Life of Being a Crown Prince in France
Chapter 1043 - 951: Scheller's Travel Notes · 4The Scheller couple were so shocked by what they heard that their eyes almost popped out.
God! This house is actually worth 18,000 francs, which is 7,200 florins!
One must know that even a high-end villa built in the center of Vienna costs only 7,000 florins.
He couldn’t help but glance again at those boxes around the corner of the stairs, and suddenly remembered hearing about the “Paris Angel” cosmetics in Vienna, which were extremely expensive and absolutely unaffordable for a small noble family like his.
No wonder this brother-in-law is so wealthy.
Baron Scheller, in his astonishment, also felt much more relieved.
It seems Elijah can indeed lend him 1,700 florins.
Lucas is saved!
Just as he was about to stand up and express his gratitude to Elijah, the door was pushed open.
A girl around sixteen or seventeen, dressed in a light green muslin dress, with gray-blue eyes, a high and straight nose, and a classical beauty, rushed in excitedly.
It wasn’t until she entered the living room that she noticed there were guests in the room, hurriedly applied the “emergency brake,” but stumbled due to bumping into the maid who was chasing her from behind.
The girl desperately regained her balance, awkwardly tidied her dress, then cautiously glanced at Elijah and softly said, “Father, who are these two?”
Before Elijah could answer, Mrs. Scheller stood up first, took the girl’s hand, and showed a loving smile, “Oh, my dear Corina, you’ve grown so much. Look at this beautiful face, just like a lily in the morning glow, bathed in the light of Aurora.”
The girl immediately curtsied nervously, “Thank you, madam, your praise really embarrasses me.”
Elijah hurriedly said, “Corina, this is your aunt. You often visited her house when we lived in Vienna.”
Corina apparently couldn’t remember things from over ten years ago and quickly curtsied again, “So nice to meet you, dear Aunt.
“Oh, this must be Uncle. I hope you are enjoying your time in Reims.”
Mrs. Scheller pulled her niece to sit down and began to eagerly chat, but the girl showed a hint of impatience on her face.
Elijah turned his head and quietly asked the maid, “Gina, why is the young lady back so early?”
Corina quickly chimed in, “Father, Baron Mahir is going to greet the army’s triumphant return, so class ended early today.”
Baron Mahir was her dance instructor, a very famous dancer in the Reims noble circle.
Elijah slightly frowned, “The army’s triumphant return?”
“Yes, General Massena’s troops have returned from Cologne; they are entering the city this afternoon,” Corina said excitedly, “Everyone’s preparing to welcome them.
“Actually, I wanted to come back to change my clothes and then go to the east of the city with Baron Mahir and the others…”
Elijah couldn’t help but smirk, “Very interesting. We’re Austrians, the French Army barely defeated our Emperor and now you want to go welcome them?”
Corina immediately protested, “I’m not Austrian at all. I’ve always lived in Reims; I’m French! You see, I’m not even good at speaking German anymore.”
“Say what you like. But you’d better not go anywhere this afternoon.”
Elijah gestured to the maid, “Gina just got back, so go tidy up the guestroom on the second floor. Your aunt and uncle’s luggage is in that room.
“Old John and his wife are on leave, and everything in the house is a mess.”
Corina was suddenly anxious, stood up, and said, “Father, well, Reina and Louisa are also going.”
Elijah hesitated for a moment, then nodded, “Alright, remember to come back early.”
Both girls were quite prominent noble ladies and were Corina’s classmates. One of the main reasons he initially let his daughter learn dance from Baron Mahir was to facilitate her interaction with them.
Corina was overjoyed and quickly changed into a very beautiful dress, pulling the maid as she was about to leave.
Elijah suddenly recalled something, looked at her, and asked, “Wait, did you just say the troops entering the city are the ones that went to Luxembourg before?”
“Yes, Father.”
Elijah frowned again, “Which means the tailor’s son has returned as well?”
Corina gave a look to the maid and then casually said, “I don’t know, maybe.”
The maid moved to the door and twisted the doorknob.
Corina immediately rushed out and jumped into the carriage, “Reina and Louisa must be growing impatient.”
Mrs. Scheller watched the still-swinging door and asked her cousin, “Who is the ‘tailor’s son’ you mentioned?”
The latter replied grumpily, “Just some poor boy who went to Paris two years ago to attend…oh, police school or something. Later, he returned to Reims for service, and somehow dazzled Corina into saying she’s in love with him.
“That youngster went to fight in Luxembourg last year, and I didn’t expect him to come back alive.”
Mrs. Scheller agreed, “His family is in tailoring? Then he surely doesn’t match Corina.”
“Exactly,” Elijah sighed, “At the beginning of the year, Baron Swazek came to propose, and I didn’t agree. How could I let her marry a poor boy?
“But Corina is almost 17, I need to quickly arrange a good match for her.”
After dinner, Elijah stood by the window waiting for his daughter to return. But until 8 PM, the street’s gas lamps had been lit for a long time, and his carriage was still nowhere to be seen.
He wasn’t worried about danger since she was with Baron Mahir, but he was always afraid that the tailor’s son might elope with his daughter.
Just as he was about to go out looking for her, the carriage returned.
Corina pushed the door open and entered, visibly upset, giving a quick bow to her father and the Scheller couple before retreating to her room and locking the door behind her.
Elijah suspiciously summoned the maid and asked, “Did Corina see that boy?”
Gina quickly nodded, “Yes, sir, they talked for a long time.”
Elijah gestured towards his daughter’s room, “So, did they have an argument?”
“It seems not, sir.”
“Then what’s wrong with Corina?”
Gina lowered her head and said, “I think it might be because of Mr. Twait’s injury.”
Twait was the tailor’s son.
“Injury? Is it serious?”
The maid’s voice grew softer, “He lost his left hand.”
Elijah’s eyes immediately brightened, “Oh, excellent…ah, I mean, it’s truly a pity; he’s so young.
“However, with this, Corina should give up on him. Hmm, no wonder she seemed so upset.”
Early the next morning, after Elijah had finished washing up and was about to have the servant buy some breakfast, he saw his daughter’s room door forcefully pushed open.
“Good morning, Corina. I’ve heard about Mr. Twait’s situation; it’s such a tragedy…”
Before Elijah could finish, Corina strode up to him, her tone resolute, “Father, I’ve made a decision.”
“Ah? What decision?”
“I want to get engaged to Twait!”
