitive message for a celebration, what could they do?

“Enjoy the festivities, for only those who smile shall take everything home. Let the banquet begin.”

Clink! Clang!

“We are honored, Your Highness!”

“May only glory remain! What a joyous occasion!”

“Congratulations! Hahaha!”

The sound of clinking glasses echoed throughout. Jin toasted with Ian who stood close by, while the kings of the three nations toasted among themselves and wet their lips with wine.

As Ian gestured to the orchestra below, the halted music resumed.

“It’s my first time seeing Prince Noah of Clifford. Is your condition better?”

“Ah, yes, Your Highness. Thanks to your accommodations. I’m truly grateful and apologetic.”

Noah answered while glancing at Ian. Though the prince must know he was a beast-folk, his attitude showed no special reaction. Well, that works to both their advantage.

“Let us eat.”

“Yes, Your Highness.”

At Jin’s direction, the banquet began in earnest. More quietly and cautiously than below.

Eripony was the first to break the silence. She judged it best to address the apparent misunderstanding about Ruswena regarding the dragon anomaly reaction.

“By the way, Your Highness.”

“Speak.”

Jin responded while lightly cutting his appetizer.

“Regarding the dragon anomaly reaction you mentioned. You said it started in Ruswena, but there have been no reported cases in our country. Not just us – I heard Clifford has completed their inspections as well. As you can see, there were no issues in the results.”

When the dragon anomaly reaction was mentioned, Noah and Damon’s expressions contrasted sharply. Noah showed irritation, while Damon’s face held suspicion.

Jin nodded as if this was a perfectly timely topic.

“Therefore, I humbly request discretion in hastily mentioning Ruswena, as it’s a sensitive matter.”

“We have a case of infection from someone who handled dragon scales that came from Ruswena. Given Your Majesty’s ignorance, it seems to be from an illegal breeding facility – it would be best to investigate discreetly upon your return.”

“Dragon scales themselves are illegal items. How do you know their source is Ruswena?”

“First, among neighboring countries, only Ruswena officially operates breeding facilities, and moreover, we discovered them when seizing the assets of someone you know well.”

Eripony faltered. A Bariel person she knows well? And had their assets seized? Only one person came to mind.

‘Hayman?’

Jin continued with an innocent smile.

“I truly had many doubts. But seeing as Your Majesty genuinely seems unaware, that’s quite fortunate. If there are any shortcomings in the investigation, I shall have the imperial palace dispatch an investigation team.”

…Let’s stop here first. Wasn’t Hayman’s entire family executed for treason? Having that name entangled in conversation with the prince is itself a burden for Ruswena.

Moreover, hearing that the person who left the palace due to infection was a mage, if they demand compensation, name your price. How can a mage’s value be converted to numbers?

Furthermore, offering to dispatch an investigation team means officially planting Bariel’s people in Ruswena.

“That won’t be necessary. We can handle it sufficiently on our end. I’ll order the relevant investigation as soon as I return.”

“When might I receive the good news?”

“…I shall see you again before summer.”

Jin didn’t let it slide ambiguously but set a firm deadline. It was a declaration that if there was no contact by then, Bariel would send people to Ruswena.

Watching this, Damon quietly set down his fork.

‘Something’s strange.’

They said they conducted inspections to guard against an infectious disease. But what about them? Burgos received no treatment after entering the palace. This suggests the imperial palace’s attitude toward the infectious disease isn’t as serious as expected.

Ruswena and Clifford completed their inspections. That it was an “appropriate action” only for these two countries…

‘Given Ruswena is the source country, that makes sense, but why Clifford? Why didn’t we have to, while Clifford did?’

Damon met Noah’s eyes. Though they exchanged ceremonial eye contact, Damon scrutinized Noah thoroughly. Ian’s arm smoothly entered that space. Holding a wine bottle, he wore a polite smile.

“Your glass is empty. May I offer you more?”

“Of course, Minister Hielo of the Ministry of Magic.”

“Thank you. Timothy, you as well?”

When Ian asked, Damon nodded. With permission to drink granted, Timothy approached to receive his glass.

“Your Majesty. It is truly an honor to meet you like this. Previously, hearing Timothy’s words, I’ve been waiting for a day like this.”

“Oh? What did he say? Did he complain about a lord who sent him out to work, leaving his family behind?”

“Your Majesty! What are you saying? Absolutely not!”

Timothy, who had been drinking, denied it with a startled jump. Ian laughed in agreement, but Damon didn’t easily twist his lips. From his cold expression, Ian felt something oddly intuitive.

“…Did His Majesty also hear about me from Timothy?”

Ian casually threw out the words with a shrewd smile. How about it, one living their second life? In your first life, was there an Ian Hielo like now?

Damon peered into Ian’s green eyes with cold violet ones.

“Yes. I heard.”

Ian Hielo.

“But it’s somewhat different from what I expected.”

Damon’s cryptic words. Ian pondered their meaning while taking a sip of wine and smiling. There was plenty of dining time. They could slowly unravel it, as if sinking into the wine.

***

While the kings’ banquet proceeded upstairs, among the nobles below, there was one who kept staring upward.

“Sereau. Won’t you have a drink?”

“Ah, sure.”

“No need to be intimidated even on a day like this. It’s a celebration! Everyone’s enjoying themselves.”

“I know. I am enjoying myself.”

“Then smile a bit!”

Marlon Hope Sereau, a noble who had spectacularly fallen after trying to curry favor with Ian, couldn’t take his eyes off the upper floor.
