Chapter 1681: Chapter 1680: Speechless

Qiao Xiaomai watched his expression closely and couldn’t help grinding her teeth. “If she’s not just a mere mortal, if she really is Gu Yu’s wife, given her connection with Tong Sanlang, do you think she wouldn’t come to save me?”

“Careful, she might suddenly jump out and slap you to death!”

Bei Yun burst out laughing. “I’m really not afraid. Ever since the first time the poison attacked me after I was born, I’ve been prepared to die at any moment. I don’t fear death. Living is a punishment for me; this world is my hell. Death would actually be my release.”

“What I’m most curious about right now is her—more curious than about war or explosives combined. If she really does jump out and satisfy my curiosity, then I’ll die without regrets.”

Qiao Xiaomai: “…”

This conversation can’t go on anymore.

Not knowing martial arts can get you killed.

If I’d known earlier, I would’ve learned a thing or two from Tong Sanlang.

Bei Yun saw her go silent and then lowered his head to study the Divine Crossbow again.

Qiao Xiaomai shrank into the corner of the carriage, wrapping the blanket around herself tightly. For the moment, the only sounds left in the carriage were the whistling breeze and the clatter of horses’ hooves and the grinding of the wheels.

Bei Yun studied the crossbow for two hours straight. The night pearl was no match for candlelight, and the carriage was too dark, leaving some areas hard to see clearly.

He put the Divine Crossbow down and pulled out a thin blanket from a hidden compartment in the carriage, then closed his eyes and went to sleep.

Only after he fell asleep did Qiao Xiaomai dare to close her eyes. She covered her face with the blanket and curled her whole body beneath it.

If not for the fact there were more than two hundred masters outside, she really would’ve made a move against Bei Yun…

And she had no idea what Tong Sanlang was doing now. He must be worried sick, but with the lessons from before, he wouldn’t dare recklessly chase after her alone.

Bei Lingsu had been poisoned. Once Bei Lingsu woke up, Tong Sanlang would probably join him in pursuit. The carriage was running so fast, day and night without stopping—could Bei Lingsu and Tong Sanlang even catch up?

The carriage jolted violently, her mind was in a chaotic mess, and she couldn’t sleep. Soon, dawn broke.

The light snow stopped, the sun rose, but the winter sun was just for show—it didn’t provide any warmth, and the weather remained bitterly cold.

Bei Yun’s group didn’t pause for rest. They pulled out rock-hard biscuits and cold chicken for breakfast.

Qiao Xiaomai’s breakfast was the same. She wasn’t hungry at all, but to maintain her strength, she forced herself to pick up a biscuit. As she was about to bring it to her mouth, she suddenly stopped. “There’s no poison in this, is there?”

“Your words insult my poison skills. I wouldn’t use such a clumsy method to administer poison,” Bei Yun said, sounding mildly annoyed.

Qiao Xiaomai lowered her gaze, said nothing, and silently nibbled on the biscuit.

The biscuit was cold, hard, and completely tasteless. She barely managed to finish one and washed it down with half a bamboo tube of water. Soon after, Bei Yun ordered a stop so everyone could take care of their personal needs.

He strung up a piece of cloth between three trees to create a makeshift toilet. “I won’t peek. Your personality’s too fiery—most of the time I don’t even think of you as a woman.”

Qiao Xiaomai: “…”

Goddamn it!

She angrily resolved nature’s call and followed Bei Yun back onto the carriage.

The journey continued non-stop until nightfall, when they briefly stopped again to deal with personal matters, before resuming travel yet again.

In the ancient wilderness, there was nothing but trees everywhere. Bei Yun wasn’t traveling the official road, and Qiao Xiaomai had no clear memory of Daqi’s map, so she had no idea where they were heading.

She’d thought about leaving behind secret markers, but Bei Yun’s men were completely paranoid—incredibly twisted, even. After every toilet stop, Bei Yun’s men would inspect the area thoroughly, ensuring she hadn’t left any traces.
