After a tense few moments of silent confrontation, Rin brought her hand to her mouth, her sharp teeth sinking into her own flesh, piercing the skin and drawing a fresh flow of blood. Gaya, watching the disturbing display, rolled her eyes, her expression a mixture of disgust and weary familiarity.
“Seriously?” she asked, her voice dripping with disdain.
“Do you really need to do all that fucked-up shit just to make people puke in their mouths?”
But Rin offered no verbal response. Instead, she began to change, the transformation a horrifying spectacle unfolding before Gaya’s eyes. Her human form, already unnerving in its sharp beauty, began to contort and distort in unnatural ways. Her spine elongated and arched impossibly, her skin rippling and shifting, taking on a hard, chitinous texture, like the grotesque exoskeleton of some monstrous insect. Her arms multiplied, sprouting from her sides in a disturbing, symmetrical pattern, their movements jerky and unnatural. Her head morphed grotesquely, her delicate features distorting and rearranging themselves, her jaw unhinging to reveal rows upon rows of sharp, pointed teeth. Her hair receded rapidly, vanishing into her skull, leaving behind a smooth, segmented surface.
She grew in size, towering over Gaya, her transformed body now a grotesque parody of life. A centipede-like humanoid thing with far too many arms flailing, a head that was unnervingly large and insectile, and eyes that glowed with a malevolent, sickly green light. Only her legs remained largely unchanged, a disturbing reminder of the beautiful woman she once was, now twisted into this horrific abomination.
But if the rotting flesh and gaping wounds weren’t disturbing enough, the creature began to ooze a thick, viscous, green liquid that dripped from its pores, its grotesque mouth, and its unsettlingly glowing eyes, pooling on the ground beneath it like some toxic sludge. Wherever the vile liquid landed, the earth hissed and bubbled violently, as if consumed by a potent acid.
“Poison,” Gaya snorted, her voice laced with utter disgust.
“How fucking cliché can you get?” She paused, her crimson gaze fixed on the horrific monstrosity before her.
“You wanna play the transformation game, Rin? Fine. Let’s play.”
Her eyes began to glow with a fierce, crimson light that intensified rapidly. Her body shifted and contorted, her human form melting away, replaced by glistening scales, sharp fangs, and a serpentine grace that was both terrifying and mesmerizing to behold. She grew in length and girth, becoming a massive cobra easily twelve feet long, her hood flared wide in a menacing display, her dark purple scales shimmering ominously in the dim light filtering through the shattered canopy. Her thick, powerful tail lashed back and forth against the churned earth, and her eyes, now slit and reptilian, burned with cold, murderous intent.
Michael, watching the familiar transformation unfold, merely raised his eyebrows in a mixture of awe and slight amusement. He’d seen it countless times, of course, but it was still a jarring sight to behold – the knowledge that his wife, the woman he loved, could become such a giant, deadly snake.
The two creatures, two monstrous forces of nature, stared each other down in the ravaged forest, a silent battle of wills preceding the inevitable physical clash. Rin, in her grotesque, newly acquired form, slowly circled Gaya, her movements fluid and eerily silent despite her size, her glowing green eyes never leaving the cobra’s form. Gaya, in turn, mirrored Rin’s movements, her serpentine body coiling and uncoiling with coiled power as her hood flared wide. The menacing sound of her hiss echoed through the shattered trees and the forest.
The Agni-King, now a cherished possession, was coiled safely within the protective curve of Gaya’s tail, shielded from the brutal clash that was about to unfold. Rin, her movements no longer remotely human, lunged at Gaya, her multiple limbs flailing wildly, two of her hands still clutching those wickedly sharp crimson daggers. But Gaya, despite her immense size in her serpentine form, was surprisingly fast and agile. She slithered lithely aside, her dark purple scales shimmering in the dappled light as she narrowly avoided Rin’s initial attack. Retaliating with lightning speed, she struck, her fangs now coated in a deadly, shimmering purple venom, aiming for Rin’s exposed flesh.
Rin, however, was equally quick and parried the venomous strike, her crimson daggers clashing against Gaya’s fangs with a sharp, metallic screech that jarred against the backdrop of the forest. She then reached out with two of her many hands, her fingers digging cruelly into the soft flesh beneath Gaya’s scales, attempting to pry her jaws open. But Gaya hissed in fury, her massive body coiling and uncoiling with immense power, and struck again, this time with the full force of her powerful tail. The impact was devastating. Her tail connected squarely with Rin’s side, the force of the blow sending the centipede-like creature flying backwards, her body crashing through the dense trees, snapping them like brittle twigs under her weight.
Undaunted, Rin carved a path through the uprooted trees, her daggers slicing through wood as if it were butter, turning thick trunks and sturdy branches into showers of splinters. She was fast, a whirlwind of unnatural motion and destruction, and she lunged at Gaya once more, her multiple limbs a terrifying blur of razor-sharp steel and chitinous appendages.
“ARGHH!” Rin roared in pure fury before slashing and kicking with unnatural speed and ferocity. Her movements were erratic and unpredictable.
But Gaya hissed, unleashing a concentrated sound wave, inaudible to human ears, that slammed into the centipede-like creature with the force of a physical blow. Rin staggered back, her unnatural movements faltering for a precious second, the vibrations disrupting her monstrous form.
Then she shrieked, a high-pitched, ear-splitting sound that vibrated in the air and resonated deep within the very bones of anyone unfortunate enough to hear it. As she shrieked, she sprayed a cloud of virulent green poison, a deadly mist erupting from her mouth, her glands, and her very pores, engulfing the immediate area.
In response, Gaya hissed, unleashing a counter-attack that mirrored Rin’s shriek. A stream of her own potent, purple venom, corrosive and deadly, shot from her fangs, meeting Rin’s green poison in mid-air with explosive force. The two toxic substances collided in a burst of yellowish flames that licked at the surrounding vegetation, instantly withering the grass, the flowers, and the trees, leaving the ground blackened and scorched beneath the toxic cloud.
Watching the exchange from a relatively safe distance, Michael instinctively took a step back. He could feel the raw potency of the poisons, the way they burned the air and corroded everything they touched.
“I need to place the tracker on her,” Michael mumbled. Although he had several trackers he built by hand, he bought a tracker from the system to play it safe. He couldn’t risk Rin finding out his tracker. So he bought one from the system. It was a tiny, almost invisible device and he was itching to plant it on Rin. However, he couldn’t rush but needed the right moment.
As the poisonous cloud dissipated, the two combatants were revealed. Rin’s monstrous form was flickering and unstable, but she was faster at this moment, lunging at Gaya with a terrifying burst of speed. But Gaya was ultimately stronger. She coiled her massive body around Rin, her dark purple scales shimmering in the dim light, her powerful muscles constricting, squeezing the air from Rin’s lungs and crushing her bones with agonizing force. Rin thrashed wildly, her multiple limbs lashing out, her crimson daggers slicing through the air, but Gaya’s scales were tough and resilient, deflecting the blows and protecting her serpentine flesh from harm.
“Finish her!” Michael’s voice cut through the sounds of the brutal battle. Gaya, her grip tightening relentlessly around Rin’s convulsing body, opened her massive jaws, her fangs gleaming menacingly in the twin sun’s light, and prepared to deliver the final, lethal strike.
At that moment, Michael saw his chance. He moved, a shadow slipping towards Rin. The tracker, a small metallic disc, felt cool in his palm. He was ready to plant it, seal her fate.
Just as Gaya reared back, about to deliver the killing blow, a blinding red beam speared down from the sky. It slammed into the earth between them with the force of a thunderclap.
Michael threw an arm up, shielding his eyes against the searing light. The impact jolted through the ground, staggering him back. Gaya’s concentration shattered. A frustrated hiss tore from her throat, her grip on Rin loosening almost imperceptibly.
When the crimson glow finally faded, Rin was gone. Vanished without a trace.
“What the fuck was that?” Gaya’s growl vibrated through the ravaged air. Her form shimmered, shifting, and contorting as she returned to her humanoid shape. Scales receded beneath her skin, and her tail shrunk until a tall, powerful woman stood where the monstrous creature had been. The Agni-King, still clutched in her hand, pulsed with crimson light, a slow, menacing beat in the darkness of the forest. The surrounding forest, moments before serene, was now a scene of utter devastation. Trees lay uprooted, their splintered branches scattered like broken bones. The earth itself was scorched, blackened, scarred by fire, and lingering, sickly green patches of poison.
Gaya’s gaze swept across the destruction, finally settling on the patch of ground where Rin had been held. There, etched into the burnt earth, was a mark. A small, charred symbol. A skull, with a stark ‘X’ emblazoned behind it.
“Human, come look at this,” she demanded, her voice tight with a new kind of urgency.
Michael approached cautiously, his eyes glued to the symbol. Recognition flared in his gaze.
“Xyloth,” he muttered.
The God of Murder had intervened. He had plucked his daughter from the jaws of death. And the charred skull was a message. A stark, undeniable warning that they were being watched.
