Chapter 1035: 1035 Pentacle Choices
Wolfe smiled down at Malika, the Snow Leopard beastkin, and noticed that she was among the ones who had been taking the magical training. He could feel the magic in her, but she hadn’t moved to the student dorms, or he would have seen her earlier.
“What made you want to stay in the inner city instead of the dorms? You are in the Academy, right?” Wolfe asked.
Malika smirked at him and her ears perked up. “Actually, I’m not. I’m taking side lessons with David, one of the instructors, but only part-time because I intend to keep working with my mom at the spire.
It’s not easy to get that job, you know? We all fought over who got the best times, and I don’t want to give mine up.”
“No big ambitions to join the ranks of mages and travel around for work?” Wolfe asked.
She shook her head. “Nope, I want to be the next head chef. I’m still young enough that I have a shot at the spot when Cook retires, so that’s what I’m aiming for.
That means I need magic, but not really powerful magic, as Rank One is enough to be a shift head chef, and Rank Two might qualify for Cook’s position, as long as the standards don’t change. It’s more about the culinary skill, and you just need enough magic for the tools and a bit of ingredient tweaking to make your food perfect.
Did you know that a charcoal grilled, and a magically grilled burger do not taste the same? But if you use Earth Magic, you can give that flavour back on a magical grill.”
Wolfe chuckled. “Well, it sounds like you’re on your way to your dream. But what about those girls? They’re part of the Human Candidate team, right?”
Malika checked the ones that Wolfe was talking about and shrugged. “They’re not bad people, they just don’t really have thoughts, you know?”
Wolfe gave her a confused look, so the beastkin continued. “Like, they’re so used to being told what to do that they don’t have any sort of initiative. Which I’m certain will make them very popular options as a wife, but for an Ambassador? I don’t think that they’re ready.”
Wolfe sighed. “Setting the Pentacles so early could be an issue, couldn’t it? They will obviously need training, and they can overcome some issues, but if they’ve all been trained to be shy and demure good girls for their future husbands, we’re not going to really see their own personality right away.
The ones with the most outgoing personalities are easy because they get noticed. But the others are like eggs that haven’t hatched yet.”
Malika’s ears fluffed up in a more excited way than when bullies were mentioned. “You know, we could test them, you know, make them angry or concerned or something and see how they respond.”
Wolfe chuckled. “That was why they’ve been with the other Pentacle members so far. If helping the ladies with their workload isn’t enough to frustrate them, I’m not certain what will be.”
The beastkin girl shrugged. “That’s likely right. You should ask Mary. I heard that she made them dress up to do shows for the daycare, and if that didn’t make them snap, I don’t know what would. Mary is a lot to take in.”
Wolfe laughed. “That’s because you have adorable fluffy ears. You know how Mary is about all things fluffy.”
The next group that they came across was a mixed group of Fae and Humans, which made it look like they were well integrated into Forest Grove society. They were chatting and joking as they shopped with each other. But Malika didn’t look impressed.
“Look over there, the guards watching them. That’s the mean girls squad. They have been accused a few times of shoplifting and while they’re not physically bullying anyone that I know of, they’re nasty and snarky to everyone they think is beneath them.” She explained.
Wolfe handed her a money card and gestured to the shop next to them. “I see a very lovely necklace, will you go over and purchase that for me before someone else snags it?”
He could see that the group had noticed it, but they were still two shops away with other items to browse.
Malika didn’t notice what Wolfe was doing right away, and happily ran off to do his shopping for him. Officially, all major promotions went through Wolfe, and only the Pentacle Members were aware of how many of the changes were actually signed off by one of the original five or his security team.
Wolfe made all the big decisions, they made the little decisions, but Cassie, Ella and Risa were the ones who decided what was a big decision.
He wasn’t going to argue with the system, he had enough left to do with what they had given him, and things were running smoothly.
Malika had made it to the shop now, and she was excitedly explaining to the shopkeeper which item she wanted out of his locked and spell protected case.
That obviously caught the attention of the girls, and they were rushing over.
“Hey Furball, what do you think you’re doing? What would someone like you need with jewels that expensive? You should really leave that to us.” The first one to arrive, a girl who smelled Fae, but looked like a Witch, demanded.
She must be a shape-shifter of some sort, as she looked too much like a Witch for the aura of her mana.
But Malika had forgotten one important fact. You can’t use someone else’s card. They’re linked to the user during the first transaction. So, when the shopkeeper hesitated, preparing to lock the necklace back into the case so it wasn’t snatched during a fight, Wolfe stepped forward.
“I was sent to purchase it as a gift. I don’t care what you think of me, but I have to buy this necklace.” Malika was explaining to the mean girls club.
The Fae gave her a disgusted look, and the human girl behind her took out a card.
“Shopkeeper, how about you process my purchase, and we will head out now with my new necklace?” The human girl asked.
Wolfe stepped out of the crowd, and the shopkeeper immediately looked relieved.
“Is this how Candidates to become Representatives of Forest Grove behave when I’m not watching? I think my personal shopper had already requested the necklace before you arrived.” He asked.
