First Immortal of the Sword

Chapter 1884: Not Alone in the Grand Dao

The old man was ill at ease.

He’d realized that he’d misjudged the situation; the little fish he'd "spared" was more like a mighty dragon forging boldly through turbulent waters. He was actually a powerful sword cultivator!

“Fellow Daoist, might I be so bold as to ask your name?” Su Yi inclined his head in solemn greeting.

The old man’s kindness warranted such treatment.

The old man was instantly frantic. “You… you needn’t be so polite. This old man won’t be able to take it. This humble one has spent his whole life in the wilderness. Others of my kind call me Huang Yun.”

Su Yi took out a jug of wine, as well as the medallion Huang Yun had given him, and passed them to the old man. “Our meeting was a stroke of fate. Please accept these.”

Su Yi then shoved them into the old man’s hands, leaving no room for arguments.

“Alright then. I’d best get going.” Su Yi smiled, bade farewell, and floated into the air, his sleeves billowing around him. In the blink of an eye, he’d disappeared into the boundless night sky.

Huang Yun watched in a daze. Some time passed before he came back to his senses. “Was that perhaps a grand and powerful immortal?”

He thought of immortals as the most extraordinary existences around.

He put the talisman away, then examined the wine. In the end, he couldn’t resist the urge to open the jug. An enticing fragrance instantly wafted into the air. A single sniff was enough to liven up Huang Yun’s vital energy and soothe his heart and mind. He felt as if he were walking on air.

“Is this… perhaps an immortal brew?” Huang Yun’s eyes lit up. He hurriedly put the jug of wine away and left, his heart full of delight.

His experiences tonight seemed like something straight out of a legend. He’d even received an immortal blessing, something that could only be happened upon by chance!

……

Sparse stars dotted the night sky.

A flat boat sailed through the sea of clouds, carrying Su Yi into the distance.

“Fellow Daoist, you’re truly an interesting one,” someone teased him in a voice like the music of the heavens.

A tall, slender beauty in plain hemp clothing appeared accompanying this voice. She floated gently onto the boat. Her hair was casually tied up with a red string, and her eyes were as black as ink. She was a moving beauty.

This was Xi Ning, and she was as extraordinary and ethereal as before. Her beauty was such that heaven and earth dulled by comparison.

“You’re talking about the drink I shared with that little yao?” Su Yi laughed, not at all surprised by Xi Ning’s sudden appearance.

“I am.” Xi Ning’s eyes shone as she took in Su Yi’s handsome, smiling face. “I wouldn’t have guessed you’d laugh and chat with a lowly yao cultivator like him, much less that you’d bequeath him such an enormous stroke of good fortune.”

Su Yi had given Huang Yun a jug of immortal brew, but that wasn’t overly precious. No, the truly precious gift was the medallion. Before Su Yi returned it, he imbued it with an extraordinary power of the Grand Dao.

Su Yi thought nothing of it. “He was kind to me, and even more importantly, his kindness came straight from the heart. It’s only natural that I did him a kindness in turn.”

The power he’d left within the medallion was a portion of his will, imbued into characters full of the mysteries of the Grand Dao.

Seeing me is like seeing the heavens!

If Huang Yun carried the medallion, it would benefit his cultivation enormously, and if he encountered life-threatening danger, it could ensure his safety.

Xi Ning was moved. From a young age, her grandfather had taught her to act unto others as she would have them act unto her, and to act with kindness without regard for rewards or gratitude. After seeing what Su Yi had done today, she felt she’d finally found someone like-minded.

“That Luo Tiandu guy isn’t here with you?” Su Yi asked with a laugh.

Luo Tiandu had left quite an impression on him.

As soon as he and Xi Ning left the ruins of the Dragon Palace, they encountered this unparalleled divine son. He and Su Yi went on to have a thoroughly satisfying clash of the Grand Dao. Furthermore, they agreed that the next time they met, they’d determine life and death!

The reason for this was simple. Luo Tiandu saw him as a must-kill target, and not even Xi Ning could dissuade him. Meanwhile, Su Yi didn’t feel particularly strongly about this. If anything, he was looking forward to it.

“He…” Xi Ning furrowed her brow in exasperation. “When I went looking for you, he wanted to come with me, but I refused. After all, I’d really hate for you to hurt each other.”

Su YI laughed. “What’s there to worry about? I agreed not to kill him if I won, didn’t I?”

Xi Ning blinked. “But what if you lose?”

Su Yi instantly understood. Xi Ning was worried about his safety!

He thought for a moment, then said, “You’re not here to discourage me from participating in the Immortal Peach Assembly, are you?”

Just three days remained until the appointed time, yet now, here Xi Ning was. There was undoubtedly a connection.

But against Su Yi’s expectations, Xi Ning shook her head. “No, I’m just here because I wanted to tell you in person that numerous divine children have set their sights on the Immortal Peach Assembly.”

Su Yi had actually anticipated that. After all, they knew that he was the “Heretic Reincarnator,” the one the gods could not tolerate!

Xi Ning continued, “But most of them have agreed not to make an appearance at the Immortal Peach Assembly unless you lose.”

Su Yi was stunned. “You’re saying that if I win, they won’t attack me?”

“That’s right.” Xi Ning inclined her head. “This is all I can do for you.”

Su Yi’s heart shook as he realized that Xi Ning was behind the divine children’s promise!

There was no doubt about it. She’d known with certainty that he’d be attending the Immortal Peach Assembly, so she’d taken action well in advance, drawing on her power and influence to convince the divine children to promise not to take action!

Su Yi couldn’t help but feel startled—and flattered. He sighed, “You didn’t need to go to all that trouble. After all, now, all those guys from the God Domain know that you’re on my side. If they target you…”

Xi Ning smiled and raised a hand to stop him. “You aren’t afraid to attend the Immortal Peach Assembly, so how could I be afraid of all that?”

The sea of clouds churned, and the night was dark as ink. She sat at the tail of the boat, unparalleled and ethereal, so beautiful that Su Yi’s heart shook.

Few could withstand a beauty’s benevolence. Nothing left a greater impression than her passing glance.

In the end, Su Yi smiled. “Those who know me ask about my concerns, while those who don’t assume I’m seeking something. I was truly fortunate to have met you in my pursuit of the Grand Dao, Fellow Daoist.”

He meant every word.

Xi Ning was stunned, and she suddenly looked a bit uncomfortable. Finally, she whispered, “I’ve long since taken you for a like-minded individual, a companion in my pursuit of the Grand Dao.”

The atmosphere was suddenly a bit strange and inscrutable.

Su Yi understood the feeling, but he didn’t want to ruin it. He just smiled and said, “When I return from the Immortal Peach Assembly, I’ll be sure to invite you for a drink to express my gratitude.”

Xi Ning thought for a moment, then said, “Fellow Daoist, don’t get over-confident. Although most of the divine children have agreed not to get directly involved, they can still send their divine emissaries to act on their behalf.”

“Divine emissaries?” said Su Yi. “Are you referring to those old-timers confined during the Primeval Era?”

Xi Ning was stunned. She exclaimed, “You knew about them, Fellow Daoist?”

“I saw some of them with my own eyes in the Eastern Sea,” said Su Yi. “I immediately guessed that there were similar divine prisons in the forty-nine provinces of the Immortal Realm.”

Xi Ning nodded. “It’s just as you’ve surmised, Fellow Daoist. The captive divine emissaries are distributed throughout the Immortal Realm, and not even I know just how many of them there are. What I can say with certainty is that over the next few years, more and more divine emissaries will appear by the divine children’s sides.

“That goes for Luo Tiandu, too. After I left the ruins of the Dragon Palace, Luo Tiandu and I went to the Elephant Province to open a long-sealed prison and release the captive divine emissaries. They once served a god from Luo Tiandu’s clan, and they’re now Luo Tiandu’s subordinates.”

Su Yi felt enlightened, but a moment later, he asked, “And what about you?”

“My ancestor is from the Immortal Realm. How could I possibly order denizens of the Immortal Realm about like slaves?” asked Xi Ning. “Besides, I don’t need anyone else’s help.”

Su Yi nodded.

Xi Ning suddenly changed the subject. “These threats aside, you need to be on guard against Qing Xiao, Jin Zhuliu, and the others. They suffered a crushing defeat at your hands in the Dragon Palace, and it’s highly likely that they’ll make an appearance at the Immortal Peach Assembly. That aside…”

Here, Xi Ning’s delicate eyebrows furrowed. “Not long ago, Luo Tiandu told me that some of the gods seem agitated, and apparently, they’ll be sending a group of powerful experts into the Immortal Realm before the Path of Divinity appears.

“I can say with certainty that these experts will include the Dipankara Buddha’s subordinate, the Temple Guardian Arhat Jia Yun, as well as Huo Jianfeng, one of the Four Sons of the Dao of the Three Purities Daoist Court, and Wenren Qingyu, the unparalleled divine daughter of the Fire Domain’s Wenren Family. They could appear in the Immortal Realm at any time!”

Jia Yun, Huo Jianfeng, and Wenren Qingyu!

To Su Yi, these were three entirely unfamiliar names. He had no idea what they represented.

But for Xi Ning to solemnly introduce them one by one was unquestionable proof that these were no ordinary divine children!

Su Yi asked with great interest, “How do they compare with Luo Tiandu?”

Xi Ning mulled that over, then said, “In terms of both their backgrounds and their abilities, they’re on about the same level as him. They’re all worthy of the title ‘unparalleled.’”

She paused, then said, “Qing Xiao, Jin Zhuliu, and their ilk are a notch inferior. Old Man Providence’s disciple, Gu Yunchan, is on about the same level as Jia Yun, Huo Jianfeng, and Wenren Qingyu.”

The mention of Gu Yunchan cleared up Su Yi’s doubts. He immediately nodded in understanding.

“So that’s it. I see. Well, then you shouldn't worry too much…”

“I... what?!” Xi Ning was stunned.

But before she could say anything else, Su Yi laughed. “Gu Yunchan and Qing Wu died by hand in the Eastern Sea.”

This casual admission was like a sudden thunderclap on a clear day. Xi Ning’s heart shook, her eyes widened, and she fell into a daze.
