Live Streaming: Great Adventure in the Wilderness
Chapter 436: The Goose Returns!Even in May, as the enduring frost of the Arctic Circle began to thaw and seep into the ground, it brought with it endless vitality.
Bi Fang and Étienne stood by the lake at noon. Even in the Arctic Circle, the weather was not cold, and they both wore only a light shirt, each holding a fishing spear in their hands, scanning the area, clearly in search of today’s lunch.
“Why do I feel like you’ve changed?” Étienne glanced at Bi Fang from time to time. He hadn’t noticed anything the night before, but looking at Bi Fang today, he sensed something was different from the live broadcast two days ago.
It was hard to pinpoint exactly what was different… Was he… handsomer?
“Maybe it’s because I’ve come down from Mount Everest and rested for two days, so I’ve gotten fairer,” Bi Fang didn’t expect Étienne to be so perceptive, and with a laugh, he quickly changed the subject.
“If you are really in the wilderness near a body of water, fishing is an excellent way to obtain high-quality protein, and compared to catching land animals, you have a higher chance of success in the water. Just make a spear, and even if you don’t have much experience, you’ll succeed after a few tries.”
Sure enough, as Bi Fang carefully explained his experience, Étienne, who had been very concerned about the change, immediately put it out of his mind and listened intently.
Since there was nothing else to do during the two days of waiting for the geese, Bi Fang simply took Étienne nearby for some hunting activities.
Originally, they were setting traps to catch small animals, but after a busy morning without much success, Bi Fang turned to try the simpler task of fishing.
“You can use nets, hooks, spears, or lassos to catch fish, or even catch them directly with your hands. If you set traps in a stream, you can carry out other work while waiting for the fish to swim into them.”“How can you catch fish with your hands?” asked Étienne curiously. Fish are strong and slippery. Wouldn’t they easily slip away if you tried to catch them by hand?
“It depends on the fish. You can use your hands for fish in smaller lakes, or for those that move sluggishly.”
Glancing around, Bi Fang spotted a palm-sized fish near a stone. To demonstrate, he handed the spear to Étienne, rolled up his sleeves and approached the fish.
Bi Fang whispered slowly, “First, pinpoint the fish’s location, then gently and smoothly approach it from underneath with both hands, one hand towards the head and the other towards the tail. When you touch the fish’s body, quickly grab it.”
Étienne’s eyes widened as he watched Bi Fang’s hands sink slowly into the water, barely causing a ripple, very steady.
The fish exchanging air in the puddle had no idea that a pair of large hands had already approached from behind, moving to encircle it from below.
Bi Fang’s motions were slow yet steady, his chest expansion almost invisible, as if he had stopped breathing.
When catching fish by hand, impatience is the last thing you need. Your breathing must be slowed down to avoid ripples because fish can detect changes in the water through their lateral lines. Usually, the slightest disturbance will send them darting away.
When Bi Fang’s left hand was behind its tail and his right hand was about to touch its head, he struck like lightning less than half a palm’s distance away, grabbing the fish firmly.
Bi Fang scooped the fish out of the water and threw it onto the shore with a moon-in-the-well gesture.
Without the water environment, the fish could only jump around on the mud, but its fate was no longer in its own fins.
“Fish are strong, and you can easily let them escape if you’re not careful, so if the water is shallow, you can just flip them onto the shore, or knock them out with a rock or a stick,” said Bi Fang. R̃ΆꞐÒᛒÊş
“Some fish like to hide in holes at the bottom, like catfish, for instance. You can reach into the hole to grab them. These fish are more aggressive and have sharp teeth that can bite, so if you’re not sure what’s in the hole, it’s not advisable to take the risk.”
Étienne asked, “Then how do you determine what kind of fish it is?”
Bi Fang straightened up, shook off the water as he moved from the water to the shore, “This really tests your fundamental knowledge. First, you need to know what common species of fish are distributed in the general latitude and longitude areas, and also determine, based on the temperature and the aquatic environment, which fish are active in the current season, as well as what are the habits of many common fish. All these test your basic skills, and you can’t learn them just by watching fishing one or two times.”
Knowledge is power, this saying is applicable everywhere, and often the more skilled a Wilderness Survival expert is, the wider range of subjects they master, and the deeper their understanding of various species.
Étienne nodded helplessly.
Bi Fang picked up a fish from the shore to look at and chuckled, “Hey, it’s a slant-tooth bream, we’re in luck.”
“Lakes in Finland are rich in aquatic plants, and slant-tooth bream is the most abundant edible fish in this kind of environment. It’s also one of the easiest fish to catch besides perch. Moreover, the end of May and the beginning of June is the spawning period for slant-tooth bream, which makes the meat rich and delicious, and it’s the peak time for shore fishing.”
Étienne’s eyes sparkled, rich and delicious meat!
With their catch, their hunting enthusiasm quickly soared. They stored the fish in a mesh bag and continued on, successfully catching a total of five slant-tooth bream before dinner.
Among them, three were caught by Étienne, of course, part of the reason was Bi Fang intentionally letting him try his hand at it.
For the next two days, Bi Fang and Étienne went out hunting whenever they had free time, from making traps to hunting techniques, as well as some common animal knowledge, all of which Étienne found fascinating.
Unfortunately, land animals were much harder to catch than aquatic creatures, and despite setting traps with the knowledge taught by Bi Fang for two consecutive days, he didn’t catch any prey.
As for actual hunting, that was utterly useless; rabbits, for instance, weren’t just difficult to approach within a ten-meter radius, even twenty meters was challenging.
Whenever they spotted a rabbit, the rabbit also noticed him, and what followed was a mutual stare followed by a frantic chase.
Bi Fang laughed heartily, consoling, “Don’t lose heart, land animals are not so easy to catch, otherwise skilled hunters would be everywhere, right? You have the knowledge, but it’s very difficult to combine it with practice and use it proficiently.”
Étienne sighed but wasn’t too disheartened, “Let’s go fishing again this afternoon.”
Étienne turned his gaze to the lake, and suddenly his eyes lit up, pointing to a surface of the water shimmering with light, “Hey, look!”
Étienne rounded a slight angle and indeed saw a large fish beneath the lake’s surface.
“It’s a dogfish!” Bi Fang, with sharp eyes, recognized what fish it was immediately and warned Étienne to be careful, “Dogfish are ferocious…”
Just as Bi Fang was about to elaborate, back in the distant RV, Elvan opened his computer, ready to monitor the movements of the geese, when suddenly the red dots appeared on the screen, showing they were less than a hundred kilometers away!
Elvan and Lenin were first stunned.
The next second, Bi Fang and the others saw the two of them excitedly run out of the RV, shouting loudly at them.
“Hey, come quick, the geese are coming!”
