Chapter 1115: 1115 Finish The Job
[Tell them they can wait and lend me some power. I will finish up the underground areas that we didn’t do yet. I’m not feeling people-y today.] Stephanie informed Wolfe when she realized that everyone was looking for her.
[Alright, go ahead and start. They will get the message, and then I will come along after you and finish the furniture.] Wolfe agreed, shaking his head at Cassie and Ella.
There was no point in arguing with her. If Stephanie was forced to change back into the little girl that her human form had become, nobody would take her seriously unless she flexed her power first, so she might as well do the parts of the job that they had been delaying.
With the extra two dozen hands, it wasn’t a big deal to keep the crowd of applicants in line, but Wolfe knew that Cassie and Ella wouldn’t stand for Stephanie to be slacking again today, when she lived a life of leisure in cat form every other day.
The flood of applicants took three hours to slow once the portals were open, but the temporary division heads had done an excellent job, and now the crowd was down to mostly specialists that Wolfe and the Pentacles would have to choose, and a few groups that needed a second round of interviews because there were simply too many outstanding applicants.
Some people had realized that quickly, and once they found that there were too many people with better skills and experience for the jobs available, they had returned home to try their luck elsewhere.
Too many qualified people meant very little chance of moving up through the ranks, so if you started low, you would stay there for many years.
So, as illustrious as a position at the Noxus Castle might be, they weren’t going to take that path, they would look for opportunities closer to home.
“Next.” Wolfe called to the line of specialists who didn’t fit into the categories directly related to the operation of the castle.
A young Elf girl who looked like she should still be in grade school and not looking for a job ran up to him with a smile.
“Good Morning, Your Majesty. Or, evening in this world, I suppose. I would like to apply for the position of Intelligence Analyst.” She announced, then took a stack of papers out of what must have been a storage item, as the envelope was wider than her torso.
Wolfe flipped it open and read the first few lines.
[Name: Nikki]
[Species: Mimic]
She was good. Even his senses had thought that she was an Elf until he read that and took a closer look at her. Her magic as Fae, and fairly generic, nothing that would immediately give her away.
The people behind her in line were chuckling at her request, as they all saw a young Elven girl as well. So, Wolfe decided to play along.
“Alright, I will give you an interview. Come here and sit on Lady Cassie’s lap, and you can whisper everything you have observed about the next few applicants to her. I will judge the answers and decide if you’re qualified.”
While he spoke, Wolfe looked through the file quickly, and saw that she did have a rather large amount of experience, but she was from a world where the Fallen Empire had recently taken over, and their humans first policy had put her out of work when the old ruling family had fallen.
She had obviously escaped from a purge of loyalists and was intending to blend in with the people of this world, but had been drawn by the chance to get a proper job and not just menial labour.
If Wolfe was right, the Mimic couldn’t change her actual volume or weight, only her shape. So, at best she could be a child of most intelligent species, or a small variety of Fae.
She looked adorable with Cassie’s arm wrapped protectively around her, and the little mimic lovingly patted her belly.
“Oh, a firstborn son. You are a lucky lady.” She informed Cassie with her infectious smile firmly in place.
“How did you know that?” Cassie asked.
“Fae magic. I just know things sometimes.” She shrugged.
Well, that did give her an edge as an intelligence gathering asset.
[I can also see auras.] She whispered in Cassie’s ear, unaware that Wolfe’s enhanced senses would also pick it up, though it was too low for the Fae in line to hear anything.
The next up was a Dark Iron Dwarf, one of many for the day. It seemed like half of their clan had shown up today looking for work.
Not because they were in dire straights or anything, but because someone from their Clan had been to Forest Grove and had been singing the praises of the forges there, and now they all wanted to work at a Magi built forge.
“Axel WhiteAnvil, Rank Six Master Smith, with a specialization in carriage works.” The black bearded Dwarf introduced himself.
“Carriages, is it? Is that what drew you here?” Ella asked.
The dwarf nodded. “I hear that you’ve got wicked fast ones that can travel across rough land faster than a horse can run, while carrying more than a mining cart.
That’s just the sort of thing that I would like to know more about, and I have a century of experience improving steel for springs and cargo bodies.”
Nikki turned her head up to whisper to Cassie.
[Dwarves are kind of creepy, he gets horny when he’s thinking about different types of steel.]
Cassie managed to keep her laughter to a low giggle, while Wolfe’s smile could have been mistaken as approval of the Dwarf’s explanation of his skills.
“I think that there is room for a specialist such as yourself. Good vehicle engineers are hard to find, and I have a feeling that you are passionate about your work.
If you would please wait to the side here, my team will get you sorted out as soon as they can.”
