Lailah had stopped trying to keep track of time in the prison realm. It was simply too impractical.
Even counting seconds felt impossibly drawn out. Lailah would try to count to ‘one’ and sometimes, her brain felt like she had been counting for an hour. Others, it felt like three days.
It made the usually cool and collected goddess feel anxious.
She didn’t like not knowing how long it had been since they’d been away. Her fear was that she would come back to her life and find her young children all grown up.
But Lailah was a much different woman now compared to when she was nineteen.
Her response to fear wasn’t to panic or display timidity.
It was to be angry.
“Answer me!!”
Lailah’s magic was back, though not in it’s full capacity. However, it still seemed to be enough to make her enemies very uncomfortable.
She cast spells hundreds at a time. She rained down magical power on the heads of her enemies like a vengeful goddess.
Denizens of the dark realm screeched loudly as they were assailed by magic as powerful as it was beautiful.
The only thing louder than their screams was the sound of Lailah’s chilling voice.
“If you’re hoping to play on my soft heart, I can assure you that it’s already in pieces. Your suffering only ends when you tell me where the twin blasphemies are!”
Lailah’s cruelty was double-layered.
Just as she was having a hard time navigating the realm, those born here have an equally difficult time.
What is the use in understanding maps, directions, or topography in a realm that’s constantly shifting and doesn’t allow you to trace your steps?
The denizens of the world could never give her the answers that she was seeking. And since Lailah could not so easily kill them without Lillian, she confined them to what felt like endless torture.
“My love… We should go.”
Eris wasn’t unaware of Lailah’s ruthless streak. And seeing it usually didn’t bother her this much.
But maybe it was because Lailah was being cruel without reason this time around.
Eris placed a gentle hand on her shoulder to hopefully calm her down. She didn’t know if she was imagining things or not, but for a moment, it didn’t seem like her lover softened at her touch.
Had she been this angry the whole time, and Eris just hadn’t realized it…?
“…Let’s go.”
Lailah shut down her spells and sat down once again. The nameless horror carrying them lurched forward past its charred kin.
Like a spider, it crawled up a large wall while leaving it’s half-dead brethren behind.
With their journey resumed, Eris made her way over to Lailah and sat underneath her. Her deer legs shifted into human ones so that she could fit herself neatly into her wife’s coils.
She was pleased to see that Lailah hadn’t pulled away from her. If that were to happen… she didn’t know how she would have felt.
“I… feel like we haven’t talked properly for some time.”
Lailah’s response was different than what Eris had expected.
“That may not be wholly accurate… time here is so hard to differentiate that we could just be imagining things.”
Eris pursed her lips. “I’m not imagining this. You haven’t spoken to me for some time.”
Lailah only met her words with more silence in return.
Going on these separate journeys was harder than they had anticipated.
For a time, everyone kept in contact even if they couldn’t see each other. It was like one big group chat in their heads at all times.
It was fun at first. Especially with so many humerus individuals among them.
But as they grew to miss each other’s physical presence, talking to each other telepathically just made the longing more intense.
It was no different than being on a diet and having someone dangle cake in your face.
The conversations started to lessen all at once. Too many ‘I miss you’s and ‘I’m thinking of you’s’ had threatened to wear down their resolve.
And this was far too important for them to consider turning back now.
So they stopped talking as much. If only so that their eventual reunion would be all the sweeter.
But Eris hadn’t anticipated that Lailah would stop talking to her, too.
Was it because she was a constant reminder of something she couldn’t have, or had Eris actually done something to earn this cold shoulder…?
“Are you… upset with me?” Eris asked quietly.
Lailah seemed caught off guard by the sudden question, and she wrapped her hand in Eris’ for the first time in a long time.
“No, I’m just… having a hard time.”
“Are you worried about the others..?”
“Of course I am…”
“I told you all, we’ll find each other again. There’s nothing strong enough to keep us apart forever.” Eris said firmly.
“Yes, but how do you know that…?” Lailah’s voice cracked. Dismay had started to erode away her anger. “How many years will we spend searching for the twin blasphemies, and how many more will we spend trying to find each other? This realm does not give us what we want on purpose…!”
Eris bit her lip awkwardly. It was hard to see someone you loved in this state.
Lailah’s mind was usually an impregnable iron wall, but too much accumulated anxiety had started her on the path to crumbling.
And Eris didn’t truly know how she could pull her back from this. Her only option was what she always went with. Sincerity.
“I just… need you to trust in us- trust in me. Our love is greater than any realm, stronger than any force that would keep us apart. Just as we came together before, we can do so again. Distance will not hinder us.”
Lailah looked down at the woman in her lap. She placed her hand on Eris’ cheek and seemed to be staring at her with a sad gaze.
“…Have you always been such a hopeless optimist?”
Eris smiled at her. “In this life..? Yes, I have. When I have all that I could have ever wanted, what reason could I possibly have to not believe that things will always be bright and sunny?”
“And if they are not..?”
“Then they will not be that way for long. I’m sure of it.”
Eris passed her fingers over the lower part of Lailah’s face.
A pair of full, dark lips formed where there was once nothing, and Eris didn’t waste a second in reaquainting herself with them.
For a moment, Lailah did try to pull away.
She didn’t want to become reacquainted with this softness. This warmth.
Not when she couldn’t have it fully.
But Eris held her firm, and seemingly with no care for their current setting.
If anything, she seemed to be trying to impart a feeling of hopefulness into her loved one.
Lailah hated that it was actually working on her.
The sensation was sweet enough that Lailah wanted to cry. Soon, she stopped fighting Eris’ embrace and instead leaned further into it.
Their truest divine states didn’t have any sexual organs, but Eris still touched her where they would have been on instinct.
That finally prompted Lailah to pull away firmly.
Eris could only smile wryly.
“Too much..?”
Lailah nodded as she wiped the shared drool from her lip. “J-Just a little bit, love…”
“But it was nice though, right?”
“A-A little too much so…”
Eris giggled as if that had been exactly what she was going for.
While she stared at her, Lailah was in deep thought of her own.
Her mind was spinning again, and she had so many questions that she needed to know the answers to. If only to prevent herself from going absolutely insane.
“Eris, there’s… something I need to ask you and-“
Abruptly, they were interrupted by two voices they almost didn’t believe.
“Boooo! No talkin’, get back to kissing!”
“Personally, I was hoping for more hand stuff.”
“You’re such a fucking degenerate, can’t you appreciate a good romantic buildup for just a couple of seconds…?”
“No? I don’t understand all that sentimental shit humanity is into. I just like to see them lick each other’s butts.”
“I don’t think they’re human, though?”
“Are you sure? All these bipeds look the same to me.”
“Think, moron. Why would that bearded old guy start locking up his favorite creations in here? This place sucks.”
“‘Because they’re twats.”
“Well, obviously, but he’s never given a shit before, so I doubt he’d start doing so now.”
“….Okay, I guess that makes sense. You’re so smart, Nug.”
“I know I am, Yeb.”
Lailah and Eris slowly pulled away from each other. M|V|LEM*PYR is the home of this chapter
They looked up at the edge of a cliff where two distinct creatures were floating in the air.
Their appearances were that of masses of green slime that looked like a bundle of boogers with eyes all over.
Their large mouths hung open constantly and always seemed to spout a mix of obscenities and crude nonsense.
Lailah and Eris almost couldn’t believe what they were looking at.
“…Why are they staring at us like that?”
“We’re good-looking.”
“That… actually makes perfect sense. How’s it going, ladies?? My brother and I don’t have any sexual organs, but if you want, then-“
“KILL THEM!” Lailah roared.
She and Eris bolted from their mount and flung themselves at each of the twins.
Only now did they begin to think that something was amiss.
“T-They don’t look super happy to see us…”
“No, they really don’t..”
“S-So we should-“
“Yep- run.”
