Chapter 1048: 1048 That’s All Of Them
The next group took most of an hour to be ready to go, but the soldiers were happy to wait and keep relaying messages back to their leadership.
“Once they have left, could you remain for a few minutes to speak to my division leader? They have some questions for you regarding the situation, and what exactly your intentions are with the relocated mages.” The attack team leader informed Wolfe just before the second group began to arrive at the tower.
“That shouldn’t be an issue. I have people on the other side who are waiting for them, and some of those people already know them, so they will help them get acclimated without me being personally present.” Wolfe agreed.
The Mages stopped to greet Wolfe, or give him hugs as they passed by. These mages had been in worse conditions than the first group, and were already under attack when the others arrived to offer them a way out.
So, it was no surprise when a barrier went up over the portal room as the last of the Mages left the area.
“Is that everyone?” Wolfe asked as the Elders from the local tower began to leave.
“That’s everyone who is coming. Some chose not to come along. I don’t know if your world has this saying, but here we say I was born in this dirt and I will die in this dirt.” The last Elder out of the building informed them.
Wolfe nodded. “Yeah, we know that sentiment. Once you’re settled, you will learn a bit more about our Great War, and you will understand the level to which we will take it when pushed.
But today, there is no need for such extreme measures by the entire population. Please follow the others to the tower, and my people will get you settled.”
The Elder nodded and followed his people, while the military commander sighed.
“Why do I get the feeling that we’ve got one last major battle left in front of us?” He asked after all the Mages were gone.
“That’s really on you. You could issue a decree for a protected region for indigenous cultures and leave the mages there undisturbed. It would let them carry on their traditions and avert a full-scale war while saving face.
Or you could throw bodies at the issue until they’ve stacked up the towers like a staircase.”
The unit commander chuckled and shook his head. “No, I don’t think that we will go that route. The orders are specifically not to cause a civil war.”
Another soldier, a Rank Six mage from the Fallen Empire, came up and gave Wolfe a polite bow.
“Saint Noxus, I’m not sure if you remember me, but we briefly met at a social function in the Capital on the day that the new King Ascended to the throne. Earl Warma, General of the inclusion force on this world.” He introduced himself.
“I like that. Inclusion force has a nice ring to it. Welcome, General. I suspect that you have quite a few questions about my actions today, so I will start with a summary.
My city had fifteen Saints break through at the same time, and it caused a massive mana influx, which awakened the latent potential of those present.
So, we’ve got thousands of new magic users in the city, some in their early teens, who have no idea how to control their powers, and many of them are either humans or beastkin, who do best when they use the human magic style from this world for control of their powers.
So, I came and borrowed all the mages I could get my hands on. I promise you that we will keep them, and they won’t continue to be an issue for King Petros.” Wolfe explained.
General Warma laughed. “I’m certain that you mean every word, but taking every Elder Mage that you can find is also an issue. You see, King Petros greatly values the elemental magic of this world, as our people can’t use it with the blessing of the Divine One.
So, taking all the Elders who know the advanced spells away does pose an issue for us, even if they were a royal pain in the ass.”
Wolfe chuckled. “Well, you can always look for Elders among the villages to train more mages. There are bound to be plenty of schools in this world. As I understand it, most of them can use magic to some degree.”
The General nodded. “To some degree, yes. But so few of them make it past Rank One that most of the village teachers are Rank Two Mages, and don’t have a massive spell library.
If my guess is right, the libraries here will be empty of all the accumulated knowledge that we were hoping to get them to share once they stopped being stubborn.”
Wolfe shook his head. “That’s not how it works at all. The real secrets are for their successors and inner circle. I share huge amounts of magical knowledge with my people, in the name of bettering the world, and the best stuff still remains confidential.”
The General gave him a concerned look. “I am quite familiar with some of the things you share with the world. My brother got one of your statues. Yet, you say that the best stuff is still confidential?”
“Would you like to know how to rearrange a continent in an afternoon? Perhaps carve out an entire mountain into an enchanted fortress? Or perhaps, the secret to being able to seduce a Succubus without getting trapped in her hypnotic magic? Those are the sorts of privileged spells that I keep to my closest confidants.”
General Warma smirked, while the other officers nearby slowly blinked at Wolfe. What sort of abilities were those? And didn’t he know they were at war with the Demon Realms, in the name of the Divine One? Why would they? No, he understood the appeal of that one.
“Point taken. While the spells you shared are society shaking, they are not world altering in a literal sense.”
