D.E.M.O.N.S: Getting Summoned Weekly isn't so Bad
Chapter 1730: Callisto Protocol Part 3--- Kat ---
"Urgh… and then we next had to deal with Xiang again. That was a complicated mess and it took AGES as well. Unlike the tournament days that are all pretty packed this was just a lot of travelling. It's almost certainly the longest contract I ever did and I think only the most recent mission to 'kill the drake' was longer. Though, I suppose it's worth considering that it was more like two missions glued together," sighed Kat.
Shaking her head for a moment before realising that she was meant to be sitting still Kat continued to explain. "There were a lot of cool moments at least… but yeah it was a bit grating at times. Xiang and his not-girlfriend were annoying. Xiang at least had cleaned up his act a lot and ended up apologising and just generally being more accepting because he needed our help for something more important then revenge…
"At the same time. I was not expecting the 'jealous girlfriend' routine from someone who wasn't even his girlfriend. It got better once she realised that Lily and I were dating and that neither of us were interested in men at all… but it wasn't perfect.
"Aside from that? There was that time Lily killed a magical bear. That's the first thing she really defeated on her own and that was cool. Sort of wish we'd kept a bit of it as a trophy or something to remember the moment by but neither of us were thinking about it at the time. Probably because of all those issues with the giant snake. It was a massive pain to kill and then move…
"Then there was the fact that I had to kill someone. I looked them in the eyes and killed them. It was… weird. I'd gotten close to killing people before, and there's a good chance that they bled out at some point… but that was the first moment I was really confronted with the fact that I could and would just kill people that were in my way. Not if I didn't have to be…
"Well she made a compelling case for 'death before dishonour' and didn't hesitate at any point in the fight. Perhaps if she was a different kind of fighting I would've left her alive but… she genuinely seemed to think it was the best option and well… I don't exactly feel bad about it even now.
"I feel worse about the fact I didn't mind killing her. I still wonder what that means for me going forward. Question if I'm like that because I'm a demon or if I was always going to react like this to death and stuff you know?" pondered Kat.
Callisto shrugged. "I personally suspect that based on things you have already told me you were unlikely to have issues even before this. I base this mostly on things you have said about Kamiko rather then things you have revealed about your own past. Though I suppose it is possible you were always like this because you are a non-dem but there is no real way to test that and if true it still means you have not changed and were always like this."
"I'm not sure that makes me feel any better," grumbled Kat."It was not supposed to. Or at least, that was not my primary purpose in sharing that information with you. I am not Vivian. I simply do not know how to properly comfort you. I am more interested in providing perspective that will either help now or make it less likely that some new revelation in the future will cause issues by bringing those things into the now," stated Callisto.
Kat glared back and decided to just move on. "Right! Well, after that I had the mission with Sue. Protect some dude while he heads off for a tournament. Nothing too crazy. Except I got embroiled in a bunch of spy shit. Not sure how happy Bodeir Sr was with us looking back on it. Like we got praised for it and rewarded but… eh not sure. At least looking after Junior wasn't an issue. Just a few late nights.
"Wasn't anywhere near as long as the other one. A few days travel, a few days for the tournament, that one big fight and then that's it. Lily and I even had Sue to keep us company. Which… that was fine. She's definitely a friend at this point though at the time she was… probably more of an acquaintance? Though I do appreciate the fact she's aiming to improve herself now.
"But ergh. What I mess. I guess the most interesting part about that mission was the spy stuff. Where Meng and 'Bang' were both secretly spies and because we'd become friends with Bing we ended up getting dragged into their family drama. I have no idea how that's going to turn out in the future but at least I can say Meng wasn't a bad mother. A bad person maybe but not a bad mother,"
"Yes… that was an interesting set of circumstances. It still surprises me that Meng could be so strong and yet still have people sitting above her in an organisation. I suppose it is partly due to the fact I have never seen all of this magic but she sounded quite powerful in the retellings," said Callisto.
"Yeah she was, and a great spy too. I mean… it sounded like she was at least. Nobody had caught onto the fact she was a spy for well over a decade and if it wasn't for me seeing through her illusions or the fact her organisation getting ready to cause her trouble it's quite possible that nobody would've ever found out. I'm not sure if that would've been for the best. Feng would probably be happier not knowing at least…" Kat mumbled.
"Happier until he found out some other way you mean?" offered Callisto. Enjoy more content from My Virtual Library Empire
"Eh… do you think Meng would've told them if she didn't have to?" asked Kat.
"Hmmm… a fair question. Without meeting the woman, I cannot say one way or the other. Though meeting her likely would not change that uncertainty. It depends on what she considers most important and as a spy 'most important' can be rather flexible. She might not value the truth at all, and it is clear at least one of her children sees her as a real mother despite the way she entered their lives and the other… does not," stated Callisto.
"How do you think you'd have reacted? I'm… really not sure what my response would be if something like that happened. I never knew my real parents and Gramps was obviously not my dad so…" Kat finished with a shrug.
"It depends. If I found out my parents had been replaced I would likely still dislike them and perhaps hate them more but that was not your question. I find it hard to picture because of my poor relationship with my parents. It is hard to imagine loving someone like that and then picturing a response a reveal like that would generate. I am simply too far removed from such an extreme situation," explained Callisto.
"Well… with us both stumped I suppose we could go over the most recent tournament stuff?" offered Kat.
"If you desire. Your recent excursion into saving the world did take some time after all. While Thyme's Island Vacation Tournament was the most recent it has been some weeks. My memory is good enough to have made note of all of your adventures. Remember this was to see what YOU consider important. I do not need a general summary," explained Callisto.
"Hmm… guess I sort of forget that a bit… eh but at the same time a lot of interesting stuff DID happen. Which, well, talking about interesting stuff I guess Marigold actually has to end up front an centre? She talked about a lot of interesting things… and a lot of mortifying ones as well. She was just… she was very much a character.
"It makes me wonder how much of it is real. Obviously it's not completely fake, but… 'how real' is a different question. Like… is this just how she is when relaxed but it's not what she's like all the time? Or maybe that IS how she is and I don't want to believe it because of how extreme she is?"
"From what I have heard I consider it to be quite close to her truth self. Though that is a guess based more on how her team treats her antics. There would likely be a lot less grudging acceptance if they knew it was all an act that she was just playing up for the tournament. Plus… if her training for regenerating her brain is factual that is… an EXTREME dedication to an act," said Callisto.
Kat shivered. "Yeah that… that's pretty extreme. I hope I don't have to test how my own regeneration will deal with something like that. Even for me that's… more than a bit extreme. Of course… it's very useful to know…"
"Lily would be very upset," stated Callisto, with a sharp clip to her tone implying that she would be upset as well.
