Chapter 1574: The Assembly Ends
"Something is wrong," Wang Bo said as he looked at Ying Zheng and the other four standing a small step behind Maitreya. "Why are their muscles so tense as if they are under tremendous pressure?" Almost all these people are Primals, meaning they should have absolute control over their strength. Yet, even someone like Wang Bo can notice something wrong with them.
"Then, there is Kong. He is physically sweating," Wang Bo added.
"Do you think it’s a simple matter to alleviate the burden of Heavenly Dao?" Wang Wei replied. This was not the lower dimension where a Third-Class Emperor was on par with Heavenly Dao, or an Eternal Emperor could suppress an entire World Community.
"They should be fine after more people are selected to bear the burden," Qiyuan explained.
"Will the burden be completely done?"
"No."
"In that case, isn’t the position a liability?" Wang Bo asked.
"He has already perfected the system," Yan Hai said. "We will need to refine a special artifact to bear the brunt during battle."
"It seems like I need to read more about your adventure in the lower dimension," Wang Bo said while giving Wang Wei side eyes. However, the latter ignored him.
"I suddenly thought of something," Wang Wei said. "How is the original concept of the Heavenly Emperor and Heavenly Court supposed to operate?" The concept of Heavenly Emperor existed in the world, but Wang We created his own system and did not follow the established path.
"The Heavenly Emperor Position was supposed to only appear when an error or problem occurred in the operations of the world’s Heaven Laws. The Heavenly Court was a special area directly connected to the laws that the Emperor would spend countless years in isolation helping fix the issue," Qiyuan explained.
"That sounds like a miserable state of existence," Wang Wei commented. All he could picture was a man sitting on a throne, alone and isolated, bearing the ultimate burden as it helped save the world.
"That was the point," Qiyuan said. "After serving their time, the Heavenly Emperor would be free and blessed with the title. They were not supposed to have this much freedom or political power.
"Your system redefined how this position operated, and it seemed both Heavenly Dao and Grand Dao liked your approach better."
"They love my idea, but the amount of compensation I receive does not correspond to how valuable it was," Wang Wei sneered.
"You should take it to them."
"Maybe one day, I will," Wang Wei replied. "By the way, there is something else that’s been bothering me. Why are you so quiet?"
"Excuse me?"
"Everyone seemed to be making great moves, but you — the one who is usually the mastermind — has remained quiet. I don’t believe for a second you’re just waiting for me. You must have some things planned."
"I do, but now is not the time," Qiyuan said calmly.
"Are you waiting for all 13 original Emperors to become Peak Paragons?"
"That’s one of the things I’m waiting for," Qiyuan nodded calmly.
Wang Wei squinted. "All this time, I’ve been worrying about Ying Zheng but forgot about you. You already have a perfect and universal Soul Quintessence Technique. All you need is a few transcendent foundations, and your transcendent path will be prepared."
Qiyuan looked at him, smiled, and shook his head. "If only things were that simple." Wang Wei looked at him but did not utter another word. He knew this old and cunning bastard must be planning something. Therefore, there must be a reason why he hasn’t mentioned it yet.
The ceremony continued as Maitreya continued to read names for the Conferred God List. Kong, and probably the others as well, felt relieved as the burden slowly diminished over time. The ceremony lasted a few hours, and vision covered the sky for the entire duration.
Then, as Maitreya uttered the last name, the first round of merit descended from Heaven and Earth. These cultivators smiled from ear to ear, and even the weaker ones who still felt the pressure did not mind at this moment. The interesting thing is Wang Wei — who held no divine position — also received a decent amount of merit. It appeared as if Heavenly Dao heard his complaint and rewarded him for it.
"That’s more like it," Wang Wei nodded as he put his share away. After the ceremony, everybody flew into the Heavenly Court to their division or position. Wang Wei and Yan Hai were the only ones who would return to the sect. Qiyuan took control of his department. Wang Bo and Miscellaneous worked in the Disaster Relief Division, while Tong Song worked in the same association’s division. Shadow Ruler worked in the scout division, cultivating spies for the upcoming war.
Before leaving, Wang Wei contacted Wu Hong. "I’m guessing you’re not going home anytime soon?"
"Yes, I have a lot of work to do," Wu Hong nodded. She needed to create the formation for the court and discuss the operation guidelines with Maitreya for the Disaster Relief Division.
"You know you don’t have to give your best for this court, right?" Wang Wei said. It’s hard to tell how effective this court will be with so many selfish people who only allied themselves out of temporary benefit. In Wang Wei’s opinion, Maitreya should have taken the Heavenly Emperor Position and forced everybody to obey — just like Wang Wei did in the lower dimension.
"I understand why you feel this way, but this court means a lot to Maitreya, so I’ll do my best," Wu Hong said.
"Is that so? Well, take care of yourself."
"I will."
"Oh, where is Song Jiang? Maybe I can try to talk to him before I leave."
Wu Hong sighed. "He already left."
"So fast?"
"He said he wanted no affiliation with the court and preferred to stay home to look at the sect," Wu Hong said. "I really shouldn’t have sheltered those two."
"He’ll be fine. The first heartbreak is indeed hard, but time usually heals everything," Wang Wei reassured.
"Alright. I have a lot of work to do. See you later."
"See you later," Wang Wei ended the conversation. He flew toward Yan Hai to return to the sect.
Heavenly Court, Eastern Emperor Palace:
Emperor Kong slowly walked through this exquisite palace that was the symbol of nobility and power. However, he felt no excitement, no sense of achievement — he only felt humiliated. First, there was the crowning of Taoism and Buddhism as the official religion/school of thought of the Eternal Ascension World.
As a person who followed the Literary Way, Emperor Kong understood how devastating it would be for his school now that they had these positions. The Literary Way was already behind during the Golden Era, as only one Primal appeared, and they had no independent faction with the position of Overlord.
Now, the luck and destiny of Taoism and Buddhism have further consolidated and even evolved to a higher state. Ancient records spoke of how the three religions once ruled the world side by side, but now, the Literary Way has been outclassed.
That proposition had already dealt a serious blow to Emperor Kong, but what happened afterward was even worse. Kong had no power, no sway, no influence in the assembly’s discussion. He only received his position out of pure luck — out of the favor of the Saint.
"There is no need to let my ego get in the way," Emperor Kong told himself. "I have the positions, my disciples have decent positions, and the academy will benefit. I should put all my focus on using my current position to my advantage." Emperor Kong looked in the distance. Destiny was on his side, meaning if he played his cards correctly, he could become the Heavenly Emperor and slowly build his luck, destiny, and power.
Emperor Kong exhaled before walking away. He had no political power in this court, so his primary focus for a while will be toward the creation of the Mortal Soul Legion.
Western Emperor Palace:
Dugu Baitian sat on a throne, deep in thought. In today’s ceremony, he saw a glimpse of his dream — of his goal. He must stand at the top of all sentient beings, with Paragons, the laws of Heaven and Earth, and even Saints, bowing to him. He must control all of creation: from the laws of heaven, to the societal rules of the human world, and even the Yin and Yang of Samsara.
’Ying Zheng’s path fit me rather well, but it’s not quite the perfect fit,’ Dugu Baitian thought. ’However, I can start by taking the Heavenly Emperor Position from him to see what it is that I’m missing.’ He turned around to glance at Ancestral Dragon City.
’Normally, I would be confident in killing him under the right circumstances, but now there is another variable.’ During the meeting, his Emotion Spectrum Orb warned him of a danger that originated from the Great Wall. Based on how cocky Ying Zheng was acting and the warning, Dugu Baitian guessed he was not the only lucky individual during the taboo.
’Hmm?’ He suddenly sensed a summons for a secret meeting. ’Speak of the devil and it shall appear.’
