Chapter 1073: 1073 To Restore Chronos
While Asmodai the Lich Lord was working on the spells that he wanted to send with Wolfe to test for possible successors to his Family, Wolfe went back outside the house to let his escort know what was going on.
“The Lich Lord who oversees this place needs some time to get spells ready to send to the surface, so I can start to rebuild his Family for him, should there be anyone left carrying his bloodline.
The miasma and the weaker undead should have been cleansed from the area already, so you can relax for a while, or return to your duties. I know that you only promised your Queen to take me to the first village, so your duty has ended, and you are free to go if you wish.” Wolfe explained.
The Selkie shrugged, an adorable gesture in seal form, and answered. [We were supposed to spy on you from a distance to make sure that there wouldn’t be a powerful new undead coming for the Queen’s home territory.
So, we might as well just stay by your side and give the report when we get back.]
Wolfe laughed. “She didn’t think that I was going to go this far in, did she?”
The two mermen laughed while the Selkie shook her head. “She didn’t know that it was so easy for a Magi to cleanse this corruption. It has resisted her efforts for two centuries now, but it parts for you like an old friend.”
Wolfe chuckled. “In a way, it is. You see, it’s easier to use Unholy Magic to offset curses and other Unholy Magic. So my version of mana cleansing is very much in tune with the nature of the problem, and it doesn’t resist my efforts to remove it.”
The Fae looked bemused at Wolfe’s answer. “You know, I never expected to hear that sort of phrasing about the use of Unholy Magic. Perhaps the ways of the Magi aren’t all that different to the Fae, they’re just in tune with different aspects of the world.”
That made sense to Wolfe.
“That sounds right. While the Fae are in tune with the living portions of the world, the Magi are more in tune with the Elements. It’s a bit hard to conceptualize Unholy Energy as an Element, but that’s more to do with its origin than anything else.”
The Fae looked intrigued. “So, you know the truths behind the Unholy Element?”
Wolfe nodded. “To an extent beyond what is considered Adept. Unholy Energy is not an energy of this world, it bleeds in from others, and we just use it.
That’s why the Undead are made with Unholy magic imbued with the nature of the Underworld. A touch of the afterlife, in this world, makes them somewhat immortal, but not completely transformed the way they should be.
So, there are two basic cures. To have a Witch return them to the living by attuning them to the world as they heal them, or to have a Mage release them by cleansing the mana in their body of the Unholy Magic.
I’m not actually purifying anything in the way that the Fae do, I am just returning the Mana in the area to its natural state, and that ends all the lingering spell effects, including the undead curse caused by [Necrosis].”
A small undead woman came out and bowed to Wolfe. “The Castellan is ready for your presence. It seems that when the Family left, they prepared for this eventuality, and there was a stock of items premade in the storage room.”
“Thank you, Miss.” Wolfe replied, and the girl smiled, revealing that her form was hollow inside, just a spectre with a shell of her former appearance.f
“Can you do me a favour, Saint?” She asked.
“Of course, whatever you request, if it’s in my power.” Wolfe agreed easily.
“It has only been me and him forever, could you bring people back here soon? I have so many things to show them.”
Wolfe smiled. The desires of the undead were usually simple, even when they were intelligent ones like the Spectre girl.
“Of course. Once we find some descendants with remnants of the Chronos bloodline, we will send them down to meet you. We will have to wait until they have advanced a few ranks so that they can make the trip safely, but it shouldn’t be long.” He agreed.
She led Wolfe back inside the manor, where Lich Lord Asmodai was looking a bit embarrassed.
“I should have guessed that the Elders would have foreseen the events today. They even left a note for you by name. It’s a bit dusty, but I didn’t want to tamper with it at all. I hadn’t been in that supply room since the war, there was no need to enter it when there were no new Family Members entering the manor.
So, here it is, and I will make more to replace them, so the next time this situation arises, there will be items prepared again. I might live a long time, but even a Lich Lord isn’t truly eternal.” Asmodai explained.
Wolfe laughed. “While the word eternal probably means something very different to the two of us, you should have a couple of millennia left at the very least.”
The Lich Lord laughed. “I put my phylactery inside a gem, coated in gold, and placed in a stasis spell. It should be ten or fifteen thousand years before I am in any real danger of fading, but there is no telling how long it will take before the full gifts of the Chronos Family return.”
That sounded a lot like forever to Wolfe, and he was fairly certain that when that time got close, he was capable of moving his bound soul to a new container, or at least repairing and reinforcing the one that he was using.
“In that case, I will give you a bit of advice from the humans. If you create a jar and use air magic to suck everything out of it, leaving your container in the vacuum, it should be fine even after the stasis spell ends.
A vacuum container is the nonmagical answer to stasis magic for preventing corrosion.” Wolfe explained.
“Oh, that is interesting. I never did study human technology in my later years, and none of that existed when I was young and curious like you are.”
