Live Streaming: Great Adventure in the Wilderness
Chapter 487: Return to the ShelterThe piercing screams echoed in Bi Fang’s ears as he closed his eyes, his body pressed tightly against the rock wall.
Only the audience could see clearly, within the smoke-filled cave entrance, a swarm of black shadows rushed out swiftly, their shrill shrieks growing closer and closer until they burst out of the cave.
Thousands of black bats formed a black storm, whirling and ascending in the dense forest, with a few even landing on the drone, giving the audience a close-up view of these sharp-fanged little creatures.
The entire sky seemed to be engulfed by the bat swarm; the black storm circled the forest for a full half minute before gradually dissipating among the trees.
Like diluted ink, it seeped into the greenery.
With the shrieking no longer by his ear, Bi Fang finally opened his eyes and let out a sigh of relief.
“Bats are actually quite timid and generally won’t attack humans,” Bi Fang said, holding a torch and entering the cave, “People fear bats mainly because of their appearance and the viruses they carry.”
“Hendra virus, Marburg virus, SARS-CoV, and rabies—bats are major hosts for all of these.”
[Aside from rabies, I don’t recognize any of these.]
[Isn’t rabies transmitted by dog bites?][Another day of being uneducated.]
“Although rabies is mainly transmitted to humans by domestic dogs, because they are more likely to sink their teeth into human flesh compared to wild animals, bats are also one of the main reservoir hosts for the rabies virus.”
As Bi Fang walked through the cave, he explained, “And don’t be fooled by the bats’ small size; their teeth are actually very sharp. Although we smoked out most of the bats, it’s still possible that a few are hiding in crannies, so we should take good precautions before entering the cave, and it’s best not to take off our clothes.”
For this reason, Bi Fang had not taken off his raincoat, to avoid being suddenly bitten by a bat.
The entrance to the cave was not small; on the contrary, it was very large, otherwise it wouldn’t have allowed a huge creature like the Wild Baizhi Ox to enter.
Perhaps due to consecutive days of rain, the cave was very humid and hot, with puddles everywhere.
A few steps in, Bi Fang avoided the puddles, reached out to touch the rock wall, and felt the rough gravelly texture with his fingertips.
He rubbed some, and applied it to the tip of his tongue.
“Ptooey!”
Bi Fang quickly spat out the grit from his mouth and rinsed his mouth.
The audience watched with eager eyes.
[How is it? How is it?]
[What does it taste like?]
[Is it salt? Is it salt?]
[Sweet or salty?]
Bi Fang stared at the camera and after a moment of silence, suddenly revealed a big smile.
“Salty!”
[Awesome!!!!]
[Master Fang is invincible, invincible!]
[Finally, we’ve found salt! Tears in a storm!]
[Long-bearded little milk bottle gifts the host Wolf Brush*10000000—Can you bring back more, I want to taste it too.]
Light golden wolf brushes fell like rain in the live broadcast room, fluttering down.
[Wow, ten million wolf brushes? Ten thousand bucks? Awesome, was this a spontaneous donation or accumulated over time?]
[Definitely spontaneous, how could you save up ten thousand for you?]
[Lord Mu gifts the host Spaceship*1—Bring back more, let’s try and see what it tastes like.]
[Catch a big donor on the rebound!]
The audience cheered and leaped for joy, seeing Bi Fang go through great lengths and take a full three days to finally find mineral salt following the Wild Baizhi Ox.]
[Finding Salt Is Too Difficult]
That was the first sensory reaction for everyone, even Bi Fang found the search for salt extremely difficult and fraught with danger, not to mention those ancient people.
No wonder salt had to be managed by the officials, seemingly inconsequential yet vital to life.
Bi Fang took out two leaves, one to scrape and the other to catch, carefully collecting the salt from the wall. Large chunks fell off, and when the veins of the catching leaf were raised, he poured them into a long, slender bamboo tube.
Having found the rare mineral salt, Bi Fang collected a lot, with the thick bamboo joints almost filled halfway. This was far more than enough for consumption.
However, Master Fang also saw the bullet comments; he indeed was thinking of bringing more back.
After collecting enough, Bi Fang walked a few steps further into the cave. Dozens of steps later, he saw a broken stalactite column that seemed to have been snapped by something.
Bi Fang joked, “Could it be the Wild Baizhi Ox, perhaps?”
The cave was entirely different from the rainforest where countless insects and birds could be heard. In the cave, there was nothing.
Utter silence.
Darkness surrounded him in every direction, and only the torch in Bi Fang’s hand provided a faint light for his feet. A turn of his body might reveal the slender tail of a lizard vanishing beneath the light of the torch, an utterly terrifying sight.
Even Bi Fang did not want to explore further. The firelight was no match for a flashlight, illuminating too small an area to feel any sense of safety.
Fortunately, a cliff halted his desire to explore further.
After progressing about fifty meters into the cave, Bi Fang encountered an abrupt drop-off. Extending the torch over the edge, he couldn’t see the bottom through the inky darkness that seemed filled with endless rolling mist.
[Hidden path ahead]
[There’s a trap ahead]
[Time to jump]
He kicked a pebble off the edge; after a long silence, it hit the ground with a crisp sound echoing through the cave.
Bi Fang was surprised, “It took about three seconds to fall; this cliff must be over forty meters high. Let’s leave, we won’t explore this time.”
Not all caves harbor all sorts of weird creatures.
Bi Fang had no desire to explore this dangerously high-risk, low-reward cave. After a brief explanation to the audience, he decided to head back the way he came.
[Aren’t we going down? There might be unknown creatures waiting to be discovered]
[Do you think unknown creatures are as common as cabbages?]
[Have you seen Journey to the Center of the Earth? Not going down? You might find dinosaurs]
Once out of the cave, the light welcomed him back vividly. Bi Fang squinted his eyes, quickly adjusting to the brightness.
“Now that we have collected a lot of salt, it’s time to return to our original shelter.”
Although they had traveled far from the shelter, Bi Fang did not want to give it up easily; he and Leonardo had spent a whole afternoon building it together.
In terms of both comfort and sturdiness, it was far superior to any makeshift personal shelter.
The goal during its construction was to make it habitable for at least a month; if Bi Fang had to do it alone, it would take at least an entire day.
Rather than that, it was better to spend a whole day returning.
“It’s around two or three in the afternoon; although it took us nearly three days to find the salt deposit due to the rain delay and following the Wild Baizhi Ox, which slowed us down, I also made clear marks along the way. If all goes well, we might be able to get back in a day.”
Bi Fang found his bark frame at the cave entrance, loosened the vine around his body, added a few more strands to tighten it, and wrapped several more turns at the position of his shoulder blades, padding it with thick leaves before he hoisted it on his back.
“Carrying the frame for a day, my shoulders really hurt, it’s so heavy. If it weren’t for the raincoat, I might have blisters on my shoulders.”
It was understandable, as the vines were inherently tough. Carrying a backpack for a day was exhausting enough, let alone an unlined primitive bark frame.
The air was somewhat stuffy and humid after the rain, and each day’s temperature felt noticeably hotter than the last.
Bi Fang wiped the sweat from his forehead and, following the markers on the trees, he moved toward the place they had started from.
“Hope it doesn’t take too long.”
