Chapter 997: 997 How It’s Made

It was only a few minutes before King Petros came back out with his retinue of advisors and scribes, all smiling and ready to make a deal.

“Saint Noxus, we have selected a number of locations where we would like to set up various shops, but we do have one odd request as the location was not on the selected sites that you had pre-approved. You see, there are many vendors in the market, but there are none close to the residential areas.

What we would like is to set up an artificer’s General Store next to the new blue tower where the mage students are training. Many of them live in the area, but the tower has been isolated from the merchants by at least four blocks.

Now, that doesn’t take long to walk, but it would be much more convenient if there were a shop that sold the essentials between their homes and the tower where they will be doing their training.” King Petros explained.

Wolfe looked at the distribution, and realized that the area in between was indeed a safety buffer zone, with two blocks of open park, and then residential. So, the houses that most of the students lived in were a four block walk from the tower, though the blocks here were smaller than they were in the Fortress City.

It was still somewhat inconvenient that there were no stores available in between them and the research tower.

There were shops on the other side of the park, and on the other side of the residences, but the tower had been a later addition to the city plans, and Wolfe had been more concerned about them blowing things up than the convenience of shopping.

So, they could get what they needed faster than they could get to the tower, but it was in the wrong direction.

“Alright, there are a few spots where I could make something work. The base of this complex, for example. It’s near where you requested, on the main walkway into the tower park, so the students would pass right by it.

However, it is a small space, intended more for a home business, and not a retail shop, so you wouldn’t be able to make it some sort of catch-all Mega Mart.” Wolfe suggested.

One of the assistants brought up the plans for the space, which was only four metres by six. As Wolfe had said, it was not a large space at all.

Petros frowned. “That is too small. While it is just a convenience store, it would normally stock drinks and snacks, as well as essential tools and magical devices that the students might need, so it would need a back room for high-value items. That storefront size might work, but is there another unit beside it that could be attached?”

The assistants brought up the current occupancy plans.

“The unit beside it is vacant as well, and similarly sized. We could alter it into a double unit, with a secure storeroom and only one entrance.” Wolfe agreed as he looked over the layout.

“Wonderful. Then that is settled. We will take that as one of the spaces, and then these to complete the set.” King Petros announced.

One of the assistants, a young Bunny with her hair in tiny braids, raised her hand. “King Petros, sir. I should inform you that if you are intending to have the primary sales of that shop be drinks and snacks, you should be aware that there are vendor stalls in the park.

They’re not on the map because they’re not permanent structures, but the mobile carts are a staple of Forest Grove.”

The King’s advisors muttered among themselves for a moment before giving him a thumbs up.

“That should be fine. We can cut out the drinks and snacks and instead offer a wider variety of useful trinkets for students and workers. The sort of things that you wear out all the time, or forget and need without going all the way home. Pens, measuring tools, spell focusing wands and such.” Petros explained.

The girl was a bit lost as to how you would leave home and forget your casting tools, but they were known to be fragile, so there was a chance they would break during class, and carrying a spare fragile thing was also a bad idea.

But, it wasn’t her job to make sure he had a good business plan, she just felt obligated to make certain that he was aware of what else was in the area.

While Wolfe and his team were busy with the details of the shops, Ella took her pair down to the highway parking area mechanic’s shop to oversee the refit and rebuild of a few of the cargo trucks that were complaining of excessive wear.

At first, it had been Monika that had been the excited one to see their workshops, but that was only because the mage hadn’t understood what a cargo truck was. Her mind still thought of carriages and wagons as transport vehicles, so she had thought that a cargo truck was some sort of warehouse tool, which seemed like a rather dull morning.

But when she saw the trucks coming in and out of the loading docks on their way to the repair bays, a level of excitement that would make the average Faerie seem calm had come over her.

“Lady Ella, what are those? Will we get to see more of those today? They’re so fast, and that all seems like it’s magic powered, I don’t see a single horse anywhere.” She rambled.

“Those are cargo trucks. We are going to the repair bays so we can talk to the technicians about why some of them are wearing out before their usual maintenance intervals.” Ella explained.

“Where are the mines for the materials?” Monika asked curiously.

She knew there were a limited number of witches on the continent, so they couldn’t expect that everything was created with Earth Magic.

“That depends. Some of the trucks are military surplus, and some are made with magic here in the catacombs under the city. We will know for certain when we see them which location these ones came from.

If they’re locally made, it might be an issue with lower ranked magic users not making alloys up to the needed standard. If they’re military surplus, they might just need a full overhaul and not maintenance. Many of them saw multiple shoddy field repairs during their lifecycle due to combat damage.” Ella explained.

“This place suddenly seems much more interesting.” The Dwarf replied with a smile on her face.
