Chapter 767

Bear-san Explores the Frozen Town

Even after checking the Adventurer’s Guild, we found nothing to confirm the current situation.

To be exact, there might have been something, but we couldn’t confirm it.

We left the Adventurer’s Guild without being able to obtain any useful information.

“Well, the situation will be the same even if we go to other places. Of course, we may also find something useful there miraculously.” (Kagali)

But it seemed like it was unlikely to happen.

There was no way that there was paper that did not spread ink after getting submerged in water or metal such as iron with this event engraved on it.

“The rest is probably to find a place that was not affected by the ice.” (Kagali)

“A place that is not affected by the ice… outside the town?” (Yuna)

The further away one was from the city, the less affected they should be.

Just a little further away from the town, there was no ice after all.

In simple terms, it would not affect Crimonia or the Land of Wa.

Well, if it were to affect places as far as those places, the world would be over.

“Or maybe the basement.” (Kagali)

Indeed, the deeper you go, the less affected it should be.

“Well, shall we search for a basement?”

“Searching for a basement is not easy. There are several problems. One, is there really a basement somewhere in this town? Two, even if there is a basement, are there any documents that describe this event? Only lowly people keep documents in the basement. Normally, basements are used to store grains or weapons. Or, to prevent people from escaping.”

A place to lock people in.

“You mean a prison.” (Yuna)

I imagined something unpleasant when I said so.

If the basements were safe, what about food? I wondered.

In this situation, would anyone be able to bring food…

“And even if there was a basement, it might also be frozen all the way down to the basement. That just means this ice is different from normal ice.” (Kagali)

Whether the basement was frozen or not, all I could think of was a horrible scene awaiting us.

However, we were not really sure if there was really a basement in this town as Kagali-san said, and even if there was, where would it be? Even just searching for one would be difficult.

“Besides, building a basement is a pain. You don’t build one unless you have a reason.” (Kagali)

Basements were often built to hide or protect something.

If you had land to build a building on, you could just build on the land itself.

In Tokyo, which was small and densely populated, there were many reasons to build a basement, but no one built one in the vast countryside without a purpose or reason.

“So, what are we going to do?” (Kagali)

After expressing her thoughts, Kagali-san left the decision of what to do up to me.

“For now, we’ll check other places and see if we can find a basement.” (Yuna)

It was not guaranteed that there wasn’t a basement.

If this town froze recently, there might be some people still alive in the basement.

Of course, even if there were people trapped underground, I didn’t think they knew what the current situation would be on the surface.

After that, we went into buildings that we expected to give us information and checked, but we didn’t get any new information.

“It’s getting dark. I’ll ask the same question again, what are we going to do?” (Kagali)

I thought about using the Bear Transfer Gate to return to the Land of Wa.

I didn’t want to give up and return to Crimonia.

I wanted to continue to look into the situation tomorrow.

“What about Kagali-san?” (Yuna)

“I intend to accompany you. If you give up, the exploration will end. But if you continue to explore tomorrow, I’ll accompany you.” (Kagali)

“Thank you. Then, let’s stay here for tonight.” (Yuna)

“You’re staying in this town?” (Kagali)

“I can go back to the Land of Wa if you’d like, but something might happen at night.” (Yuna)

In games, there were usually events that happened only at night.

Also, the cause of the freezing might also happen again at night.

“Is that so? My body is cold, and I want to warm myself up in the hot springs.” (Kagali)

Even with the heat-preserving magic, she was feeling cold.

Or was it because of the magic ice that was draining her?

“We can go back to the hot spring.” (Yuna)

I looked around and set up a Bear House in the middle of the road.

“Why did you build it in the middle of the road?” (Kagali)

“Because it’s not something you can do normally?” (Yuna)

In most places, especially in a town like Crimonia or the Royal Capital, I couldn’t normally put Bear House on the roads.

If I were to put it there, it would be conspicuous, people would gather, making it quite a spectacle. Above all, it would be a nuisance. I think an order to remove it would be issued immediately.

But as things stand, it didn’t bother anyone in this town, so no order to remove it would be issued. On the contrary, it would be helpful if someone would order it to be removed.

“Besides, if there are still people here, they would notice the house because it would be conspicuous, right?” (Yuna)

I did this with consideration of what Kagali-san thought about. If there were people living underground, they might come out at night.

Just imagining it was actually quite scary in a way.

“Indeed, this Bear House is conspicuous. If there were people out there, they might actually approach.”

Kagali-san agreed, so we moved to the Land of Wa to warm up our cold bodies before dinner and went to the hot springs.

“Kagali-san, do you have an idea on the situation after all?” (Yuna)

I asked Kagali-san, who was soaking in the bathtub.

“I don’t know.” (Kagali)

“Even for Kagali-san, there are things you don’t know.” (Yuna)

“No one knows everything in this world.” (Kagali)

Maybe only God.

“All I know is that the ice is filled with a small amount of magic. And that ice is spreading throughout the whole town.” (Kagali)

“A small amount of magic means someone must have done it?” (Yuna)

There were also magic circles that absorb magic. It wouldn’t be strange if there was also a magic circle that was able to freeze a town.

“Well, it’s definitely not something that happened naturally.” (Kagali)

It seemed like I was headed into a troublesome situation.

I knew it was best not to get involved.

But I was curious about what the [Bear Signpost] was pointing to.

The [Bear Signpost] had fulfilled its role, and it had not glowed once since then. It seemed like it would not be glowing even after I returned to Crimonia.

“Thank you, Kagali-san.” (Yuna)

“I’m already on board. I’m killing time, but I’m also curious.” (Kagali)

I agreed with that.

I was definitely curious about how it all ended up like that.

I was so curious that I couldn’t sleep at night.

We returned to the ice town and went to sleep with Kagali-san, Swaying Bear, and Hugging Bear, just in case something happened.

I asked Swaying Bear and Hugging Bear to wake me up if something happened.

And I also asked them to wake me up in the morning.

It was a convenient bear alarm clock.

Nothing happened during the night, then in the morning Hugging Bear woke me up.

Next to him, Swaying Bear was rocking Kagali-san’s body.

“Is it morning already? I’m going to get up, so stop rocking me.” (Kagali)

Kagali-san got up, rubbing her eyes.

“Nothing happened.” (Yuna)

“That’s right. But maybe something did happen that we just didn’t notice.” (Kagali)

That was true.

After we finished our breakfast, we cleaned up in the Bear House and started exploring the ice town.

We didn’t know where to look, so we just walked around the town.

This was the road we walked yesterday. There we found the Adventurer’s Guild.

We ended up returning here after taking a side street.

I checked it yesterday, so I tried to pass in front of the Adventurer’s Guild building. But Kagali-san told Swaying Bear to stop.

Kagali-san was looking at the Adventurer’s Guild.

I wondered if there was something that bothered her.

I looked at the Adventurer’s Guild as well.

I felt something was off.

What was it?

“The door is frozen.” (Kagali)

Oh, right.

The ice that Kagali-san melted with magic yesterday returned to its original state before.

“I wonder what happened?” (Kagali)

Kagali-san got off the Swaying Bear and touched the frozen door.

“Did it freeze overnight?” (Kagali)

“I wonder, maybe something did happen during the night?” (Yuna)

“I don’t know. Maybe it was just restored.” (Kagali)

“Restored?” (Yuna)

“If there was a snowstorm at night, your Bear House would have been buried in snow. But this door simply froze.” (Kagali)

Indeed, unlike the door, the Bear House wasn’t frozen.

I didn’t know if the Bear House was simply special or if there was no snowstorm.

I’d never left a Bear House in the extreme cold, so I could not tell what would happen.

Kagali-san approached the Adventurer’s Guild and melted part of the ice on the door with fire magic.

“We’ll know when we check this again later. Now then, was it some kind of influence that was causing this, or something man-made?” (Kagali)

There were many possible reasons I could think of.

Yesterday, a snowstorm could have started, freezing this door. My Bear House, on the other hand, was special, so it didn’t freeze.

If it was really a magic circle that froze the whole town, then even if we melt the ice, it would freeze again after a while.

Also, although it was unlikely, it could be that a person or monster froze it.

There’s so much we didn’t know.

We left the Adventurer’s Guild and resumed our exploration.

Swaying Bear and Hugging Bear, carrying me and Kagali-san, arrived near the center of the town.

“What is this?”

The place where the fountain was supposed to be was destroyed, the surrounding buildings had collapsed, and the ground was gouged out.

“Was there a battle here?” (Kagali)

The surrounding area was destroyed as if there had been a fierce battle. The destroyed scenery was also frozen as if time had stopped.

“Didn’t you notice it when you looked down from above yesterday?” (Yuna)

“Maybe I didn’t notice it because I was focusing on looking outside the town. Also, the surrounding buildings are tall and everything is frozen, so I couldn’t tell from a distance.”

That meant this couldn’t have happened last night.

“I have a bad feeling about this.” (Kagali)

Kagali-san said, looking around.

I was worried because Kagali-san’s hunch seemed to be right.

She was a fox spirit, after all. (Though it was only her saying this)

Kagali-san got off the Swaying Bear and touched the frozen ground and buildings around her.

“Did you find any clues?” (Yuna)

“I can only tell that there is more magic power in this area than other places.” (Kagali)

“So, could this be the epicenter that created this frozen town?” (Yuna)

I wondered if there was a magic circle nearby?

Or was there a different cause?

Kagali-san floated and checked the ruined buildings.

Then, the moment she turned around, she looked surprised.

“What’s wrong?” (Yuna)

“I think my bad feeling was right. Come over here.” (Kagali)

I jumped and landed on top of the building.

Then I looked in the direction Kagali-san was looking.

The hole which I thought was created by the result of a fierce battle turned out to be a giant footprint.
