Chapter 83: Survivors
As Jayce and Zane ventured deeper into the eastern forest, the atmosphere grew increasingly tense. The woods, once serene and brimming with life, had transformed into a perilous realm filled with lurking danger. The duo encountered a diverse array of creatures: wolves, bears, wildebeests, and even sinister spiders, all exhibiting erratic behavior. These were the stragglers from the main beast tide, probably lured by the escapees of Qinling.
Jayce and Zane moved with caution, their senses on high alert, doing their best to avoid any head-on confrontations. Stealth and speed became their greatest allies as they skillfully picked off a few monsters without arousing suspicion. Although their battle prowess was formidable, they knew that unnecessary fights could deplete their resources and slow their progress.
As the sun dipped below the horizon, casting long shadows through the dense forest, the first day came to an end. Yet, despite their unwavering determination, they had yet to find any survivors. Instead, the forest was strewn with the lifeless bodies of those who had fled this far but couldn’t evade their relentless pursuers.
Recognizing the urgency of their mission, Jayce made a decision. With their enhanced, system-derived bodies, they could endure far longer than ordinary humans. Fatigue crept upon them at a much slower rate, enabling them to press forward through the night. Time was their enemy, and they couldn’t afford to rest when there were lives to save.
By the time the sun rose again the next morning, Jayce and Zane had seen a rise in the number of monsters. It was so many that they could no longer be called stragglers, rather their own branch. This meant that they were close to Qinling city.
Jayce and Zane ascended a steep hill that would give a good overview of the situation. As they reached the summit, their breaths caught in their throats. The sight that met their eyes was nothing short of horrifying. Spread out before them was Qinling City, once a bustling metropolis, now an apocalyptic nightmare. The streets, once filled with the hustle and bustle of city life, were now littered with lifeless bodies, and monsters roamed freely, feasting on the remains of the fallen.
The cityscape itself told a grim tale. Apartment buildings were now twisted and mangled, as if nature itself had turned against humanity. Abandoned cars, left behind in the chaos, lay scattered like discarded toys. The once vibrant city had been reduced to a macabre tableau of death and destruction.
Amid this nightmare landscape, grotesque monsters of all kinds wandered the streets. Enormous wolves, their eyes filled with malevolence, prowled in packs. Mutated bears, their fur matted with gore, scavenged for scraps. Monstrous spiders, their legs like daggers, spun webs between skeletal buildings. It was a surreal and terrifying scene, a testament to the brutal reality of the apocalypse.
However that was not all, he could hardly even count how many monsters there were in total. From their vantage point, it almost looked like the city was overrun by ants, painting a grim sight.
But amid the horror, a glimmer of hope emerged. Jayce and Zane spotted a group of teenagers running in their direction. Fear etched across their faces, but a fierce determination burned in their eyes. Jayce’s heart skipped a beat. After coming so far and seeing the state of the city, he had not expected to find any survivors, yet he had appeared just in time for these poor souls.
Jayce quickly surveyed the area, ensuring that none of the ravenous monsters had detected the teenagers. Their salvation seemed within reach. However, at that very moment, a colossal flying mantis spotted the trio of prey. With a powerful kick off the ground, it launched itself into the air, its insectoid wings unfurling with a chilling buzz. The hunt was on, and Jayce knew that he and Zane were their only hope of survival.
“Zane!” Jayce called out, jumping down the face of the cliff they were standing on. Without responding, Zane pulled out his bow and notched an arrow, waiting for an opportune moment to strike.
Jayce descended the cliff face with a frantic urgency, a desperate race against time. The teenagers caught sight of his rapid approach, their faces transforming from fear to hope. After hiding and surviving for a day and night, their dwindling optimism had finally pushed them to leave their hiding place, just as Jayce appeared on the scene.
The trio burst from their concealment, and their eyes met the approaching savior. Jayce abandoned any pretense of stealth, opting to sprint at full speed to bridge the gap between them. The distance dwindled rapidly: 50 meters, 40, 30, and then a mere 10.
A sudden whoosh cut through the air, followed by a metallic clang. Jayce’s gaze snapped to the side, catching the last glimpse of Zane’s arrow being deflected by the menacing scythe of the giant Mantis.
Shock and dread gripped Jayce’s heart, and he instinctively reached out toward the youths, his voice a desperate scream, “DUCK!”
However, the elation of imminent rescue had temporarily dulled their senses. The teenagers failed to react in time. The eerie sound of a sword cleaving through the air rang out, slicing through clothes and flesh in a single merciless sweep. Jayce’s outstretched hand was suddenly bathed in crimson as the trio before him was cleanly bisected.
In that suspended moment, time seemed to stretch and distort. Jayce’s gaze remained locked on the gruesome scene, the three young lives torn apart in front of him. Limbs and heads severed from torsos, their faces retained a flicker of hope, even in the throes of death.
Jayce’s visage turned blank, his mind a whirlpool of chaotic thoughts. He came to an abrupt halt, still extending his blood-soaked hand, as though expecting one of them to grasp it once more. But the cruel reality had severed their connection forever.
“Leader!!”
A shout entered Jayce’s ears, snapping him out of his reverie. However it was too late, the same scythe that had reaped the life of the three teenagers came crashing down from up above.
