Chapter 2607: Return
A glistening teardrop flowed down the Goddess of Wu Mountain’s cheeks. This one floated, unlike the others that had fallen to the ground. She raised her dainty hands and gently guided the teardrop into a jade bottle.
She passed the jade bottle to Zu An. “With this, you should be able to complete the Defying Spirit Tears and treat Xiaoxi.”
Seeing how she was still thinking on his behalf despite being in tears, Zu An couldn’t hold it back anymore and pulled her into his arms.
The previous him, like many other men, had thought that it would be best if all beautiful women in the world could be his. But now that he had many lovers, he realized that love could be hurtful at times.
He had been through far too many separations. After his separation from the Mermaid Queen at the Frost Palace, he'd thought that nothing else could hurt him anymore.
But now, he realized that he was extremely wrong. A heart could be hurt twice in succession, even if one time was more painful than the other.
The other ladies in the distance noticed them hugging and frowned, as if discussing their earlier bets. But when they noticed the Goddess of Wu Mountain’s tears and Zu An’s pained look, their excitement waned. Even from a distance away, they could feel the sorrowful air on Zu An’s side.
The Goddess of Wu Mountain trembled in Zu An’s arms. It was rare for her to even speak to others, let alone be embraced by a man. Being held by his sturdy arms left her shy, but she also couldn’t help but wonder how much longer she could enjoy this embrace.
Zu An racked his brain for a solution, not wanting a repeat of what happened with the Mermaid Queen. All of a sudden, his eyes lit up, and he reached out to wipe her tears as he asked, “Yaoji, why don’t you come with us if you don’t mind?”
The Nature Jade would likely have no problem taking another person with them. Unlike Chang’e, who was bound to the Frost Palace, the Goddess of Wu Mountain wasn’t tied down by anything.
To his surprise, the Goddess of Wu Mountain shook her head and replied, “I can’t go.”
Seeing the confusion in Zu An’s eyes, the Goddess of Wu Mountain slowly explained, “I have been on this mountain ever since I was conferred as the Goddess of Wu Mountain. I don’t know how long has passed, but I often unknowingly morph into Wu Mountain’s Goddess Peak. In a way, I have already become one with Wu Mountain. I’m in a similar situation to little sister Chang’e. She is cursed by the Frost Palace, whereas I’m tied down by Wu Mountain.”
Zu An felt as if his heart had been plunged into a glacier. He could take a person, but he couldn’t take an entire mountain away with him. He felt helpless. When he first transmigrated over, he'd been much weaker, but he had never felt as helpless as this. Despite having grown stronger, it felt like there were more things that he couldn’t resolve now.
“Don’t be upset about it. This is my fate. I’m glad I met you. Meeting you has opened my eyes, and I was able to experience many different emotions I never knew about before.” The Goddess of Wu Mountain turned around and consoled Zu An instead.
That only pained Zu An more, however.
The Goddess of Wu Mountain grabbed his hand and led him to the cliff. “Big brother Zu, you don’t have to be sad. Whenever you see this cloud and fog, it will be the same as me being by your side. If Wu Mountain still exists in the future, you can look for me there too. It’s just that I might have completely morphed into the Goddess Peak by then.”
Zu An’s eyes reddened, and his voice was deeper than usual. “I’m worried about you. I have other friends with me, but you’ll be staying here alone.”
The Goddess of Wu Mountain laughed. “I’m not alone. The wind, the clouds, and the rain are my friends. Besides, little sister Chang’e is still around. I can visit her now and then for a chat.”
Zu An often heard that his mouth was as sweet as if it were smeared with honey, but why did everything just feel so bitter right now? He struggled to find the words to console her.
The Goddess of Wu Mountain wouldn’t have cried so hard if she were truly fine. Her composure was merely a front to lessen his worry, but her consideration only made him feel worse.
“I’d love to meet Miss Manman,” the Goddess of Wu Mountain suddenly remarked.
Her judgment aligned with Xihe’s—she was likely Pei Mianman’s previous incarnation. It was good news that the future Pei Mianman got together with Zu An, but her very existence meant that the Goddess of Wu Mountain had eventually passed away. She had no idea how she died and why she had chosen to reincarnate, but there must have been a compelling reason.
My love is fulfilled in the future, but this also means that I’m unlikely to meet him ever again in this life. That thought made her emotions go into turmoil again, and tears glistened in her eyes.
A drizzle began falling upon Wu Mountain, enveloping it in fog.
Zu An was about to say something when the Nature Jade suddenly emanated a brilliant light that enveloped him and the other ladies. The next second, they all vanished into thin air.
The Goddess of Wu Mountain tried to grab him, but it was too late.
For a long time, she was reluctant to lower her hand that had frozen in mid-air. The vibrant Wu Mountain suddenly felt unbearably empty. She initially hadn't been able to get used to the guests residing in Wu Mountain, finding them too noisy. However, she found herself reminiscing about their joyous laughter.
She walked to the cliff and looked at the distant sea of clouds. Her figure slowly blurred until she morphed into the Goddess Peak.
That day, Wu Mountain rained heavier than ever.
...
Before they knew it, Zu An and the others appeared inside a lake. He quickly pulled the others up to shore before falling silent.
“Where are we?” Ji Xiaoxi surveyed their surroundings, but it was so dark that if they weren’t cultivators, they couldn’t have seen a thing at all.
“It’s the Fiend race’s Imperial Tomb,” Xie Daoyun, who retained the memories of the time she'd been possessed by Xihe, said.
“Ah, we returned to that spacetime fragment!” Ji Xiaoxi was delighted. That meant they could soon return to their original era. However, she soon recalled something and apologetically pulled on Zu An’s arm. “Big brother Zu, are you still feeling awful?”
Before Zu An could answer, a gleeful laugh echoed in the distance. “Milord was right! You would eventually return here!”
