Code Zulu Alpha: Nerd in the Apocalypse!

Chapter 1367: Trouble In The Mainland - I’ll pay for it.

Long story short, let’s just say that the fucking runt, Eikiji, had sticky fingers— no, he had a penchant for taking things that weren’t his, and it could range from a lollipop, a shiny lighter, or even a toy earring to a stupid watch, a half-eaten burrito, or an expensive coin.

What I’m trying to say was, the little runt was a bit of a kleptomaniac and I swear to fucking god that I hope he hadn’t stolen precious resources or nuclear codes.

Still, I was kind of impressed that he could slip in and out without getting caught physically—because he was on the place’s CCTVs and the picture I saw last time—and right at this moment, he was assumed a child’s ghost or something along those lines.

However, I was sure that his mean streak would have its end and I wouldn’t want the Kadena Airbase and the Yamamoto Family to be at odds since they were that close to each other. While it wasn’t confirmed that he was the kid stealing shit from them, there’s a huge chance that he was so I tried to smooth things off from my end and benefit a little bit from it:

"Umm… So yeah… What did he take from you guys? Like, specifically? Assuming the kid really took it and it wasn’t a rogue soldier or civilian pilfering shit from your stock."

[Haa… You’re right, it could be anyone, really… But everyone lost something be it the soldiers, the refugees, and yeah, even the Commander lost one of his medals. Everyone’s up at arms and that kid is the only one who hadn’t filed a missing item report. Though it’s not like he can do it, right? Assuming he’s even real, which I’m starting to believe he’s half and half, heh.]

"That fucker— I mean, who did this pretty much have a deathwish, huh?"

[That is true…]

"You don’t sound that miffed though."

[Heh, I guess I’m kind of lucky since the only thing that kid took from me was my lighter. I am trying to quit smoking and I guess it’s the first step in the right direction? If I look at it the other way.]

"Hmm~ That’s a good way to put it but yeah, if you have a list of somewhat irreplaceable things that got stolen, I might be able to help you guys a little bit. Not to shoulder the burden for that kid but I just want to make a good impression. Even for that Jizz-O dude, I know he’s pissed but he shouldn’t be taking his frustrations on other people, ya know?"

[Ah~ I mean— He just lost his wedding ring and his wife’s still fucking mad at him for it, so…]

"Ah. I think I understand now…"

’Dammit… That’s why he’s acting that way… Shit… Still doesn’t excuse the fact though

[Heh, but he really shouldn’t have talked to you in that way. I mean— the Admiral sung you praises and he literally told us that we’d be put in disciplinary action if we ever slight you. Personally, I’m more excited about the thing you’ll do in this place since the Admiral told us you have that thing you do.]

"Thing I do?"

[Huh? You tell me, it’s the thing you do, don’t you? Anyway, if you’re really keen on replacing some of the items that got stolen, it’d just make everyone here like you that much but if anything, booze just fixes everything. What are you planning to bring with you anyway?]

"You’re okay with any type of alcoholic drink?"

[Look, we’re not total alcoholics here but it does help get us some good sleep, you know?]

"Alright, I promise to bring booze and whatever I can scrounge up from the list you’d be sending me soon. I don’t guarantee that it’d be the same but I’ll try my best. In the meantime, can you tell me a little bit of information on the situation from your side? I’d love to get a glimpse of it, if you don’t mind."

At that point, Lieutenant gave me a quick rundown of what was it like on their end—and like what the Admiral was doing with Hawaii, Okinawa—the City, not the whole Prefecture—was turned into an evacuation center that was currently housing a fraction of its original population which was around ten thousand people.

Because when the nukes hit several parts of Japan, Okinawa was one of the islands spared and it became one of the places people from the mainland flocked to—despite it facing the same problems everyone else had.

One of the reasons for that was because the place was even smaller than our current island group in the Philippines, Luzon, and the population density over there was much smaller because in comparison, the whole prefecture numbered around 1.5 million while ours numbered 64 million.

In addition, the City of Okinawa in the Prefecture of Okinawa had somewhere around 100 thousand people in total while the Barangay we were in had already around 200 thousand—and the City of Valenzuela had somewhere around 700 thousand before the world ended.

In any case, those ten thousand or so people weren’t the total number of people living in the Okinawan Prefecture because there were people who chose to live on their own—and in unfortunate circumstances, broke off with the military group to either become raiders or pursue a rumored area which was told to be safer up North.

"What’s so important up there?"

[I’m not sure. The only places I’ve heard of is either Ie Island or Kouri Island because they’re isolated.]

"Doesn’t matter if it’s isolated or not. If the your place goes down the dead and the living would still find their way over there."

[Exactly my point. It’s not like this place was the same when it started. We found our groove a few months in and we’re having more trouble with the living than the dead. I could only say much compared to the mainland.]
