Chapter 656: What is the truth? - Part 4

Noah had not missed any expression on his grandfather's face after he had thrown the explosive question at the old man. Albeit subtle, he had seen his countenance change and Noah felt his heart drop in despair. He felt betrayed and lost and most of all, he felt his soul escaping from his body. This was the worst truth ever and he did not know how to face it.

The one thing Noah was excellent at was reading expressions and his grandfather had shown him the truth that he so badly wanted to deny. Instead of being confused at his question, his grandfather had shown signs of being terrified and it only proved that somewhere Oliver had been right all along. His grandfather was somehow involved with Charles and Jared and he did have a hand in the crimes.

"What's Mission Code X? Is that a new project our company is handling? What is it about?"

Jonathan's words only served to prove that he was lying. If he had at least accepted that he knew a thing or two about the Mission, Noah would have believed him. His grandfather was resourceful and Oliver's matter had become a huge issue three years ago. So, it would not have been a wonder that his grandfather knew about it.

However, the man had lied to him blatantly and to Noah, it was as good as him accepting that he knew about the Mission well and good and he was involved in it as Oliver stated. His face paled and he felt suffocated all of a sudden. It was too much of a horrifying shock for him. The man who he worshipped had turned out to be a monster.

Noah did not have not absolute evidence against his grandfather. But after meeting him, his heart told him that the man was guilty and Oliver had been right all along. Jonathan Carter was a demon and he had idolized the wrong man all his life.

Even though he felt betrayed and heartbroken, he did not show his true emotions and tried to appear as calm as possible, not giving away his actual predicament to the old man.

'I cannot give myself away and destroy the plan Oliver has come up with. I cannot allow Jonathan Carter to escape from his crimes. He needs to get what he deserves." Noah let out a mocking smile.

How ironic the situation had turned out to be!! He was fighting and looking for the culprit when the real culprit was lying in his own family. His worldly views had turned upside down in just one day and it took Noah a long time to come to terms with it.

Noah had lost all the respect he had for his grandfather and he even started to loathe himself for being the man's grandson. The truth was poison to him, one that was killing him from within slowly.

"I see." Noah smiled sardonically and Jonathan was too distracted to notice the change in his countenance and tone.

"No, grandpa." Noah stopped and held himself back from killing the old man in a fit of his anger. The man deserved a painful death, not an easy one and Noah made a vow to give the old man a miserable death for breaking his trust. "I came across this Mission in one of the reference files and I thought that you would know a thing or two about it. I must be mistaken." He lied conveniently and Jonathan did not doubt him whatsoever.

"I see. Maybe, one of our branch companies did work on such a project. I do not remember." Jonathan lied, not realizing that Noah had seen through all his lies and was now plotting ways to find his actual truth and how exactly was he involved with Charles and Jared.

"Why are you asking me about it, Noah?" Is something the matter?"

Noah noticed his grandfather's keen expression and he sneered in his mind. 'Look at you getting all worried, Jonathan Carter. Do not worry, old man. I will not expose you right away. You need to face the consequences of your actions and also my wrath. To defend you, I even hurt Oliver and Aria.' As soon as thought about Aria, Noah felt a pang in his heart and his hatred for his grandfather intensified.

"Not exactly, grandpa." Noah still did not give away his predicament and maintained a smile. "Joshua recently came across this Mission when he was helping Ivy in her job and was asking me about it. I even found a reference file but it did not have much information. I wanted to know just what exactly this Mission Code X was." Noah continued to put up a facade, fooling his grandfather brilliantly. "It seems Ivy came across a lead and it was somehow related to Mission Code X. I was just wondering if you had any idea about it."

"I see." Jonathan continued to put up an act. "Well then, I am sorry. I am of no use to you."

"Not a problem, grandpa. Joshua will find out more. I am sure he will be able to help Ivy with her work." Noah again scrutinized the old man and saw him going into a trance immediately. He had laid the bait and the old man had taken it.

Even though he was heartbroken, he was still in his sane mind and had thought of a plan to lure his grandfather to reveal the truth himself. The first step of his plan had been executed and he needed to make sure that his grandfather stayed in the dark until he had him exactly where he wanted him to be.

"And grandpa, I have something else to discuss too." Noah did not leave just like that lest the old man suspected him.

"Ohh...what is it about?"

"Rachel's marriage," Noah remembered what he had promised his sister and smiled widely, for once pushing aside his unhappiness.

"What? Why are you talking about her marriage?" Jonathan was successfully pulled out his thoughts and he gave Noah a curious look.

"Do you not think it's high time she got married, grandpa?"

"Noah..." Jonathan narrowed his eyes and observed his grandson and tilted his head when a thought entered his mind. "Do you know something that I do not know?"

"What do you think?"

"Who is the man?"

"Do you not know who it is, grandpa? Would you have allowed Rachel to be around him if you did not know who it was?"

Jonathan was not embarrassed at being caught. In his muddled state, he had utterly forgotten that he once met Daniel when Rachel had been at the hospital and had been impressed by him.

"I am fine with this alliance." Jonathan smiled widely and Noah nodded immediately.

"Great. I will speak to Mom and Dad about it. We might soon need to start preparing for Rachel's wedding." Noah stood up and buttoned his suit.

"I am going to leave now, grandpa. I still have some things to attend to."

Jonathan nodded at him absent-mindedly and Noah examined him for a moment more before he departed from the mansion, leaving the old man to handle his dreadful thoughts.
