Major League System

Chapter 1046 - 1046: Lead-up (2)

At Comerica Park, people were lining up to get into the arena hours before the game was scheduled to kick off. It had somewhat become a social event in the carpark with plenty of people cooking food and having drinks.

This was called a tailgate party, something common at sporting events like football, baseball and NASCAR racing.

Ken and Daichi caught a taxi into the venue and were waved past by the security, allowing them to skip past the numerous fans.

Usually, Ken would do his best to interact with fans, but he doubted that he’d be able to get to the field in time thanks to their sheer number today.

“They’re pretty lively today…” Ken said, getting out of the cab and stretching.

“Well its the last game of the World Series, what do you expect?” Daichi quipped, grabbing his bag.

Ken shrugged and followed suit, heading towards the tunnels.

“Afternoon Charles.” Ken nodded to the security guard, extending his fist.

“Good afternoon Ken, Daichi.” The swarthy man replied, his white teeth bared in an infectious smile as he completed the fist bump.

“You’re looking pretty happy today, did you bet your life savings on us to win or something?” Ken teased.

The older security guard laughed, “No no, my family will be in the crowd tonight thanks to you. You should have seen my grandson’s face when I told him we had tickets.”

Ken’s expression faltered for a moment, “You didn’t tell me you were a grandpa…”

Charles smiled teasingly, “You never asked.”

Ken couldn’t help but laugh at the absurdity of the response. Even if he suspected someone was old enough to be a grandparent, he wouldn’t ask them outright.

“Well, how old is your grandson? Maybe I can sign a ball for him.” Ken asked.

At this, Charles looked a little uncomfortable. He fidgeted before replying, “My grandson… He’s actually a Miami fan since he loves fish.”

“Hahahaha!” Ken burst into laughter, enjoying the uncomfortable expression on the security guard’s face.

“Alright, who is his favorite player? Ryan?”

Though Charles didn’t respond, his facial expression made it evident that he had hit the nail on the head. Ken eventually nodded in understanding and pat the guy on his shoulder, “I’ll try and get him a souvenir.”

“Y—You don’t have to do that Ken…”

However, Ken had already started walking down the tunnel. He lifted his hand without turning around, “It’s no issue,” he said, waving it off.

Even as he left, Ken was feeling amused. If anything, this small interaction had helped him ease the nerves and excitement that was causing a pit in his stomach.

“Are you really going to ask Ryan to sign a ball for his grandson?” Daichi asked curiously.

Ken shrugged, “Why not? As professional athletes, shouldn’t we aspire to be role models for kids like… Damn it, what was the kids name? I didn’t ask.”

“Derek is his name, Charles once showed me some photos on his phone.” Daichi interjected.

“Right… We should be role models for kids like Derek. At the end of the day we’re all competitive, but this is bigger than baseball. If we can inspire the next generation, then our will shall continue through them.” Ken said resolutely.

Daichi scratched his head, clearly not expecting his words. “This sounds extremely weird coming from a rookie who hasn’t even finished their first season in the league…”

Ken froze before letting out a dry chuckle. Perhaps he was acting like this because he was so close to completing the final mission of the system.

“What can I say? I’m just a baseball idiot that wants to see the game I love continue on forever…” He said, his voice trailing off.

“I guess that’s fair enough,” Daichi admitted, feeling the mood. “But if you’re going to ask Ryan to sign for something, do it before the game starts.” He suggested.

“Yeah, if I do it after we win it might seem a little rude…” Ken replied.

Of course the notion of losing this game had never entered Ken’s mind. This was because he had never been stronger right now.

The system reflected this.

With his physical fitness in the Legendary grade, paired with his 30 skills and 4 traits, Ken was essentially a god-like player.

Of course he was just a single player and baseball was a team sport, but that didn’t mean he couldn’t have a huge impact on the game, especially when he was batting and pitching.

Tonight would be one of those games.

“You ready for tonight little bro?” Ken asked after a while.

“Of course… I’ve been waiting to smash Ryan’s pitches ever since the first game.” He replied with gusto.

“Mmm, good. No holding back tonight, we need to hit them with everything we’ve got.” Ken said, patting his brother on the shoulder. “Don’t worry about my stamina, I’ll throw whatever you need to get the batter out.”

“I already know about your monstrous stamina big bro…” Daichi said, casting him a baleful glance.

Ken’s stamina was already great before his recent power up, but now it was almost unfathomable. Pitching all out for 12 innings was probably possible if he put his mind to it.

“Haha, don’t give me that look.” Ken said with a grin, “Just keep training, you’ll catch up soon enough.”

“Yeah yeah, whatever.” Daichi waved his hand dismissively before opening the door to the locker room. Upon entering, there were already a few players chatting amongst each other.

Rohan who had left earlier than them was already dressed in his gear, his leg bouncing as he sat on the bench. It was clear that he was nervous despite likely not playing this game.
