Chapter 455: Plants Also CompeteUnder the lush canopy of a large tree, two people were hanging back-to-back on the branches.
“I’m currently hanging about twenty meters up in the tree, and now we need to descend to the ground. We could use the ropes from the parachute, but that goes against the survival principles I’ve set for this trip,”
“Although parachutes and ropes would be very useful here, most people lost in the forest have nothing, so I should also go down empty-handed, which will greatly increase the difficulty of this journey. I must think of other ways to get down.”
Bi Fang looked up at the canopy, carefully unfastened his harness, and then detached himself from it.
“When you’re hung up in a tree with a parachute, don’t make any big movements that might shake it. Even though the parachute has a large surface area, it can’t guarantee 100% that you won’t fall straight down, so be careful with any movements you make.”
Leonardo stayed motionless, watching Bi Fang leave him from behind, suddenly feeling lighter, as if even his position was raised a few notches.
“At the same time, we need to be careful of the branches next to us, so they don’t scratch our eyes, and most importantly, we must always observe our surroundings.”
After detaching from his backpack, Bi Fang grabbed a nearby branch, carefully moved toward the trunk of the tree, and stepped firmly on the branch with his bare feet, toes gripping tightly.
The humid environment of the rainforest covered these branches with wet, slippery moss, and before long, the soles of Bi Fang’s feet turned pure green.
Updated by NovG○.coThe branches of the Bodhi Tree have a distinctive feature; once they reach a certain height, they expand horizontally. They don’t grow upwards but spread out like a layer of carpet, with another layer added further up, making it quite convenient to walk on.
“As I’ve said before, the ecological chain in the rainforest is very cruel. Many creatures have evolved their own unique survival or predation methods; mimetism is one of them. Sometimes what you think is a branch could possibly be a venomous snake mimicking one.”
[Eh, stop talking, I’m getting goosebumps on my hands.]
[Speaking of which, it feels like it’s been a long time since we saw the divine artifact, dog’s head.jpg]
[Come out, divine artifact!]
[Stick+9, Attack Power 210+120, no additional effects, Strength: D, Agility: C]
[Last time I went to climb Mount Everest, I upgraded to use the Super Divine Climbing Staff. Stick hasn’t made an appearance in an entire instance, losing its status as a divine artifact!]
[Just break off the Bodhi Tree, it will make a statement! By the way, isn’t this thing a protected plant?]
[If it’s a protected plant, wouldn’t that be awful? Didn’t Old Fang and Little Leo just come down and break quite a few branches? dog’s head.jpg]
“How easy do you think it is to come across protected plants?” Bi Fang laughed upon seeing the barrage of comments. The reason why protected plants are protected is because they are rare.
In such a vast forest, to land directly on protected plants; is it good luck or bad?
Stepping on the thick branches, Bi Fang quickly reached the center of the trunk. Looking down, there were visibly fewer leaves, and he could barely make out the ground.
A small drone took the opportunity to fly through the gap, filming from the bottom up, and the gloomy forest environment made everyone shiver.
Bi Fang was right; the rainforest isn’t as beautiful as people imagine but deep and shadowy.
An ill-prepared explorer entering this place would only feel horror and fear, wanting to escape instantly.
More than two-thirds of the world’s plant and animal species have been discovered in tropical rainforests. For the wildlife living here, life is undoubtedly cruel.
A frog resting might be swallowed by a venomous snake in the next second, and that venomous snake might also become snack food for a mongoose immediately afterwards.
Even plants have a desperate struggle for sunlight and dew.
“The rainforest has a unique plant canopy structure, composed of vertical layers, including the emergent layer, the canopy layer, the understory layer, the shrub layer, and the forest floor.”
“Each layer fights fiercely to take up living space, to absorb the little sunlight that filters through the trees’ fingers, with the hierarchy almost fixed. Even the seedlings of new trees hardly ever reach the height of their parents, due to lack of resources.”
The trees of the tropical rainforest are vertically divided into upper, middle, and lower layers. The canopy of the lower trees is usually below that of the middle trees. If they bear flowers and fruits on branches that last only one or two years, they can easily be overshadowed by the upper and middle layers.
Therefore, they can only choose to flower and fruit on older branches or trunks, attracting insects in this space for pollination.
Or until the largest tree in the area dies, decays, and collapses, casting sunlight inside, only then might there be a possibility for a new ruler to emerge.
“It’s about twenty meters or so,” Bi Fang said, looking down to confirm before heading back the same way. He grabbed a tree branch above him and reached out to Leonardo, “Unstrap your backpack and then come over, be careful, it’s very slippery up here.”
Leonardo nodded, feeling even more stuffy and hot in the rainforest than before, each breath felt like he was inhaling steam into his lungs, sticky and moist.
His clothes clung to his skin.
He recalled Bi Fang’s earlier movements and cautiously unbuckled his backpack straps, then, with Bi Fang’s support, stepped onto the branch. He had just got up when his feet slipped, and he almost fell.
Luckily, Bi Fang was prepared and caught him right away.
“The tree trunks in the rainforest are very wet and slippery, covered with a lot of moss. You must be careful when climbing trees. Don’t rush.”
The two arrived at the tree trunk, and Bi Fang chose a thinner one, hugging it and saying, “The Bodhi Tree’s trunk is quite special; it’s somewhat like many small trunks twisted together, so we just have to slide down one of them. Don’t worry about hurting your hands, it’s really smooth.”
Saying this, Bi Fang hugged a small trunk, pushed against it with his feet, and, under the influence of his body weight, slid down bit by bit, occasionally resting on some branches. He soon slid down from the twenty meters height.
As they descended, the sunlight quickly vanished, and the forest became even more shadowy and secluded.
The audience’s mood tensed up along with the descent.
[Claustrophobia is really the end here.]
[Got a bit of shivers]
Just before landing, Bi Fang stopped, broke off a branch full of leaves, and swept it over the ground, “The rainforest is truly rife with danger. You can see a layer of dead leaves under my feet, but hidden inside might be a venomous centipede, difficult to detect in the rainforest and you might get accidentally hurt if you startle it.”
“There might also be venomous spiders. Banna Rainforest is home to many highly poisonous spiders, but they generally come out at night, rarely during the day. If you’re wearing shoes, of course, there’s nothing to worry about. Regrettably, I am barefoot now, so I have to be extra cautious before I touch the ground.”
Only after Bi Fang swept the ground to ensure there were no hidden creatures, did he finally land, and signaled to Leonardo, still up in the tree, to come down.
With a demonstration to follow, Leonardo was more careful and safely landed as well.
Once he reached the ground, he finally breathed a sigh of relief, “Phew, you’re overly cautious; that really got me tense.”
“No choice, I’m not wearing anything, so no amount of caution is too much,” Bi Fang shrugged. If he were dressed with boots, he wouldn’t have to be so nervous; he could have jumped straight down from a two or three meters height without any problem.
But he didn’t, and although Bi Fang had the experience and abilities bestowed by the system, his body was still normal and he had not developed the adaptability for long-term survival in the rainforest.
A significant difference from the original inhabitants.
“Right now, the priority is to weave a pair of shoes for my feet so that I can walk freely in the rainforest without being endangered by insects.” Bi Fang squatted down and touched the flat ground.
“The dead leaves might hide dangers, and these sharp needle grasses can also stick into the sole of your foot. In short bursts, it’s no issue, but over time, the soles of your feet would become very rough, with tiny wounds too numerous and small to see clearly, which can easily be invaded by microbes or even parasites, like sand fleas.”
“They usually reside in the soil, feeding on the blood of warm-blooded hosts. Many natives in Africa who don’t wear shoes have extremely thick soles with many dense holes, resembling barnacles on a whale. I definitively don’t want that; it’s really disgusting, and I advise you not to search for it.”
Leonardo shrugged, “The way you put it makes them even more curious. But having seen it myself, it truly is disgusting.”
“I need to find a plant to protect my feet. Before that, we can use branches full of leaves for a makeshift bandage, just like bandaging a wound.”
Bi Fang didn’t waste the branch he had used to sweep the ground; he wrapped it around the entire sole of his foot and did the same for the other foot. Then, he began exploring the jungle with Leonardo.
The ground was covered with a mix of dead leaves and green grass, a unique phenomenon of the rainforest.
“This place has an abundance of microbes, so many that a dead body could decompose so thoroughly that in just a week, nothing would be left. In fact, the rainforest’s hot and rainy climate, along with strong surface runoff and leaching, makes the soil very poor, lacking accumulation and replenishment of nutrients.”
“The towering trees you see are due to the intense decomposition of organic matter and the recycling of nutrients, which also means that once the rainforest is destroyed, it’s very difficult for it to regrow.”
“Dead leaves and green grass, two phenomena typically of autumn and spring respectively, are able to intermingle together here.”
