Chapter 95: Vice-Leader

After leaving the office, Colin walked alongside Jayce to the main square of the city. “What are we doing next?” Colin asked, turning to Jayce.

“I need to get the whole faction together. Although we’re a part of Bastion, I want to lead Hell’s Kitchen myself.” Jayce said matter-of-factly.

Colin nodded, he much preferred that scenario anyway. After being lead by Jayce for so long, he couldn’t imagine taking orders from anyone else, even if it was only temporary. “Should I go gather them?” he asked.

“You can send an alert out via the faction menu.” Jayce mentioned. He had seen the function before when he was trying to figure out a way to upgrade its level.

“Surely only leaders can do that.” Colin replied, unconvinced.

Jayce stared at him dully, “Yes… Which means considering you’re the vice-leader, you can use it too.”

Colin’s mouth widened at the revelation, “I-I’m the vice-leader?” he stammered in disbelief.

Resisting the urge to facepalm, Jayce nodded. He didn’t explicitly tell Colin that he had named him the vice-leader, mostly because he had thought that it was a natural thing. Whenever they traveled in a party, he always acted as his capable right hand man, allowing him to focus on important matters.

Just as he was about to reiterate to Colin about sending out the message, he saw the big man staring into the sky in silence, tears glistening in the sunlight. He recoiled in fright, ’W-What the hell? Is he crying?’

“Ahem. O-Of course I’m the vice-leader. I mean, who else has the authority and capability of yours truly.” After quickly composing himself, Colin puffed out his chest like a peacock who was showing off, his words sounding empty, yet full of false bravado.

Jayce didn’t know whether to laugh or cry, seeing the weird scene in front of him. It was clear that the sentiment meant a lot to him, so he decided not to pick on the big man for now. “Yes yes, you’re very capable. Have everyone meet in the central square in an hour. Also bring Macie and Heath.”

“Why would you want them to come along?” He asked curiously.

“Don’t underestimate those two.” Jayce replied, a hint of mystery hidden beneath his tone. With those words, he turned and left, leaving the big man with a lot to think about.

In truth, Colin was happy after being told that he was the vice-leader of Hell’s Kitchen. While he wasn’t the best at expressing his feelings, he really took pride in the work that he performed for Jayce. This was why he always went above and beyond his duties as a Guardian and a bodyguard for his Leader.

Being named the vice-leader was almost as if Jayce had recognized his hard work, and rewarded him accordingly. In high spirits, he accessed the Faction menu and began to type out a memorandum for all to gather in the central square.

“Dear Hell’s Kitchen members,

It is with great pride that I, your vice-leader, invite you all to the central square of Bastion in an hour’s time. Our fearless leader has tasked me, your vice-leader, to ensure that everyone has been notified of the meeting in advance.

Warm Regards,

Your vice-leader (Colin)”

Re-reading the email-like notice that he had just completed, Colin eventually nodded, happy with its contents. With a flick of his finger, he sent the notice out and dusted his hands.

Not long after, all across Bastion, people received a notification on their screens from Hell’s Kitchen. Upon opening up the notification, there were a few reactions, mostly a few laughs. Jackie was especially laughing her ass off, imagining her husband typing the message with his chest puffed out.

However on the inside she was happy for him, knowing how hard he worked for Jayce and the others. She turned to Macie and Heath who were sitting opposite her and drinking some warm tea. “Jayce is gathering our faction in an hour, did you want to come?”

Heath looked a little awkward, “We wouldn’t want to impose. After all, we’re not a part of his fac–”

However, before he could finish Macie interrupted, “Of course we’ll tag along. I was going to visit him at some point today anyway.” she said with a smile.

Hearing his wife insist on crashing the faction gathering, Heath shrugged dismissively. She wasn’t particularly sure why, but Macie seemed to be really interested in Jayce and his friends.

Before Cataclysm descended, she was really into fortune telling and tarot cards, to great success as well. Heath wasn’t really into that stuff, however he entertained it because he loved her. In the end, it turned out that a lot of her readings were quite accurate.

Macie was also a great judge of character, therefore he trusted her completely when it came to things like this. If she said that Jayce was trustworthy and worth following, then he believed her.

In another residence, Ben walked out of the bathroom wearing a towel, his hair still wet and slicked back. He froze for a moment, seeing the notification pop up in front of him. After reading the message, he let out a laugh, “Alright we get it, you’re the vice-leader! No need to say it three times.”

A giggle came from the bedroom, “I know right, I just hope I don’t have to listen to him brag for the next few months.” a female voice drifted into his ears.

“The bath is all yours” Ben said, throwing the towel towards the woman on the edge of the bed.

She deftly dodged the incoming wet towel, bumping into Ben on the way past. “Do you think an hour is long enough for another round?”

Ben froze for a moment, unsure if he was capable. He looked downstairs, as if having a mental conversation with the relevant department before turning to the woman with a smile. “You’re in luck Amber, I’ve been given the green light.”

With that, he grabbed Amber and flung her onto the bed with undisguised passion in his eyes.
